Lucas to retire?

Respect the man and his vision when he first started. When you have something that still has a rapid fan base after all this time that should be an indicator that you came up with something special.

I can respect the fact that he went back and changed the OT a little bit but I HATE the fact that he won't give us the movie that we all loved the first time we saw it. If you want to complete your original vision then great, show it to us but deny us the movie that was our original experience that made us go "WOW!' the first time we saw it.

I don't know the man personally and I've never made a major box office movie but maybe, and I'm just going out on a limb here, but maybe no major distributor wanted to pick up Redtails based on GL's recent scripts due to his past work. (The only man in Hollywood that can get away with crappy movie after crappy movie is Uwe Bolle! LOL)

When you're the boss who's rumored to not like people criticizing his work, no one is going to give you an honest opinion when you are signing their paycheck. "Yes Men" are going to tell him what a great idea it is and what a great script it is.

GL started out strong but something happened and he lost his mojo. He just can't loosen his grip on his baby.

The more you tighten your grip, the more fans will slip through your fingers :)

It's kinda like the guy who got everything he wanted and made no compromises. Not a very healthy creative environment so we got the prequels.

The poster who mentioned he blames the fans for simply pointing out how bad the prequals are hit the nail on the head.

He sounds like a sore loser.

Hey George, suck it up, think about it, and go make another cool masterpiece. I know you can do it.

I don't know if this has been said, but seriously, his reason is like that of an 8 year old. I couldn't belive tha the used the general concensus from SW fans (regarding his constant medling with the origional films) as fuel to claim he's ready for retirement.

I saw somewhere that he invested 100 million dollars of his own money into the new Red Tails movie...I doubt he'll suffer in retirement very much.

Oh, the only disappointment may be that there may not be a chance to really give Indy one final (appropriate) send off.

The man created (with the help of others) one on the greatest film franchises of all time. He'll always have that. But since "Return of the Jedi", George began the habit of surrounding himself with nothing but "yes" men. All the wonderful elements that were so prevalent in the first two films are sorely lacking from the third. And it shows.

Thus began the rule of "King George". The sole ruler and decision maker of all things Star Wars. What followed was nothing more substantial than a Saturday morning toy commercial. This and his constant tweaking of the original trilogy, proved he had little respect for film history, even his own.

Thank you Mr. Lucas for Star Wars. But I won't shed a tear for the end of your blockbuster film making. In my opinion, you lost that ability sometime 1983.

But if think about it. Without the input of Gary Kurtz and others, did he really have the skill at all to begin with?

I really appreciate threads like this as they remind who here are completely off their rockers.

Entitled to see the original, original trilogy, preserved at the highest possible resolution.. yea I guess I have a complex.

You know..it's kind of a slap in the face to the millions of fans worldwide..all these changes he makes. We fell in love with something that "wasn't his true vision". If your career and life are defined by a universe and trilogy you created..WHY would you mess with it?!

It's like being in love with a girl for 20 years then finding out she wasn't really the person she claimed to be. Not only do you now have to try to accept this person acting differently..you have to come to terms with the reality of the past 20 years of being deceived. I dunno..we LOVE something..and then are told years later we love something that isn't correct.

I guess our love is for a fluke...a result of the circumstances that created 2.75 great movies, but THAT "fluke" should be preserved as THE films in history and not messed with. If George wanted to do a reboot he should have, but not messed up our original films and replaced them with incomplete changes and stupid cartoon jokes. They are OUR films..WE financed them by loving them and paying to see them again and again. He should at least have the appreciation to his fans to preserve what they love and SELL them to us. I have soo much more love and respect for the movies as they were. Sure..clean up some effects, but leave the movie that got him recognized as it is!! What would it take to dedicate a crew to a nice restoration and transfer of the original films, as they were. He'll make money selling them to cover his costs. Instead he is being selfish and stubborn because we don't break into applause hearing Jar Jar yelling "Weesa free!!" in ROTJ.

When these changes are constantly being made the franchise loses it's integrity..even the old VHS versions..and THAT is what he's taking away from us.

Another thing that comes to mind with regards to the OT and Lucas is that most of the money that he makes is likely from the general audience, not the die hard fans. Sure the collectors and die hard fans are the ones who buy the toys, along with the next generation of kids, but typically speaking the ones who purchase the movies over and over is the general public.

I didn't buy the Bluray versions because I already own several versions of the films. I figure that until the OT is released in a properly restored format, I have no reason to buy them again. That's why I was so disappointed that when the Bluray came out so many fans who said they weren't going to get the box set ended up purchasing them anyway. Sadly the boycott that was supposed to send a message to George that the fans were sick of his meddling ended up again breaking all kinds of sales records for the bluray format.

I think it comes down to voting with our wallets, not bitching on web forums. If Lucas sees that we keep buying his products, despite all of the complaints, then why would he stop making them? Sadly the general audience will never know the difference, or maybe we should just stop caring so much! haahahaha

I wish I could. But then again, perhaps the lesson in all of this is to stop worrying about what an eccentric billionare does with his movies and get to work writing my own masterpiece!

Your last sentence nails it.

I'm not trying to change George Lucas' mind, although I certainly have my opinions about his choices (obviously). All I'm doing at this point is making individual consumer decisions about what I do and don't want to buy, based on my own appreciation of what's come out and on recent Lucas-franchise products. Some stuff I still buy. I might sign up for The Old Republic MMO, although I'm in no rush. I might pick up this or that comic book or novel because it sounds interesting. I won't buy the blu-rays because (A) I don't have a blu-ray player, and (B) even if I did, it's not the version I want, so...why spend my money? I'm not trying to "send a message." No message will get through anyway. Lucas' statements here make that clear.

He'd either ignore what "the fans" demanded because they were ungrateful peons trying to force him to change, or he'd ignore them because he couldn't hear their cries over the sound of millions of cash-registers cha-chinging as people buy his products. Either way, there's no point in "sending a message." Better to just make choices based on personal preferences and leave it at that. If it changes his mind, superduper. If not, well, at least you're not out however many bucks it costs for the latest Star Wars product.

YES. This.

It's not the general audience going out and seeing these things, again and again and buying everything just for completion. They're moving on to Avatar or the next big whatever.

It's just us fans. It's the same thing in comics. "I hate what they're doing with Spider-man" or whatever "but I'm just going to keep buying it to support the character. Maybe it'll get better?"

We've got the original movies. They're right there on my shelf. They're not going anywhere.

Someday, if I want to see them slightly clearer or whatever, I'm sure someone will put out a print when they realize they can squeeze a few more bucks out of it, but these ones I've got are the ones I watched as a kid, or close to, when I fell in love with them. That's all I need.

Question to all of you.

How do you think George retiring will effect the future of Star Wars projects? Such as Clone Wars series, the live action show, etc.

I'm sure he'll still be calling all the shots. This retirement is probably some legal mumbo-jumbo.

Yeah, uh...Lucas is extremely prone to changing his mind. Remember?

"It's his retirement and he can do whatever he wants with it!"

He didn't change his mind. He always intended to announce his retirement and then return triumphantly with a new holiday special.

Actually, I'd say it'll be the retirement announcement itself that keeps going through changes throughout the years. I'm holding off on it until they release the 16K virtual light smellovision version.
