Ironman foam first ever build!! COMPLETED!!

Re: Ironman fom first ever build. Ideas welcome!!

No problem phaeton. Glad I can be of any help.
Thanks dox! I will post extensive pics of my setup. I'll be gone for the weekend. I'll try to set it up next week.
@IMIM2: haha! I'll check it out!

Re: Ironman fom first ever build. Ideas welcome!!

Sup homies? I finally finished another piece! (while watching iron man 1 for inspiration!)
Here is the cod piece. It turned out alright. It seem like it will fit perfect. But I need to make an opening. Does anyone have a good idea on how to do that? I'd rather do it right than by trial and error on my finished cod!
I was thinking maybe cut it on the back on the outside of one of the buttockes. And add a flap and Velcro. That seems to be the only flat(ish) place to make the cut...

Re: Ironman fom first ever build. Ideas welcome!!

You want me to show you, how I do mine? (That doesn't sound right):facepalm
I use magnets instead of velcro to close the gaps (That doesn't sound right either).
It is very hard to align the split by yourself, so magnet will help you finding the right spot (What !!!!!)
Mine turned out too small, so I place two pieces of foams to widen the b**t. I've got more comments but I have to stop here :lol:lol:lol:lol:lol)

Re: Ironman fom first ever build. Ideas welcome!!

Haha! Good to see your mind is as dirty as mine, IMIM!
Yeah, that would be fantastic if you could show some pis of how you did the closure on yours. I have scoured these forums and have yet to see how people do it. (aww geez, there I go! :lol )
And with the magnets, I have had trouble with them on my first helm. They are so strong, they pull right out of the foam no matter how I try to mount them. :(

That's for the help, bro!

Re: Ironman fom first ever build. Ideas welcome!!

With magnets, do not try to separate them by pull, but slide. Which is great for cod.

Pulling requires more force than slide. That's why the magnets gets off from the foam.

Another tips gluing magnets:
1.glue directly to the untreated foam, PVA, resin, paint will weaken the bond.
2. Scratch/scribe the surface of the glue side of the magnet. Rough surface provide stronger bond. Not much, just enough.
3. If you already painted, PVA or resin, just run the tips of the hotmelt gun in circular motion (without the glue), until the covering surfaces (Paint, PVA, whatever) is melted away and pushed to the side. You will see foam surface now is exposed. The place your magnet.
4. Powerglue might be a solution too.

You need to have different sizes of magnets to get the feeling what size do you need at where. However, stacking them will increase the strength too.

Strong magnet are rare-earth magnet, so
"great magnet comes with a great responsibility", don't loose them.

Did I put tip on helmet magnet? I forgot, I have to check.

Happy building.

PS: I actually put 4 additional foam pieces to make the cod wider. You see my sides had no seam, so it's cleaner, yet I still maintain the shape. Some templates actually have unnecessary cut/seam. You don't have to follow everything.

Re: Ironman fom first ever build. Ideas welcome!!

Thanks IMIM. I just now saw your post. I actually ended up splitting my cod exactly where you did. I did use Velcro but I'm not sure I'm happy with it. We will see.
I had to add a couple pieces in the back to make it fit. But they are hardly noticeable. I tried to upload some close up pics of my closure but my phone is being difficult. So here are a couple of me fully suited up: (yes, iron man wears boxer-briefs! :lol)

And here is the back. You can see where it doesn't close quite perfectly because of the Velcro.

It's good enough for me. Time to move on to the legs! :)

Re: Ironman fom first ever build. Ideas welcome!!

Also, I'm going to remove those top two pieces of foam from the cod and attach them to the abs/sides piece.

Re: Ironman fom first ever build. Ideas welcome!!

Helagak,
I've got tons of boring things to say on cod-abs connection.
I am still not happy with mine.
If you see my photoshoot, the magnets on front abs actually gone. I had to add chest-abs extention, blah..blahh... but like I said, you won't notice it unless you concentrate on my suit (yeah, MY SUIT!)

One thing I noticed quickly that the split got different level.
I draw a picture on how to fix that.
I also notice from behind, the cod look like a cat's face (green eyes and whiskers) :lol
The two green thing (holes), I made extra foam shaped like side-spine and close the gap.

Two upper flap things, actually you need to angle it more vertical (unless the cod is too small, you actually force it to fit, so the flap bends).
If it is too small enlarge it like I did.

