Hmm...I'm perfectly cool with pretty much everything you just said.

Bravo, Sir!

As I pointed out, my post was not directed entirely at you. I realize it looks like I was giving 'you' both barrels... you were just caught in my stream of consciousness. As for defending the JY. I've fought just as hard against the administration on certain changes as I have for the ones I believe in. Having invested 15 years on this forum, I am indeed passionate about it's policies. However, I do wish others were less apathetic. It would lighten the load. :p

That said, I appreciate your take on things.

??
Who said anything about profit? This was a post just about fun and community. Garage sales can be fun. That was the only thing I was suggesting.
Rylo, you are the ideal seller in the junkyard. I think we all agree that you are a well respected prop maker/ businessman. Your reputation is above reproach and you always make valid, well thought out, persuasive threads and posts. You are right. $4 is not much. It is not unreasonable. You are right, entitlement mentality is not what we should strive for.

Sometimes I am baffled on where you find the energy to defend so many of these junkyard topics so ardently…
You are like the junkyard paladin.

With all the subtle changes going on here I didnt even notice the new and improved JY. What I did notice was haw easy it was to browse visually. Users can now just flip through pages of items and when something catches your eye, bingo!

One suggestion: Most retail web sites have an option of how many results get returned, "show all". It looks like the JY returns 20(?) items per page. Not a biggie but a larger return option would be cool. The new layout is far superior to the old IMHO.

Orrrr, someone could simply decide (at any time) that they have over 4 dollars worth of merchandise and buy a membership for the month and sell whatever they have in their own personal garage sale. As I've said in numerous threads; If someone wants to sell in the JY but they can't cost justify 1$ a week in their profit margins, we're all really better off not having their crap clog the area.

Agree absolutely

I am a very new member here, I would like to purchase a premium membership, but need clarification on two points.

1) As a premium new member I can post only to the JY. If I made several of the same items would I have to post one at a time, then when one sold make another post for the same item?

2) Offering services/commision work. Is that available to new premium members?

May I ask why new members are restricted? If it's because you want to ensure they aren't scammers/fraudsters/sock puppets, whatever. Would there be a way to require some kind of verification, say the individuals company website. Maybe a portfolio of completed items or proof they have the equipment/ know how? Thank you for your time.

So whats the difference between a new member and a full access member?

Is it me, or has the FS etc prefix been removed from the New Posts list it generates :confused ?

It's a very handy thing to see while quickly scanning the New Posts list, as it immediately differentiates between a classified and a normal thread.

As it is now, one has to see this by shifting one's look to the right, to the column that states which forum a thread is posted in.

Slows down the scanning of new posts substantially :(

Unless I'm going bananas, I'm pretty sure it was there before :lol

(It is there for the old JY threads though)

I agree with that.

I posted a bunch of stuff today and I liked the setup, it went really smoothly and I love being able to upload photos directly and not jump through the photobucket hoops I normally have to. The one suggestion I would have is to make the price stand out more on the page. It's the same size as the rest of the text, could be a little more bold or a bit larger.

In theory, yes. In practice, no. You wouldn't actually have to create a new thread each time. You simply wouldn't mark the item as sold, so it would continue to show as being for sale. Now it may seem odd that we set things up like this and are even encouraging it, as it may appear to be a loophole in the system, but there are a couple of things that need to be kept in mind. We don't mind you selling multiple copies of the same item in the Junkyard, BUT, the big difference is that you MUST have the item IN HAND AND READY TO SHIP whereas items in the Project Runs forum are often sold in a presale, before they are made. You cannot sell an item you do not have ready to ship in the Junkyard.

2) Offering services/commision work. Is that available to new premium members?

Currently, this isn't available to a new premium member.

It is primarily just that. We can' ensure anyone isn't a scammer or won't flake out, but we have this in place so the damage a fly-by-nighter can do is limited to single items as opposed to massive runs.

Would there be a way to require some kind of verification, say the individuals company website. Maybe a portfolio of completed items or proof they have the equipment/ know how? Thank you for your time.

