Man that is awesome, awesome, awesome ...

I think I´ll have to reread the thread to get to some technical info.

One thing thoug, the airbubbles in the sticker are a shame, have you tried using a little water/dish washing stuff-mix under the sticker ? it lets you reposition the sticker, and wipe out those bubbles easily. When the dishwashing-solution dries away, it will look perfect. Well, at least as perfect as it can be on such a perfect prop ;)

The artwork on the prop is a bit of a hodgepodge of materials- The emblem is actually printer paper lightly pasted onto the cab- I will likely CAREFULLY remove these and store them within the cabinet or frame them- I would like vectorized/color matching versions on the cab- Even without the bubbles they look shoddy- As a rule, I do not alter props but I think here I can capture a more realistic look with replacement art while making it easy to restore the cab to it's original condition (this is not the actual movie cab but the one from the documentary)-

Just an update and contribution from one of our newer members- VegasVader sent me an Adobe Illustrator (i.e. vectorized) Star League emblem- Really stunning and spot on- I am posting a 600x600 jpeg (the upload limits of my hosting service) but will try to add the .ai file for download on the site soon- This will of course be essentially inifinitely scalable-I've scaled it up and very pretty indeed-

Thank you VegasVader and a heartfelt welcome to the board and the thread-

Doc

Thanks. I couldn't seem to post before. I've been a fan of the game and the film for a long time. We have Alex Rogans flightsuit in the Planet Hollywood here in Vegas, and everytime I pass the thing I think about that game again.

Hope I didn't step on anyone's toes with this file. Just want to see a bunch of cool arcade cabs out there. Now that you posted the dimensions with those great pics, I'll be building at least one.

No you didn't as far as I know. I've been so busy with work that I haven't had time to learn Illustrator, so you've already done myself (and I imagine a lot of others) a big favor. Thanks.

Doc, I need your opinion:

On the side art, How much black would you want exposed around the edges of the R/B stripes? Also, would you want the "Starfighter" title to be attached to that piece, or should it perhaps be just line art, so people could cut it out and use it as a painting stencil? Or perhaps both? One attached to the stripes, and one a seperate element?

Grabbed some photos-

Pssst, Doc, Still need a square (photographer standing square to the cab) front 'marquee' shot. ;)

Thanks.

If you guys are interested, once I've blueprinted the plans for the cab, I can do the vinyl for ALL of them, including the cutout letters for the marquee (I've got a 32" vinyl cutter in the garage and the laser) so it makes it kinda easy to do em here.)

It's a hobby, so I would most likely do them super reasonable. I can't do printed vinyl, but I can do the colors here (Black/White/Red/Blue/Grey) Including a kit for all the labels.

Comments/questions/suggestions?

Damien...

Any updates? Been almost a month. :)

I've about finished a vector image of the marquee, based on Doc's measurements.

It's a bit wider to allow for trimming, and slightly taller as well, but the letters and white top/bottom borders are in the same places, based on the original photo I used as a template in Illustrator.

Russ

Uploaded the Starfighter vector marquee image to the arcade artwork site located
Here.

Image is 5 7/8"H x 32"W

The actual image is slightly wider and taller to allow a cabinet builder some leeway in their measuring. Lord knows I never, ever make mistakes when building things. :lol

Enjoy.

Russ

Just a little throw-in for anyone working on the cabinet. Did a few DVD captures, and there seems to be a pretty good slope to the Marquee. Here's a shot of it.

Vegas Vader

:D

Look at the snapshot of the marquee I did above. :)

The generic shape is like a flattened house. Sort of.

I directly based my marquee on photos of Doc's cabinet, which as has been mentioned before was used in the intro to the DVD. You get to see shaggy, I mean, Lance standing right beside it. :D

On page 2 of this thread, about halfway down Doc has some pictures of the cabinet that show the drastic angle the top is.

Wait a sec... did you mean the sides, or the front of the marquee?
That picture you supplied almost makes it look like the bottom of the marquee is pushed in about 2" further than the top is.

Thanks for the input.

