Luke's Lightsaber Mando series finale.

My thought for why they may have bought/brought a fan-community saber is that they were keeping the Luke appearance/reveal a secret and the less people in the know the better the secret is kept. It’s possible making the prop would have involved more people in the mix than a down-low purchase or loaning a prop.
These prop teams are professionals and have to sign NDAs. If word leaks it’s their job. I’d trust them over a fan any day.

Also consider, these prop teams may not be SW fans. It’s hard for us to think that, but to them it could be just a job.

The only way I see your scenario working is if the Production Designer decided just to hop on EBay and snag whatever to keep it quiet— but we’re still looking at stunts being made and possibly even duping a fan build.

It seems like even Favreu is surprised the news didn’t leak. In this case, everyone just did their job.

Episode III will have to wait; Favreau is going to shoot the "Book of the Mandalorian" before tackling # III:)

You be surprised how many non Star Wars fans work for ILM lol

So while it was clear that they would PRODUCE Boba Fett before Season 3 of The Mandalorian, we don't know if Season 3 will also be RELEASED after Fett, correct? Is that just the assumption all are making?

I think it’s becAuse of these new screens they are using.. I know Kenobi is utilizing the same 360 screen as we have seen on mando

Watch the interview clip with Favreau - that's what he said - Book of Boba Fett will come out first, then shortly after that will be Season 3 of The Mandalorian.

I was thinking the same thing. Disney has plenty of money for this kind of stuff, why would they bother purchasing something pre-made instead of using the prop department they have hired already? Well said.
I think it's very much in the realm of possibility that Feloni brought in a replica from his personal collection to use as a belt-hanger, but I'm sure the stunts were custom made.

But having said that, the hero was probably also custom made.

No, apparently S3 of Mandalorian will be slightly delayed by production of The Book of Boba Fett:

That’s why I said consecutively, not simultaneously. One after the other. My guess is given the amount of share assets, a lot of things in preproduction will be combined, but they will shot one then the other.

They are well ahead on all these things than they let on to be.

Dur... you sure did. Brain fart on my part.

And you're right - Favreau said they're in pre-production now on S3 of Mandalorian, but they way he phrased it... does that imply that they're already in production on BoBF I wonder?

Fett is in production now. I would imagine that Mando 3 is at the very least roughly plotted given that Favreu is writing both shows, at least enough that the detailed pre-vis needed for the Stagecraft/Volume visuals is underway. They'd need to be that far along so that once Fett is done shooting they can roll right into M3 to hit the release schedule.

I know Acolyte just finished staffing a writer's room. The Obi-Wan show is up to something-- I know production people are working, but I also have heard the show-runner has bailed out, so it's a bit of a mystery. Asohka is being fully written/run by Filoni, so it's progress greatly depenmds on how involved he is on Fett/M3. Rangers is a Favreu joint, so it's definitely a ways out given he's got two seasons of shows ahead of it in-progress.

Back on topic though-- assume that any show using the Stagecraft/Volume method (thus far I think the Andor show is the only one that isn't) is going to have a lot of assets-- props, graphics, partial sets, made well ahead of schedule given how so much has to be pre-vized and even pre-shot/rendered for the backgrounds to be ready for shooting. There are likely props being built NOW for shows that won't shoot well into next year.

Kind of how by the time we saw the Mando S1 Darksaber in the final episode and in Gallery, the team had already rerworked it for Season 2. So similarly, even though we are just now breaking down the Darksaber, hearing Esposito say he broke a few, and seeing a stunt stand in that is a painted over Ahsoka hilt-- right now this second I would bet serious money that a new prop is underway for the Darksaber in S3.

This is just my assumptions based on having worked in TV, and knowing how long things can take. To that-- I assume the hunt for Luke's lightsaber for Mando was started in the fall of last year.

the more and more i think about this seth, the more i think it was scratch made... but if these were scratch made, why have the Rylo on the belt? someone in production personal collection they wanted on screen? there is the hero on the table as well.. is that the Rylo or a scratch made one?

the search continues

I don't think the Rylo was there at all. Pretty sure everything was scratch made at this point, it just doesn't make much sense for them to have a fan made hilt given the givens of the Ashoka sabers, that Luke DEFINITELY wasn't a late addition and that they haven't not fabricated new hilts since TPM. At least to me. I may be wrong but I find it much easier to believe they simply used the same reference as the Rylo for theirs than that they actually used it all things considered.

I hope we get solid answers soon either way.

Where’d you hear that? Also, who was running that show agin?
I work in TV/film. I have a little inside info-- not anything from the productions themselves, just what is known inside Hollywood in terms of what is in production when and sometimes who is running shows.

Is that table shot decent enough to learn anything from? I feel like either a Rylo was used as reference because somebody had one, or more likely, they looked to the Elstree for their reference and landed in the same area that Rylo did. It's like the Skinnyflex being based on the Ranch saber instead of any images of an ESB Graflex.

Like I said above, it's often standard for productions to build things from scratch based upon the needs of whatever the upcoming needs will be. For example, the tech was already changing between TFA and TLJ with FX sabers so it made sense they build Luke a new one and not re-use what was made.

Clearly they learned lessons on Mando 1 that lead them to re-work the Darksaber for S2. When they built it for season 1, they didn't have dueling in mind. The could have plans for S3, and lessons learned from S2 that will lead to a new design next time around.

With the archives we assume with SW that they can just pull stuff off shelves for use-- and sometimes they do. But it's far more common in Hollywood to build from, scratch based on the needs that are upcoming on a particular production.

You mentioned TLJ... Do we know if they made/used an FX version of Luke's green saber at all for TLJ? All I am aware of that we saw was the TFA table shot and the TLJ resin Hero. I'm thinking that they never even made a Luke FX for the ST.