Currently, this isn't available, mostly due to the technical complications it introduces.

Hey Art, any thoughts of having a little image, kind of like the JunkYard, in the Project Runs section? Not sure how well it would work; but I like how visual the new JunkYard looks...

Funny you should mention that. Montagar and I were just talking yesterday about the possibility of making the Project Runs forum a bit more like the new Junkyard. The problem is that Project Runs can be so different from one another, that it is difficult to bring them into a single form, like we did with the Junkyard, which also allowed for thumbnails to be used. Not only that, but you often have interest threads that are created so early that there isn't a photo of the product. I would love to tell you "yes" but the truth is, this isn't something we are likely to pursue in the near future as we want to finish up our revisions to the new Junkyard and then our next big push will be a Responsive designed theme for the site (and getting rid of tapatalk).

I think it would be worth thinking about requiring a "budgeted amount to be spent" in the WTB threads. I've contacted several people who were looking for items. I had several I wasn't using (but wasn't planning on creating a for sale thread in the junkyard) so I offered them up at cost with free shipping only to have the people try to get them discounted further. It makes me hesitant to ever contact anyone again because I'd rather not waste my time. Anyway, just a thought.

Not trying to change the subject, or hijack the thread, but why are you getting rid of tapatalk? I actually do most of my forum reading with tapatalk. Dropping it would most likely drastically reduce the time that I spend on the forum.

Tapatalk is a third party program that all but overruns the forum with its own branding and approach. Don't get me wrong, a number of people use it, but the idea is, if we create a good responsive design, you wouldn't need tapatalk and would be able to interact with the forum on a mobile devise without it.

Art .. removing Tapatalk is like giving me no reasons to go to the bathrooms while at work .. what will I do?!?

I'm actually kinda serious here .. really useful apps .. and all my forum browsing at home is done through Tapatalk on my ipad .. :(

Is there any way to start a thread for just this subject? So that we can see the bottom of this?

I am not following you or maybe you guys aren't understanding what we are planning. A responsive design is one that changes and morphs based on the device you are using. Right now, the RPF style is the RPF style. On a mobile device (unless it switches the mobile style, which is horrible) you just get a shrunk down and horrible version of the full site, which is all but impossible to use on something like an iPhone. With a responsive style, the whole site will remold itself to the size of your device so it is usable. It isn't like we are taking away the ability to use the RPF on a mobile device... we are building this FOR mobile devices.

Well, seems like you know what you're doing :)
In any case, I'm always opened to change! So if you say it goes as fast and is as user friendly as the app, then I'm all go!

Just to clear it out so that you can follow my point, I'm only using Tapatalk for the RPF, since that is the only forum I'm really browsing. That means clicking on the Tapatalk app is like my direct door to the RPF, no need to open a browser then favorite then RPF. Then it's because it's so easy to see the threads, what's read/new or not, but then, that's your point where all that is gonna be refactored .. so I'm all good!

Thanks Art!

So unless we get a premium membership you won't let us use RPF on our Tapatalk anymore?!

Josh, my bad, we just derailed a little bit from the original topic .. Tapatalk has nothing to do with Premiums or not. They just want to not have to use it anymore to be able to browse on mobile .. like having a m.therpf.com.

What?!? How in the world did you get that from what I posted?!? No, no no. This has nothing at all to do with Premium Membership.

Let me see if I can explain more thoroughly. The software that runs the RPF was created before there was mobile. When mobile came along the RPF didn't work well with it. So the software developers created a "mobile style"...

... and it sucked.

Then they created an app...

... and it sucked more.

Then a third party company (Tapatalk) stepped up to the plate and designed a better mousetrap. Many of us who run this software started using tapatalk until a native mobile version came along. Tapatalk is only a stopgap. Well, the software company is continuing to suck, so we are just going to handle it on our own and create a single theme that works well both for desktops and mobile natively. Once that is done, we will no longer have a need for tapatalk.

Again, just so we are 100% clear, this has NOTHING to do with Premium Membership.