I put eight, three on each side-one at the spine-one in the front, fastex (or quick release). The flap is actually function as cover. So you might want to consider that.
Plan ahead what and how you going to do with that, your suit is almost finish so it's about time you plan how to connect it.

Actually I still got plenty in my mind, but your suit is byfar better than mine. Good job man.

Re: Ironman fom first ever build. Ideas welcome!!

you are far too kind IMIM. your build has been my insperation.
you are exactly right with that drawing. i didnt account for the thickness of the velcro. that is an easy enough fix.
I have been going over and over in my head different ways i can tie the suit together in the chest-abs-cod area. I have a few ideas, but i think i need to build the Brace piece and then see what i have. I should probably build the neck and brace pieces before i move on to the legs anyways, but im just so BORED of cutting templates and foam!! haha :lol

Re: Ironman fom first ever build. Ideas welcome!!

Been following this build for a while.....i really have to post now to comment how awesome this suit is looking.....keep up the good work helagak.

Seeing this suit come together has given me a resurgence to continue my own build

Looking forward to more updates mate:cool

Re: Ironman fom first ever build. Ideas welcome!!

Thanks mark. I appreciate it! :)
Do you have a build thread? I'm always interested in my fellow iron men! Haha

Re: Ironman fom first ever build. Ideas welcome!!

i just posted a few pics in someone else's thread...i suppose i should make my own thread really:rolleyes

Re: Ironman fom first ever build. Ideas welcome!!

Here is a pathetically small update considering how long it's been since I last updated. Ugh! I've been so busy! It sucks!
Anyways, I finished the neck piece. It's out of craft foam. That stuff is crazy hard to glue edge to edge cause it's so thin!!

Just a simple Velcro closure:

And of course I had to try it on with my chest ad back pieces! :)

(sorry for the sour face. I'm whooped!!)

I finally have a weekend with NO PLANS!! So I'm gonna try like heck to get the thighs done. :)

Re: Ironman fom first ever build. Ideas welcome!!

Question to anyone that knows; does the neck piece stick up thru the brace? Or visa-versa?
Do you put on the brace then the neck, or put on the neck the the brace over it? I'm not 100% sure but I'm leaning towards put the neck on the slide the brace down over it.

Re: Ironman fom first ever build. Ideas welcome!!

When you say 'brace' what exactly do you mean Helagak? Are you talking about how you attach the suit to your body kind of brace? I'm looking at making a suit and this is the first time I've found a reference to a brace lol Makes me worry I've missed something :p

Re: Ironman fom first ever build. Ideas welcome!!

I used regular 6mm for the neck piece, but all the horizontal ones I glued it to an old black T-shirt (or any kind of black stretched fabric). So it has two piece, front and the back. Both are attached to vertical "pole" on the sides.
One side use velcro, just like you did. So I have more flexibilty. yet quite rigid because the thickness of the foam.
I just glued the bottom hozrizontal ones to the base.

I didn't use the brace, but I extend the bottom neck piece. It kinda falps that extend to shoulder and velcro it to the back piece, right in the shoulder area. If not velcroed, the neck piece can rotate almost 90 degree on my neck.To me, the brace serve no function, so I didn't make it.
Try to put it on and move around, tilt and spin your head. If it stays (which probably won't), you don't need to anchor it (to brace or back)

Mine had a little gap between the neck and the back piece, so I extend it by using "hump" from Mk3.

Good luck on the thigh and shin. Remember that there is a slight asymmetry (which I hated a lot). That thing is a real pain, especially when trying to match betwwen R and L side.

Re: Ironman fom first ever build. Ideas welcome!!

Your suit is looking great so far ! Keep up mate :D

Re: Ironman fom first ever build. Ideas welcome!!

@paradox: the brace is a piece that ties together the back, chest and neck piece. Look at anyone's files and you will see a pdo for a "brace"

@IMIM2: I believe the brace also has the last "vertibre"(sp?) that fills in the gap between the back and the neck.

@bibou: thanks for the encouraging words! :)

I would say its the neck first then the brace over it. Otherwise if the brace went on first, and then the neck, the rear neck piece would cover the top spine section amd it wouldn't be seen, plus I don't think the neck would stretch over that part anyway, and would look silly sat straight on top of it.
