Man of Steel (Pre-release)

I've read 2 reviews of the movie, and now, unfortunately, I know that
- "Superman" is never said
- Lois knows that Clark is Kal-El
- Metropolis is not referred to by name
- Krypton is destroyed (as if there was any doubt, but still)
I have never read a review with so many outright spoilers, minor though they may be, that I hadn't been warned about. Read reviews at your own risk, guys and gals.

I'm good with the second one.

Didn't want to be spoiled so I only skimmed through and read the end, but the author seems to think MOS is too serious, right ?
I read very few superman comics, but I watched all the superman and JLA cartoons when I was a kid, rewatched them several times after that, not that long ago.
From what I remember Superman is not really a funny guy, nor were the cartoons. Especially if earth is under attack. He is even pretty serious and authoritative at times in the cartoons. Not Batman level of course, and he does smile and laugh sometimes. All this to say I'm not expecting a comedy here, this is not Iron Man 3, so if it is an action packed movie, with a solid story with a tone a bit less darker than the TDK trilogy, I'll be a happy camper for sure.

Critic review of MOS. beware of major plot points. However, this author clearly doesn't know Superman or not a comic fan period.

After reading a bit more of the review you linked to, I have to say I disagree.

I only read the first three paragraphs as I want to try and stay somewhat spoiler-free - but, based on those three paragpraphs - spelling Snyder's first name wrong being the exception - the reviewer seems to get Superman more than the filmmakers. Everything I've seen of Man of Steel is dark, depressing and super-violent. The author seems to get that's not what makes Superman super.

But, again... I didn't read the entire article and the rest of it could live up to your assessment.

My experience...people have been writing reviews for this....WITHOUT watching it.

There will be 5 articles on the RPFPULSE this week...one every day to do with the movie.

Congrats if you remained spoiler free.....the 2nd movie is being fast tracked as we speak....I expect them to return to IL to film in Spring/Summer next year.

Trying to stay out of any spoilers until this Friday, damn I can't wait! Will be done with finals this week and MoS will be a nice little treat for finishing up my first MBA year!

I've been keeping track of MoS on RT and the critic review excerpts there, though not reading full reviews. Seems like most of the negative reviews are people who can't give a high grade for a fun summer popcorn movie. I'm not expecting this to be as deep as Nolan's TDK or as witty as IM3, so as long as Supes' character is adequately developed and there's plenty of building-dropping action (which sounds like there's MORE than plenty), I'll be very happy.

I've been tempted to watch the clip and 1. what I learned from the comics "Never **** Supes off" 2. at the end Henry channels somewhat I would hear from Tim Daly from Superman TAS, where he explained to Zod the Superpowers ("And it hurts… doesn't it?"). I was sceptical, but this scene with the wrecking and the talk, made me somewhat a little believer again… it's interesting and also interesting to read some reviews from fellow Supes fanboy. Thank you :thumbsup

New clip from Leno. Superman is a badass in this clip. AND HIS SUIT ACTUALLY LOOKS BLUE!!! So looking forward to this movie.

Um, sure seems the author of the review in question has seen the film. I'm a very big Superman film and have done my share of judging what I've actually seen...

That tells me nothing.

It's Superman... it's hard to remain truly spoiler-free. Krypton, Clark Kent, yadda yadda.

I did catch one small spoiler -and it's reinforces my belief this movie is not a Superman movie. I'm at a point now I know it's going to fairly well at the box office, but I just want it to bomb - and that's just based on the previews I've seen.

Here's the thing. Whether or not you say it's not superman, or you want it to bomb, I highly doubt it will. And yes, it's not the CR Superman and it's not the superman from most of the comics. Henry even said a lot of what they took from was new 52 supes. I am a big fanboy when it comes to Superman. I've liked some of what I've seen and other things I'm waiting to see it in context to give it a fair go. It's not going to be the Superman we all remember. That's obvious. To say it's not superman is an unfair assessment in my opinion. Now I may feel differently when I see it, but I am also the type that is more open to change, liked Nolan's films, and enjoy a fresh "more real feeling" comic book film. If they develop his character well enough then I'm good with it.

The review is actually pretty spot on. Nolan and Goyer pretty much gloss over anything in Superman's mythos that they feel isn't "real world" enough - or dare I say, Batmanny. Putting these two in charge of Superman was as bad as an idea as when they wanted to pull the same move with Burton. Just because someone pulled off Batman doesn't mean they can do the same with Supes - the characters are just too different.

Again, I say of what I've seen it doesn't look like Superman, it doesn't feel like Superman. Making it a Nolan produced film instills even more fear in me. My tune may change when I see it.

I'm not necessarily a fan of the Reeves/Donner Superman - it has it's place.

I can respect that. And I can also agree with you when you say it's hard to remain spoiler free since it is an origin story, certain things need and will be done in the film. Now hopefully this film meets needed expectations and spawns what is for sure to be a MOS 2, JLA, etc and those films can then start to venture more into the realm of originality. Originality in script, plot, villains (ones we haven't seen on film yet), and continue in this new universe giving us things we haven't seen.

Yea, this is a Superman we haven't seen. I like what I see and I'm glad MOS is different from past Superman versions, but eventually I want true originality in filming.

How do you expect or can say you want "true originality" with characters and ideas that are 75 years old?

Based on what I've seen in Nolan's Batfilms and what I've seen so far in MOS, I don't want a MOS2 or a JLA. I am waiting with bated breath for the Marvel sequels (and once upon a time I strongly preferred DC to Marvel - as it is now I stopped reading all DC shortly after the new 52 and there isn't much Marvel that grabs me).

The kids who go see Man of Steel now will be the adults defending it as the "Greatest Superman movie" in 10 years..... Just like the Kids who saw Superman the movie are the adults saying it's the best Superman movie.... ;)

Just got back from a screening. This is supes for a new generation but I think it will work with fans of old too. There are changes, but it flows pretty well IMO. It doesn't feel like a Nolan movie by any means. Its not "dark" or heavy handed, it walks a fine line and does a good balance of the "realism".

I loved it, will see it again at some point and can't wait for part 2.

Also those 4 spoilers up top are half wrong so I really don't think that person even paid attention to the movie.

Hahahahahaa. And yet people say this is the best superman.

Everything Wrong With 'Superman The Movie' In 5 Minutes (VIDEO)

God this was stupid - it doesn't say what's wrong with the movie - it's just one bad joke after another - or at least what this guy thinks passes as jokes.

Superman the movie - still and always will be the best -

I feel for kids today who have no idea how fun movies used to be before Hollywood ran out of all the bright colors in their crayon box.
