Jackieisrockin's IM3 Iron Patriot Pepakura Files! V2 files coming soon!

Re: Jackieisrockins Iron Patriot (IM3) Pepakura Files! Links in first post! Forearm a

Great work, Jackie! You're going to have to build this suit eventually (or get someone to build it for you) in the real world :lol

I know :unsure i'd really love to make the suit just not sure whether to make it with foam or paper.

I find that foam is easier, however it is a pain to make it harder using PVA and then having to seal and paint. Using the paper, is a pain in the but because it has so many parts that need to be cut, folded, and glued. It does mean you have to use resin, bondo and all that good stuff, but the finished look if you take your time and do a good job, is amazing!!

Just my thoughts.

So am i to assume that the benefit of foam is that it's easier to make the build? Or is there is something else that i'm missing. As i have not started yet i'm just trying to understand how to get the best results possible. Thanx...GM

I prefer paper, because suits made of paper are more detailed than foam, and may be more rigid than foam suits. I think it worth building your suit for longer

Re: Jackieisrockins Iron Patriot (IM3) Pepakura Files! Links in first post! Forearm a

It should not make it long and wide or anything like that. if you scale it by width, height, or scale factor, Pepakura will automatically make the entire piece symmetrical and proportionate.

From what i gather, you want to leave some room for padding and electronics anyway.

Gotcha thanks!

often the scale factor can be deceiving.
I for my height I had to use the factor 390.02532, but would come huge.
I'm using the 340, which gives me the exact length and appears to be slightly larger than my body (space that will be used for fiberglass).
I have already printed the biceps and forearm and glued, they came perfect.

Perfect thanks!

Twisted6- I think you and everyone else would be better off using the "Measure distance between two points" tool to find your scale for a more accurate fit. I did a QUICK measurement to find my "scale" which is probably not that accurate and ill have to do again if i plan on building this suit :)

You've got to build the suit! :D all this hard work and no play? LOL

Yep, point-to-point measuring in Pepakura is the best I think. I scaled my files this way (top of neckpiece-to bottom of cod) and have had absolutely no problems. You can also check other measurements (bicep diameter, etc) this way.

If you're not sure how to scale using point-to-point, I explained how I did it back on page 18:

Thanks Laellee I will def try it this way.

Paper gets you the nooks and cranny of all the edges sharpness and such. Foam: I've seen helmets that look like it was foam there are no curves or anything like that so as stealth work heat gun would work best for FOAM. On the other hand I was doing some homework and found this material Its foam harder then styrofoam but almost like it but called selitac foam.

I got this idea from one of the members here but forgot he built a MK VI i think it was for his son. and they way it turned was :popcorn mouth drooling good. esp. the smoothness. He used this foam with Styrospray 1000. I don't have the funds for this styrospray 1000 so i'm trying to go different alternatives and test them out. But I found out that bondo works perfect on this.

I caked it on before but its coming along. :D :behave

Re: Jackieisrockins Iron Patriot (IM3) Pepakura Files! Links in first post! Forearm a

Damn yeah, that looks really smooth !
Although, for a build like the iron patriot, I don't think you loose much (if any) details by doing it in foam. Plus it's cheaper, less time consuming and less toxic, very light and flexible. In the other hand it is less durable and it's harder (but not impossible) to get a smooth finish.
Personally I am going with a mix of the two : fiberglass inside the foam for durability, and multiple layers of PVA, plastidip, adhesion promoter and paint plus some kind of flexible polyester putty to fill gaps and imperfections. I'm also very careful when cutting and glueing the foam to avoid seems as much as possible. Basically I'm mixing Docholiday's and Indiefilmgeek's painting methods with Quovadis' idea of reinforcing the foam with fiberglass. Thanks to all of them for sharing these techniques by the way.

Look what I got in the mail today :
img2439i.jpg

I started applying resin in my gloves, and building the forearm. Next I'll fiberglass the rest of the arm and shoulder to test paint and apply the decals ! That's all I can at the moment do since the forearm took what was left of my foam.
And another advantage of the ikea tubing : spray some clear adhesion promoter, then duplicolor anodized red and tadaaa ! That's exactly what I was aiming for.
img2441pn.jpg

It doesn't show well, but it has a really beautiful metallic shine, like a captain america shield.

