One of my best friends is an over the moon Doctor Who fan - and I don't mean the kind that jumped on the bandwagon as soon as Hot Topic started selling stuff - he's got every episode (save the missing ones) all the way back to Hartnell. We had this discussion once of how The Doctor represents the British slate on what a hero is - scholarly, non-violent - sort of like an intergalactic professor - While Superman is a total American ideal of what makes a hero - big, muscular, fighter who defends those who can't possibly help themselves (at least the original Superman did this).
And thanks to the wonderful writing of Russell T Davis (still no sarcastic emocon) - The timelords came back didn't they? Timothy Dalton was one of them. I admit not following he show so I don't know if that's a dream sequence or what.
