I got my 1936 IMCO 4700 Triplex historically accurate "Marion's Lighter" for
RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK in today with the 1936 patent-free cap.
Most believe the movie actually used an IMCO Triplex Super 6700 for the movie (updated version of the lighter from the 1950s that was still made in the 1980s making it easy for the film crew to substitute a similar looking lighter cheaply and easily), but it's pretty much impossible to tell from the film footage as you only see the top of it that looks the same on both lighters. I've got three 6700 lighters already. But as the movie was supposed to take place in 1936, if the character actually had one, this would have to be it.
The IMCO Triplex (later labeled the 4700) weren't patented until 1937, but were sold in Austria in 1936, but these are hard to come by. Presumably, they wouldn't have "Patent" on the end cap as it was granted yet. I finally actually found one that is missing any patent on the cap so I presume it's likely a 1936 model.
I've seen 4 other caps out there. Based on feedback data, it appears that:
-1937-1939 models have "Patent -
Made In Austria" on them
-Late 1939-1945 models have "Patent - Germany" on them (since Germany annexed Austria in WWII)
-Late 1945-1946 or possibly a bit later have "Patent - Made In The French Zone of Austria" (or something close to that) on them
-1946 and Newer just say "Patent - Austria" on them (without the 'made in' bit).
After a bit of light cleaning as well as changing out the ancient cotton packing and installing a new wick (completely missing) and and a new flint, here's the result (thumbnails; click for slideshow):
