Making a Cosplay Captain America TFA work...

Sorry GJ I'm not exactly following you. I applied the dye very thick and didn't have to wipe off any excess since it absorbs quickly. In all it comes out to about 5 or 6 coats of dye, then the balm. And I lied in my other post, I couldn't put it down and worked on it some more tonight. I am super happy with it and would like to wear it around on a daily basis :behave :

GJ, If you are talking about the balm, it's a thin coat... Hope this helps. Shoot me a PM and I'll give you my number and I can try and help you further if you like.

The only minor issue so far is the weight of the 1911 and I had to remount and adjust so it would be tight to my leg instead of wanting to tilt out.

Were you able to get the flop under control?
Had the same problem with a UM-84 drop before I started using Blackhawk Industries. Where running the holster would work its way around to the front of my leg.

Yes I did, Instead of a piece of leather holding the muzzle end of the gun to the leg strap I utilized the holes that go through the holster for the original style leg tie and installed a small machine screw with a fender washer and it allows no movement of the holster even with the weight of the gun.

Man that looks great! And funny story about the dye, I did the exact same thing! :lol Only half a bottle though, except it was on my wife's cutting mat. So she got a new one !

Thanks Kevin, you and Sandman were huge a inspiration on this set up. I think it is a conspiracy that Fiebing is maybe making their bottles top heavy to make them easier to tip to make people buy more... Hmmmm

Thanks Steam, yours is coming along nicely as well. Did not even touch my uniform today, instead I had a hare brained idea to make a helmet out of my expired body armor. Figured, "What if Cap's helmet were real, what would it be made of?" I figured some early form of Kevlar. So that is what I worked on today...

This stuff is hard to cut. But in the end a cheap pair of scissors made in China did the trick. Just a bit more on this then I back on the uniform...

bulletproof helmet!

That's what I was thinking :love I recommend taking it off before testing that theory :lol. It is super light, one draw back is that when sanding it it leaves little frayed edges and I have not found a way to get rid of them. With poly fibers, you just touch a match to it and it will melt away, with this stuff, it won't burn!!

Need to have your final coat of resin thick enough so your finishing sanding doesn't cut into the fabric or the fabric wasn't saturated enough in the beginning.

Since it is molded to its final/perfect shape, assuming the problem is on the exterior, try a drop of super glue on the spot where the fibers are exposed and use plastic wrap if they don't lay down on there own.

I promise I was outside and wearing a mask when I came up with this.

1.) We need your kevlar molded helmet just a bit thinker and with either a suspension harness or foam pads.

2.) Get Chris to make us a copy of his now in the works titanium shield.

3.) Need a UD replica patterned suit but made out of kevlar and nomex cloth with the motorcycle pads replaced with ceramic armor and all the aluminum fittings replaced with titanium.

4.) The boots and pistol belt have already been solved.

All this equals a real Captain America.

Edit: Need to change the title of this thread to "Making Captain America Cosplay work for real"

I LIKE IT!!! I am going to attempt to do a padded system in this one with the leather around the edges. I may try the suspension set up first just for S's and G's. Wouldn't it be sweet to look inside and have it look like a modern GI helmet? Can't wait to get my shield!! :confused

My coworkers are totaly expecting that. I've been keeping them up to speed with the whole process and at first they kinda looking at me sideways, now they are just as excited as I am! Should I make the next belt for a Glock or a Beretta? That would bring it up to speed. I didn't even notice what hand gun he used in the "Avengers" or did he even use one? :confused

He didn't use one... I think he would stick with a 1911.. maybe a STI 2011. :)

Hey Chris, you hit the nail on the head! An STI would be sweet. It'd be traditional with modern upgrades, I too think that's what Cap would carry. And I'm following you Fly, that'd be an awesome set up!