Russ

Cool- Will post update pics soon- Finished a meteor gun level and darn near finished with a scout ship chase level- Next the command level- Will hopefully have a complete level demo in the next few weeks- Thinking about 7 levels with a 20-30 minute full playthrough time- Will be hitting sound next- Anyone out there do a passable Preston or good at sound slicing video?

No, specifically the MARQUEE. It IS pushed back like 2 inches. It is different from the console they built for the DVD. That's what I was pointing out, that anyone building one, will want to make sure they put the right slant to the marquee...

Vegas Vader...

Ah, okay. I imagine that was done so that the marquee wouldn't reflect light.
I've had to do something similar when attempting to take photos of game marquees in the past. Usually you need to stand off center or hold the camera up or down so you're not square to the flat marquee which keeps the flash from giving you a hot spot in the center.

With the exception of a few cabinets (Dedicated Robocop and Dragon's Lair/Space Ace plus one or two others) nearly every cabinet has the marquee flat, and not angled. It's just more practical than trying to engineer an oddball angle like that. :)

Not to mention, I'm wondering how you get the darn thing IN there. Of course, the cabinet WAS hollow, so it's possible that it was installed from the backside.

Darn filmmakers causing trouble for the fans again. ;)

Russ

I may contact the fellow I acquired the cab from on that one (the marquee angle)- I don't remember it being like that in the beginning but (embarrassed), I mainly have screen caps of the game footage and not the machine so much-

As promised, more pics of the game in the works-

The meteor level-

The scout ship pursuit through space- Note the right upper radar is 8 lines of code or so just for beta-testing (not to be incorporated)-

Attack from the aft:
[image]http://www.fotoheap.com/image.php?on=207&an=1940&in=25648&t=i[/image]
Attack from the fore:

This should look familiar-
[image]http://www.fotoheap.com/image.php?on=207&an=1940&in=25639&t=i[/image]

Anyway, still coming along nicely- Working on the command ship level and final fly-by (as you can likely tell by the Cammand ship explosion algorhithm)- Still need to integrate the new subroutines (though object sets and variables are in place)-

The next great frontier is sound- Anyone good at Robert Preston or sound dissection?

Doc

I do have some- The dialogue I have is what was written specifically for the Atari proto- It is pretty limited- It's just the lines boxed in red at the top-

[image]http://www.roguesynapse.com/games/last_starfighter/dialogsheet.jpg[/image]

Missing a few-

"Enemy fighters detected sector . . ."
"Koh-Dan command ship dead ahead"
"Bad luck starfighter, insert another quarter please"

and a few others for between level transitions and gauges (things like "Hull critical" and "Laser energy depleted", etc)- Also just need to get clean loops for the weapons and explosions, etc.

isnt there a place to download a working demo???

sorry just really want to see this thing in action.

this is just the greatest project ever.

always wanted to play that game, and this was one of my favorite movies (non SW) from my child hood, up there with the dark crystal, and the goonies. and of coarse BTTF.

thanks in advance, and keep up the good work.

man too bad you couldnt get an arcade company to buy this and make them for real, but alas the arcade days are pretty much over. :(

i just think people would soil there drawers if they walked out of a convenient store and saw this thing sitting there.

maybe make like a blinding light that shines down on them complete with powerful fan to blow their hair and debris when they beat it. LOL...

that would rule. B)

Thanks man- Hope folks will be able to build their own working cabinet when it's done-

The software is freeware and is downloadable at www.roguesynapse.com.

The current demo has false boot screens, the intro, the light target level, the scout ship over the asteroid level, and the fighter attack- The demo repeats the fighter attack level from there- There are between level transitions and all weapons are working as well as player death- There is no sound (except for the intro dialog)- The next demo will hopefully be ready in the next few weeks and will hopefully have the entire working game (all levels playable) and perhaps a limited attract mode shell- Still need sound- Also need to tweak the controls (the reticle is clunky to say the least)-

Agree it would be fun to sneak a working cab out somewhere and see the reactions- May slip in a random occassional subroutine in attract mode that does the weird noise and flashing that called Centauri-

Yeah, but then, you'd have to hire some guy to stand next to the machine and shake it when it does the subroutine...

Laugh...
