James Bond: Skyfall

Compared to what I was afraid of I thought that product placement wasn't so bad. Could have been a LOT worse. I was expecting him to go to a bar and order one. That would have been bad.

Ya it was subtle but I was waiting for a scene built around the product placement. I'm glad it didn't happen.

Saw it last night. It was awesome. A clear move away from "James Bourne" without going back to the more ridiculous 80s/90s era.

I think they've finally struck a good balance in the stylistic choices, in a way that reminded me somewhat of Casino Royale, while still clearly tipping the hat to the older era.

My only issue is some rather glaring continuity problems with the rest of the series. But on the other hand, there's a level on which I don't think that really matters all that much.

In specific, I'm thinking of the Moneypenny connection and the DB5 somehow not being a "company car." That was a bit sloppy, but I suppose their attitude is "Screw it. We're not gonna try to explain it away. Just enjoy the movie for what it is."

I don't think it is... isn't it the car he won in Casino?

Then kindly explain to me the "after-market modifications" made to it.

It's clearly supposed to be the car from Goldfinger, except Goldfinger didn't happen? Or something? They're not really clear on that point.

It was a nod to Goldfinger. However, I think an agent could have pretty much whatever he wanted done with Q branch. Think about SEAL Team Six, they can have whatever they think they need for any mission. Mark Owen talks about this in his book. He said there is a sign above the firearms workshop that says "If you can dream it we can build it".

So I don't think its too hard to believe that a secret agent had a modified car. Heck M knew about it so that should tell you something. Oh AND after all its a movie lol

Since CR Goldfinger didn't happen, however he could have had the car outfitted on his own.

Sloppy? Sure, but I loved the nod. :)

I think that all Bonds adventures are still deemed to have 'happened'. All the different actors are the same character. Ok, if you over analyse you end up tying yourself in knots, but they are just meant to be adventures.

The Craig Bonds fit and sort of run together together and happen to include an 'origin' story of sorts with CR, but as far I I could see Skyfall is sort of later in his career and some of the other adventures could have happened.

Now
Moneypenny... we just have to suspend disbelief and all the other receptionists are interchangeable.

Also
I don't see that they are at Universal Exports either, the final scene seems to me to be at MI6 TBH
.

CR was advertised as a reboot of the series so I see it as almost an "alternate universe" thing. Agreed though, you can't over analyze it.

Definitely has that feeling. Referring to themselves as the old guard.

Disagree there. When they're talking on the roof they're clearly not on top of MI6. They're definitely at the new office. Lesson learned from the MI6 attack.

Ah but,
she does mention that it's somewhere that she didn't think they could get to, a wasted view. Must admit it doesn't look like Vauxhall!

I don't like the idea of it being a absolute 'reboot'. Like a lot of old characters before, I feel all their adventures just happen 'sometime' in their history. IE Tarzan, or heck.... MASH, didn't that series actually last longer than the war?

Casino Royale was most certainly a reboot to the Bond franchise. But I think O_B made a good point in the rebooted franchise being a elsewords timeline from the original Bond series. Kind of like they started out on different paths.

I took that as discovering something about the new building. ;)

I get what you mean but it's REALLY hard to say that when clearly Bond goes in and out of major events like the Cold War or Afghan revolution that are tied to certain time frames.

And yes, MASH lasted about 8 years longer than the Korean war. :lol

Yet he has his DB 5 with the same numberplate as seen in at least a couple of his previous adventures. Sure his age make it impossible for him to be the same person as appeared in Dr No... but it is all fiction anyway!

It was a nod which I was really excited about. It was nothing more than a treat to the fans.

Indeed, but as Sundowner (still can't get used to calling him that) notes it was just a nod. It was in Goldfinger, Thunderball, Diamonds are Forever, Goldeneye, Tomorrow Never Dies. In the reboot he wins the car in Casino Royale.

All that said you're right. It's just fiction. Trying to make the James Bond series work in your brain just will end in it exploding.