I found it.

http://www.therpf.com/f24/first-time-build-im-mk-vi-selitac-161499/

its made by peruski

Freakin sick!!

I don't know if any other foam can look that smooth with paint. plus to top that off you cant even see the parts that are glued together! LOL and its lighter then eva foam. In my opinion at least. :D

Here is where to order them :D

Flooring Foam

Damm, that looks sweet. I might try some of that, at least for the helmet.

Nice Find! :thumbsup

Hey guys i should have asked this awhile ago but, on the first page it reads scale (425.232765) 6'8.5" . That's a six foot eight and a half. Or is it? The numbers in brackets is that a scaling size? Please forgive my ignorance, perhaps i missed something in previous posts. Thanx... GM

Thanks!! Yea I might just do the helmet again LOL and try Teragon's way for all the rest of the pieces LOL

yes that is a six foot eight and a half tall person. the scale factor is the number in the quotes.

but keep in mind, i had asked this question myself, there are not boots on the model this is all being made from, so there is not a real height to scale from yet. You could always just measure each part of your body and scale the files that way if you wanted to, instead of using a scale factor, but that might make some piece larger or smaller on you.

Re: Jackieisrockins Iron Patriot (IM3) Pepakura Files! Links in first post! Forearm a

I think i will make the helmet out of this type of foam. You have to treat it like a bondo and resin build, but it looks fantastic and you can use foam templates to do it. Not to mention it is also sand-able!! so if you have a crease that did not cut right, you can sand it. I also think this would be a good material to make the cannon out of.

Selitac 5mm Sheet (5 sheets)

Here is a pic of a helmet make with this type of foam.

Irongatsu- Dont worry im working on the file for the elbow and the handplate as well :) It shouldnt be too long

made into paper, it takes much more time, you have to commit to x all the right pieces and you have to be good with bundo ... but the result is perfect. if you have time and want better paper ...

Thanks jackieisrockin

Oh man! i was thinking the same LMFAO!! I was just cutting out the foam shapes last night..just to see but haven't taken any pix but will do when i get back home (but in my own opinion) Its super light that a servo can handle its weight plus with the Styrospray 1000 it would look mind blowing good :D

Re: Jackieisrockins Iron Patriot (IM3) Pepakura Files! Links in first post! Forearm a

Oh and FYI for this Seltic Foam, So i bought a cheap hot glue gun and the glue gets way too hot that it sort of melts the edges that you are trying to glue. So i bought a different glue gun and it was perfect :D

That paint finish looks great! I've gotta go get some of that material.

Thanks for the heads up on that, i was wondering about that myself. Do you know what temp your glue gun gets? I just ordered 5 sheets to play around with and test it out. i should have it in for the weekend. then i do a test build for the helmet and post the pics. I finally got the scale for the helmet right. it only took me 4 builds! :lol

That was the thing, it was so cheap like $1 i don't even know what temp it was LOL the 5mm perfect and sturdy. 3mm that they have i perfect for bending and all the great stuff but very brittle if i could get that StyroSpray 1000 3mm is perfect. I Can coat inside and out :D But yea let me know how how it goes. Oh one more thing I find it easier to glue the splits if you pinch the foam where the area that its suppose to bend. IF you don't it cracks like a cracker LOL so before you go OH S*$%T!! (this is on a 5mm) 3 mm will bend like theres no tomorrow. :D enjoy!

Re: Jackieisrockins Iron Patriot (IM3) Pepakura Files! Links in first post! Forearm a

Hobby glue guns usually come in low temp, high temp, and adjustable models. Your best bet would be to get an adjustable; low temp works great on paper and lighter stuff, but some foams and heavier materials need the higher temp sticks to bond. Either way, make sure you get the right sticks, the sell high and low-temp sticks as well. I use low-temp on all of my paper pepping, less burns :)
