It was Purely QMx Sonic Screwdrivers...

I had a rant here, but deleted it because I was ranting about the wrong thing... I may post a replacement rant.

To answer an earlier post. Yeah I remember reading somewhere that CT did approach the BBC for the licence. There were various knock-backs & it was awarded to MFX without them producing a demo prop, prob cos it was easier to hand over via in house? The Stamp shop & purple balmanche also threw their hat in the ring & made a prototype, but that was rejected as it was too much like the TV version. Mind you this was in the early days of the wide slotted 9th Sonic & the Beeb at the time didn't want any slots seen.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought CT also contacted MFX earlier on re making parts. Will try & find out info unless anyone know & can add to it?

Still, I do find it odd if QMx had paid for a licence, why sit on it? Wouldn't you want to get some of your money back asap?

anyone who wants a screen accurate prop from the real prop maker go to store.qmxonline.com/11th-Doctors-Sonic-Screwdriver--Artisan-Master-Series_p_163.html
it'll cost you though

We know. There are a few threads on it here and Robatto is a member here :thumbsup

Neil addressed this a while back in one of his posts. Basically (and this is my paraphrase here) they want to focus their time and energy on their video/dvd tutorial series, which is a much higher profit margin line of business.

My personal impression is that the Sonic wasn't a big winner for them financially. Please recall that they are a business, whose purpose is to make money. My guess is that sales were disappointing, and margins were thin to begin with. Frankly, I also think the absolute meltdown that the RPF presented them with was enough to sour them on the experience. It was a cluster-eff of galactic proportions, and frankly, if I was offering a product that had a thin profit margin and didn't sell too well, the LAST thing I would need is a bunch of whiners having interweb explosions at me.

In my mind, it's zero wonder why MFX is no longer producing props for fans.

MM, Mooneye is talking about QMx not MFX.

MFX made the best prop replica masks EVER offered to the public bar no-one else from any franchise. Shame they stopped.

QMX had their sonics with them at Wondercon this weekend and I took the opportunity to find out how things were going with the Eleventh Doctor's Sonic. I heard the following three things from three different QMX members of staff:

(photo from Agent M Loves Tacos via QMX's Facebook Page)

  • The sonic that they had with them was a screen-used sonic.
  • The sonic was a new prototype for a non-opening metal sonic.
  • The sonic was the same Robatto prototype from SDCC.

It's obvious to anyone who had seen these sonics before and from the picture above that the third statement was correct, but it was striking how different each story was.

Now, before anyone piles on and accuses me of trolling or spreading misinformation, each of these statements was made in person by a member of QMX staff. I know other RPFers were present and were giving the same stories by QMX staff.

I heard a bit about this, so I'm glad I get to nip it in the bud. Thanks for bringing it up, tho. Saved me having to type out the whole explanation ;-)

Answer is, as you correctly surmised, 3: The sonic was the same Robatto prototype from SDCC.

I'd bet money I was the one who said that, btw. :)

We had a couple of newer QMx employees at Wondercon. Given the new booth set up (and not having Nick right there as we did at SDCC) we had a few more people discussing the sonics than last time.

Sounds like I have to go back and quiz them on a few things. :behave

Wondeful, thanks for clearing that up! You should have seen my face drop when she said "non-opening display piece"!

At the risk of white knighting a licensee, their business model of selling high volume/low price items and low volume / high price items is totally on point. I expect that they doing rather well - sonics or no sonics.

But still, showing off the Robotto Sonic...again...is still not enough for those who have been patiently waiting for the last two years for an accurate replica of this prop.

They have missed the boat. Anyone wo wanted a high-end 10th sonic got one already, long ago from MFX or CT. The newest kit took care of the ones on a tighter budget. Why even bother with it at this point? Matt is going into his third series as the Doctor and still no sonic of his. By the time they finally release that, we'll be on the 12th Doctor and clamouring for HIS sonic!

Not to put too fine a point on it, but let's give credit where credit is due... QMx DID release an 11th Doctor Sonic Screwdriver for sale to the public! They were an Artisan Master Edition, with each and every one hand-made by Nick Robotto, exactly the way he makes them for the show! So there will never be a better, more accurate "replica" than that! :cool:thumbsup

However... as you may or may not already know, only 25 were made, they were sold for a price of $4,000.00 US... which is as much as some people pay for a used CAR... and they are completely SOLD OUT!!! But still, they DID offer an 11th Doctor Sonic for sale!

Now I'm not taking the P here as I genuinely don't know due to being in the outback of Tanzania for a good few months. But did QMx have anything DW at SDCC this year. I think I can predict the answer, but hope springs eternal.

If they had anything on show, it wasn't anything new.

Is this fact, or are you, like me, considerably pessimistic?

Who was that girl on here who worked for QMx and kept on calling me out on my pessimism? That was two years ago now, and the vapourware has turned into something even less. How annoying. At least other companies have been given sonic rights. That universal remote jobby looks cool, well made and thought out. If only the BBC would sell the prop rights to someone who would actually put something out apart from empty promises. The ship is moving and possibly sailed now. Doctor Who is not as anticipated as a programme or as coveted in the prop department as it was two years back. Kinda sad from us DW prop fans perspective. I can't see any replication companies wanting the licence in the next year or two if things continue on this route. Even the toy companies have started applying the brakes.

It's not fact or pessimism. It's just that a lot of RPFers were at SDCC and if there were something new there, a thread would have popped up. Or some news would have bubbled through from somewhere. Also not very promising is the fact that they didn't bring their TARDIS this year.
