Ironman foam first ever build!! COMPLETED!!

Re: Ironman fom first ever build!! New helm and 3d hip pods page 5

Dox: that is exactly how my eye light circuit is going to work.

IMIM: I think I am going to skip the hinge altogether on this helm. I'm not sure yet.
As for magnet placement, I need 6 more magnets (plus 8 for the back piece!) then you will see the method to my madness! ;-)

Re: Ironman fom first ever build!! New helm and 3d hip pods page 5

Please Helagak, do the hinge, it's very simple and very easy. You are "this" close. Trust me. Unless you go electronic servos.

Remember what I said about magnets? :lol, "Your method of madness"....already?:lol:lol

No seriously, using magnets that magnitude, you are going to have problem open and close. Try using smaller ones, you can always increase the power (see my tips). Either smaller ones or using less.
I tried it before, got excited about magnets, but having problem in open and close.

As for the back, use my tips, really, it's simple and easy, why you complicated things by using magnets?

To secure the bend (faceplate and back head), run several glue strips, see JFcustom's method. Otherwise, you go crazy trying to fit those parts (and ended up using so much magnets).

Fix the nose yet?

Re: Ironman fom first ever build!! New helm and 3d hip pods page 5

Why magnets? Because magnets are awesome!! :p

Re: Ironman fom first ever build!! New helm and 3d hip pods page 5

nice work with the hip pod. I've been experimenting with that and google sketch-up and cubify-invent and can't get beyond a square and cylinder yet :D
I'd really like to be able to 3d print the finger pieces of a suit.

Re: Ironman fom first ever build!! New helm and 3d hip pods page 5

Cayce, thanks. If you can get autodesk inventer, check it out. Its fantastic for making mechanical type parts. All the other modeling progs start with 3d shapes and have you mold them to you liking. Inventer starts with 2d drawings and lets you extrude them into 3d. Much better for things like the hip pods and such. Not so good if you were trying to model say, a chest piece. (unless you want to go totally "tony stark" and build it piece by piece!!)

I am Absolutly going to make finger pieces when I get my printer. I feel like foam is too flimsy and dont have the pacience to mold and cast them.

Great work I'm in the process of building my own foam suit , had never seen the magnets on the helmet great idea .

Re: Ironman fom first ever build!! New helm and 3d hip pods page 5

I will give that a try. What model printer are you getting? I have been looking around at what's available in the hobby market and trying to figure out what would be good enough on a low budget.

Hey, I'm going to get a makerbot replicator. It's about 2 grand. It's about the top end of the hobby market. Look into reprap. There are kits you can get and build for around the $500 range. And they do some really great printing for the price range.

I finished a thigh!!! I thought this day would never come!!!
Now just another thigh, 2 shins, 2 boots, 2 hands and electronics.... Ugh

Your build is looking great mate. Loved reading about it!

One tip I used to strengthen and help align and reshape the helmet, was to glue lengths of prebent plastic coated gardening wire to the inside. I have a strip going ear to ear over the top and close to the face opening, another going around the base of helmet, including going into the chin, and another small piece under the eyes of the face plate. It allows the helmet to maintain a good shape, and you can easily reshape it just by pushing and pulling in certain areas. It's also meant that I can very easily have a two part foam helmet with hinged face plate, which other foam builds cannot due to not being stiff enough. Something else I did was glue a piece of relatively stiff card over the ear area which helps keep the sides flat. Something that foam helmets have trouble with when worn as your ears push the sides out lol!

I also used the same wire inside the shoulder bells, and may use it elsewhere like in the chest and back. I figure the stiffer the parts, the less it will look like foam when moving around. Strips of gaffer tape (left over from a mankin build) also just about doubled the rigidity of the armor pieces and for very little effort.

This is my first ever build of anything like this, and am just in the process of coating pre-painting :)

Haha I will also be using smaller 'energy drink' can bottoms for the elbow and knee joints. Ill be gluing some other bits into them prior to paint so that they dont look quite as obvious. If you like those, youll like my margarine tub hip pods ;)

I love how addictive these builds can be...i find myself walking round the supermarket looking at stuff in a whole new light :lol

Really inventive use of the margarine tub for the hip pods mate:cool

Thanks! The magnets wasn't just my idea. I picked that up from someone on this board many moons ago. (I.E: some time in the last month and a half! :lol)

I finished my other thigh! Thanks to IMIM2 for sending me some critiques of the first one. I combined some of my templates to make bigger pieces and less cuts. And I fixed how the pieces connect just above the knee. Now I just have to fix the first thigh! >_< I'll post some better pics later tonight. I took this late last night and didn't have my photographer/wife to help me. Haha.

And yes, that is my "teen girl squad" t-shirt! If you dont know them, you should e ashamed!! :lol

Re: Ironman fom first ever build!! New helm and 3d hip pods page 5

Oh I envy you.....your suit looks great.
Seems my motivational poster actually works :lol

Re: Ironman fom first ever build!! New helm and 3d hip pods page 5

Lol! Yup! I'm in high gear. I would print out your poster at poster size and hang it in "stark industries" (aka: my back room) but I don't think the wife would approve. ;-)

And how are you jealous?? You already have a bad ***** iron man suit! :lol
