Mad Max: Fury Road Costume Thread

There are a few SADF M83s on eBay right now, but I'm worried about the quality/smell. Also the airsoft replicas, while not as accurate, are more modular I understand?
If I go that route, I'll probably get a black one and paint it as someone else here as done. Don't know yet!

One thing to consider in terms of color is that the color grading on the finished film turned most of the blacks brownish. Check the B-roll footage if you want to see the natural colors. I'll add brown (Fuller's earth, spray paint) to my gear just so it matches a little better.

Hey all, new member here. I actually finally got around to registering after years of lurking specifically for this thread.

As a heads up regarding the Valsetz boots, I am 95% certain the photos from some sellers showing what appears to be a front half of the soles that are entirely shades of tan instead of the correct brown, black, and tan details on the bottom are either due to weird lighting on the part of the professional stock photos taken by Under Armour or that very early versions of the Timber colored ones did in fact have brown and tan front halve of soles briefly and most sellers didn't change the photos they were using. I've come to this conclusion because I wound up biting the bullet on ordering from one such seller (at this point it was the only source I could find that had any size that wasn't either US 8 or US 14) but this is actually how the soles looked:

I do believe it's more likely that the earlier soles on the Timber Valsetz boots were colored differently as the seller did include shots from the bottom, which depicted the part of the tread on the front half that's directly linked to the rear tread in the correct brown-and-black but the outer side of the front half was that brown-and-brown color, but I'm also pretty sure at this point that all remaining stocks of the boots do have the screen accurate soles.

Asdfgh! I'm a stupid, stupid, stupid head! I was tired and hyped on caffeine when I ordered the Combat master sheath, so I got an 8 inch Coyote Brown Sheath, and when I reread the thread today I find that a 6 inch ACU is closer to what I need. Gods I feel stupid.

Well i got a 5" in Coyote ^^ After weathering it i dont know the original color anyway :D

So I managed to get a M83 from the UK (i bet this trader was aware of the recently increased demand for M83 and charged double price ^^ )

After i'm Done with her. :D

I think i should put a Barbell weight in the left outer Pouch to counterweigh the Right side with all the Magazines ^^

i got the Replica version before so i took the time to make some comparisations.

Here's a Picture of the Cloth color. The Coyote is more brighter ^^

I ddint have a decent photo of the Replica before i weathererd it -> So here are my both weathered Vests in comparisations (without the extra pouches)

M83vsMülltec.jpg
The M83 is up the Replica is at the bottom
(NOTE: I weathered both vests the same way. The weathering comes of when its used.
I worn the replica vest on severl Post-apok Larps recently http://tinyurl.com/qcbg6fb for example )

I didnt managed to get a L1A1 cleaningset box so far so i improvised something ^^

A Tin Box for Pipe Tabak may not have the exact size in lenght -> but the Style in shape comes close.
Just ripped off the Brand Stickers, painted it olive and weathered it a bit.

It's not screen accurate but it is better than leaving the pouch empty. ^^

Yeah, coyote is going to look awfully similar to the ACU after weathering and dusting, but a 8" is going to be waaay too big. Also, neat job on the vests, can see very little difference between them. And the Tobacco tin idea is a good one, I'll be on the lookout in second hand shops for something that'll fit.

well, you have to cut away the straps on the top of the sheet anyway.

There is a possibility but you wont like what I say. :D

Pulling the plastis-sheet out, open the threads on the up and resew them a little bit lower....

or jsut put it on ebay and buy a new one :D

So just finished My stitching and weathering my jacket, took a couple days especially with stitching the leather. Also thanks to Nuclear Snail studios and there awesome video on how to weather leather, I'm very satisfied with the outcome of my South beach leather jacket. Here's some pic's let me know what you guys think.

All dirt no paint, took about 3 hours and a lot of acetone. Also I would suggest using a wire brush over sand paper for details, makes it a little easier.

That looks great man, how'd you seal the dirt onto the leather so well, or is it just stuck on from the weathering?
I'd love to use whatever methods you used on some waxed jeans and see if the results look similar, because real leather pants are sort of expensive, ha.

Killer job on the weathering. Can you give us some tips on how you approached doing the stitching? Did you actually cut the leather on the left shoulder for the slices made by the Mohawk Biker?

Hey Tulu thanks! To seal the dirt in you rub acetone on the leather and scrape with either sand paper of wire brush, and then take some tinted dirt, I was able to find some at a baseball field. place dirt on a fine grit concrete surface (basically any sidewalk) and rub the **** out of your jacket in the dirt. I would repeat this process at least 3 times to achieve that desert dystopian look. Also found some leather fat which you can buy online or any place that sells leather products rub in with more dirt to seal that stuff. There is a really good video I posted earlier on this same page done by nuclear snail studios that gives you a great tutorial of all this.

Thanks Rockatansky! Honestly I looked at some close ups of his jacket and the Mohawk bicker slashes aren't really that apparent in the fury road jacket, I made very thin incisions with a stencil knife and didn't even go through the entire leather, I was kinda afraid of the jacket falling apart on me lol. And as for the stitching my thumbs and fingers are killing me! :sick I went the tough and gritty look by hand with a very thick sewing needle and pliers. Didn't want to do it by machine because then you'll somewhat end up with a look that's to perfect and from the looks of Max's Jacket in fury road there is nothing perfect about it. The Collar was probably the hardest cause it contains 2 layers of leather so I would suggest a very thick and strong thimble. hope this helps.

So I finally attached my Paladin on my jacket last night and I still have to do some weathering to that, probably just going to use paint for that, unless anyone has any suggestions?
And still need to add some other things to the vest but some progress is being made.... Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make or acquire a prop 40mm grenade? And yes that is an Altoid tin spray painted black lol.

For the record, a leather awl is your friend here. It wasnt clear if you used one, so I apologise if Im sounding like a wiseass. An awl is a useful costuming tool and I almost guarantee that you can borrow one from anyone interested in sewing. They cost at most a couple of bucks.

:cry:cry:sick Just googled Leather AWL, and sadly I did not use one, or know what it was (I'm a leather NEWB)... And no apology necessary, I just wish I knew what the awl was before putting my hands through that torture lol. Either way that's what this forum is for, to learn... even from or brutal pain staking mistakes.

MadBlake:

Just get a dummy exercise 40mm Grenade. The one with the Blue tipp recruits get to learn the loading mechanism without blowing themselves up. ^^
can be often found as "deco" - article

I just spraypainted the Blue Tip golden ^^

Thanks Man I actually was doing some research online after your advice and came across this http://gunandsurplus.com/Inert-Ordnance-Rounds/Mk-19-40mm-Dummy-Grenade-INERT I never thought to look for a MK-19 linked 40mm but it looks just like the one he has on his SADF assault vest, It would explain those dark thicker areas around the lower casing. Also this is cheaper than any of the dummy ones or airsoft reproduction. Im guessing cause it has no other purpose than that of a paper weight lol.

Thank you, MadBlake. I was wondering how hard it was to put that many stiches in the leather. What kind of "lace" did use for the stitches?
