Last Starfighter video game project - COMPLETED

Just an update- I got some of the voice track for the game. This was a 35mm mag track sent from the studio to Atari for their prototype. Had to find a professional ad agency here to transfer the format. The track includes the intro, "Prepare for target light practice", "Record Breaker Record Breaker", and "A game . . . It was also a test." CLEAN SOLITARY VOICE TRACK. It does not have "Insert another quarter please", "Ko-dan fighters sector 12", etc.

Anyone know/have any voice talent for Robert Preston?

The cabinet should be professionally shipped within the next couple of weeks. Pics to follow.

The game is progressing. I have gone back to DarkBasic (not DB Pro). I can work with that a lot easier and should be able to get the semicircular analog gauges with 50-100 sprites.

Progressing-

Sounds great doc! Nice score on the Sound track as well! It's too bad that the original prototype software is lost. When I contacted those "in the know" at Atari they all came to the same conclusion that the software was stored on a magnetic tape media (High tech stuff back in 1984!) and it would be nearly impossible to hook up the tape "deck" to a modern PC. That is, IF they could even find the media the software was stored on at the time. When a company get's bought/sold a lot of things (besides loyal employees) get thrown away.

Too bad really.

I do some voice work and would be interested in taking a crack at this. Been a Robert Preston fan forever.

E-mail me some copy you'd like done and I'll work on a couple of scratch tracks and see if we can get it in the ball park.

My commercial voice over demo is on my acting website at www.StevenKirk.com.

Sounds like fun!

Just keeping the thread alive- The game is ACTUALLY REALLY being crated and shipped(courtesy of Fred Barton and David Fein)- Will hopefully have by the month end along with Maria. The analog gauge idea worked- subroutine draws 90 bitmaps in arc form (0-90 degrees)- Now tweaking the graphic to fit in each of the display windows and including the small rectangular fill at the outer edge. Mock ups look good and fast!!!- Will start working on the starfield next and reworking the text scroll (realizing I had included too much text helped to slow it down to movie speed). Will get 3d Studio Max this week hopefully (Thank you eBay!). Dave Fein is working on some game sounds (in addition to his support in getting the cabinet to me for this project and encouraging me to get the cab images out so interested folks might build their own- he may actually be able to find the blueprints!!!!).

Rogue Synapse (www.roguesynapse.com) should be getting a major overhaul soon after the cabinet arrives and I get some scans and photos. Will also have any HAL9000 stuff I had worked on as well as "The Bishop of Battle" cab stuff. Will give everyone a heads up as always.

Still interested in 3D modellers for the Ko-Dan fighters/scout ships/command ship/rockets/light targets/asteroid/gunstar redo.

Things are actually back in full swing again-

Doc

Thats great, glad thigs are going back n track here, cant wait to ge the cab info so I can start building one.

I have already started working out the buttons and stuff needed for the game and am working in an inexpensive way to get the controllers working right.

Ill post all my info when I have it.

eaviii. who do you have working on the cabinet marquee and side art, and bezel pics?

That's great Doc, thanks for the update. I'd be interested in plans of the cabinet as well as any printable control panel graphics if you come across something like that.

Could always take them to Kinkos or some professional place and have them nicely printed off on large format glossy paper.

Have you decided on a control scheme yet? I'm going to assume you'll be going the "screen used" route with two joysticks, as opposed to the Atari Prototype route where they used the Star Wars analog yoke.

Cheers!

Cool- I'm not sure what you're asking on the art- I was going to take hires photos and try to get some scans for posting but hadn't planned on image cleanup as yet. If someone is interested in getting the art to printable size and resolution, that would be cool. For the buildups I have been working on, I have had things go through a professional printer (Creative Type)- The Space Paranoids sideart was $40 per side printed on double backed adhesive 3M stuff. The marquees run about $30 and the CPO (only done for Space Paranoids thus far) was $15. I don't know if their outfit is Texas only or not, but their work is stunning. I will be posting some pics of the Space Paranoids cabinet soon with the sideart on, control panel on, and marquee lit. They printed all the artwork.

In terms of the gameplay, I had figured I would stick with the movie controls- dual joystick, laterally mounted fire button on the left controller, 3 toggle switches on the right of the cabinet to control weapon selection (lasers, particle beam, proton bolts). I was hoping to stick to the game as featured in the movie and not the planned Atari proto. I was not planning on including death blossom, chase Zur's escape pod, etc. Maybe as a game setting for deluxe mode or something. Will include some type of attract mode and probably a false ROM check to cover image and model loading.
Ultimately, like Space Paranoids, I would like it to look and act like an arcade machine with gameplay that matches that seen in the film.

Doc

That sounds great eaviii, if theres anythign I can do to help with the sideart, marquee por bezel art creation let me know, ill post pics of the game controls im working on as soon as I can get them all together ( still finish up some projects here to pay the bills).

THE CABINET HAS ARRIVED AT MY HOME- I WILL UNCRATE IT TONIGHT AND SHOULD HAVE PHOTOS UP BY MONDAY-

Yes, I was asking about images we could have printed out (professionally, Kinkos or some such place...) so we could make our own cabinets. Since the real deal, even emulated, is no longer an option, this would hopefully be the next best thing.

Those "Special Edition" features would be pretty sweet. Think of it like a "rom revision" of the Starfighter Training Simulator.

This too is a great suggestion in my book! What I'd use if possible, is a simple animation like you see in Midway games from the late '80s, early '90s, where it shows a graphic of the boardset, and as each "rom" is checked it "lights up" until all "roms" have been verified as "good."

I wouldn't hope for anything less. Thanks for all the hard work!

Man I cant wait too see this cabinet, i bet you are just drooling over it right now. Heck we dont blame you

Believe it or not- I have been working overtime and have simply not photo'd it yet. I will grab some photosand have them up here soon. I will definitely need some direction on what is helpful and what is not. I still have not gotten the blueprints yet from Dave. The website does have the older demo for download (screenshots). Gawker revamped the whole site and moved to a different server. DOWNLOADS ARE MUCH FASTER NOW.

Miniaturizer Ray sent an amazing Gunstar model. Reworking the intro a bit and have been trying to get better with lighting.
