Re: WIP Ironman Costume for 5yr old - Suiting Mikey Up! 10/6

A bit of progress last night...

RIGGING:
For anyone looking to use nylon straps with plastic connectors, I would pleased to discover a GREAT source while watching THIS youtube tutorial on simple foam costuming for cosplay.

As mentioned in this tutorial, WALMART has these straps and clips CHEAP! But you have to look in the CAMPING supply area. I'd always found more expensive ones in the craft area, but last night I was able to buy out all three packages of plastic clips (x2 per container - so SIX 1" plastic clips total) for less than $2 (58 cents each per package!).

I haven't mounted them yet, but I took measurements and even cut some straps and stitched the permanent connection side together on two of them so I'm ready to make some suspenders for Mikey's cod piece tonight!

LEG ARMOR PROGRESS:
I don't think I'm posted a picture of how the legs came out after weathering them a bit. I haven't added the rub-n-buff 'battle damage' yet, but I think they look MUCH better with a bit of blackwashing.

BOOTS UPDATE:
And finally, I got around to building up the second boot top and then hit both boot tops with several coats of plasti-dip.

Yes, yes, I know they're black. I've bought up all the red plasti-dip in Knoxville, so I had to finish off this project with a can of black. It will be fine once I hit it with the adhesive promoter and red auto paint! :):thumbsup

urggghh.. i wish i saw this sooner i ordered my straps and clips from amazon last week =\ , looking great indie, i was curious how well does the velcro's adhesive on the painted pieces? im trying to figure out how i should mount the back pieces to the brace on the shoulders and back

...I was curious how well does the velcro's adhesive on the painted pieces? I'm trying to figure out how I should mount the back pieces to the brace on the shoulders and back.

That's a good question. I've always glued the velcro down prior painting the pieces, so I'm not sure how well post-painting velcro attachment would do.

...also, since I made Mikey's chest/back/brace all one piece, I'm not very familiar with how the back and chest attach via the brace. I think Jordan and some of the other foam builders actually skip the brace piece entirely (and just build up the neck area manual where they need to see it).

Sorry, I'm not much help on this one! :confused

Re: WIP Ironman Costume for 5yr old - Leg/Boots/Rigging 10/13

ohh you glued ahead of time, what did you do to make sure you didn't paint the velcro?

Re: WIP Ironman Costume for 5yr old - Leg/Boots/Rigging 10/13

Little by little...

Tonight while watching DVR'ed episodes of Community and Parks and Rec, I sketched out the lines and inked the ab plates onto the satin material I've attached to Mikey's under-armor.

Here are the pics with and without the chest piece...

I'm thinking those lines might need to be a bit thicker/darker, but for right now they will have to do as other things need finishing!

Since is was raining again tonight (which prevented me from finishing up the painting on the boots), I also knocked out the last pieces of the arc reactor. I had to glue some of the detail pieces on and then finish up that part with a thin piece of plastic over the entire thing to seal it all in and make it look 'finished'

Here's a shot showing the glare off the clear cover it now has...

And since I can't avoid turning it on when I'm taking pictures of it, here are two more pictures of the arc reactor ablaze!

This one was with my flash so you could see some details rather than just a blinding light. :):thumbsup

It's not perfect - but I'm ok with how it turned out!

Tomorrow, hopefully the boots get finished up so I can also begin working on the 'top-of-the-foot' plate I'll need to add just to mask that natural gap in the armor.

Re: WIP Ironman Costume for 5yr old - Leg/Boots/Rigging 10/14

So cool. The arc reactor is amazing. I hope you get paid back in candy at least a portion of what's invested. Lol

Re: WIP Ironman Costume for 5yr old - Leg/Boots/Rigging 10/13

Daym indie u simply amaze me, great idea on the reactor cover now I need to find a clear plastic that I could use and somehow cut a perfect circle out of lol... Ur reactor looks great and the blinding light great job!, the ab idea is seriously perfect for a chile now he can have fun and not have the hassle of hard to move ab pieces =)

Re: WIP Ironman Costume for 5yr old - Leg/Boots/Rigging 10/14

Re: WIP Ironman Costume for 5yr old - Leg/Boots/Rigging 10/14

Diggin the arc! Very nice

Re: WIP Ironman Costume for 5yr old - Leg/Boots/Rigging 10/14

Looking great! I would go back over those lines like you mentioned. Maybe add some shading to simulate 3D overlap

Re: WIP Ironman Costume for 5yr old - Leg/Boots/Rigging 10/14

Sick sick sick amounts of talent, man. I can't WAIT to see this in person!! My camera and green screen are at your disposal!

Re: WIP Ironman Costume for 5yr old - Leg/Boots/Rigging 10/14

You could save some work on the hip pod mount using a popper. With just one popper it will rotate and might be less work than the ring method. That suit is looking better each time i see it dude. I have one calf and the shoes left to do, hoping to be complete by sunday then it will be filling out the gaps and completing the strapping.

Re: WIP Ironman Costume for 5yr old - Leg/Boots/Rigging 10/14

As always, it is looking amazing. You are almost done. Final push to the end. :thumbsup

Re: WIP Ironman Costume for 5yr old - Leg/Boots/Rigging 10/14

How..Oh how am I supposed to finish my iron man costume if you keep buying up the best supplies in Knoxville? Awesome work man. Eager to see it all come together.

Re: WIP Ironman Costume for 5yr old - Leg/Boots/Rigging 10/14

So, lot's of work... small overall progress.

First off, I got the helmet out to add padding and finish up the power cord wiring... Apparently, one of the drops it took had damaged a wire or LED deep in the eye lights! No lights (even after hours hunting around with a volt meter trying to find the problem). :cry

So, I finally dove in with a hot glue gun and melted enough of that crap to get to ENTIRE eye light packages I built removed. Square one.

After pulling everything out, I started with a completely new battery pack and lights. And since I didn't have a picture of how I had the LED Christmas lights set up inside the eyes before, I thought I'd snap a picture of my WIP this time.

It's messy, but works...

Add to this a thick white plastic plate and you get the eye lights from my youtube video 1 and video 2.

The ONLY positive thing about all this re-working is the fact that the new padding I had added to the helmet provided to be deep enough at the top of the helmet to HOUSE the batter pack!!! So, the helmet is now is completely self-contained -- no wiring connections to the rest of the suit!

That isn't the case with the repulsors, however, as they will need to be connected to their power supply (which will be hosted in the chest armor).

3AAA battery holder (from the 9LED flashlight w added switch)...

And here is the partially finished glove with the connectors...

Underarmor work...

I added some gold lines on the abs (which really makes that section 'pop', as well as the elbow joint sections. I'm using the same satin fabric that is a nearly perfect color match to the auto paint I'm using.

And finally, what it looks like with the armor on top of it...

I also got the boots painted, but I'll have to update that section later. I'm off to Atlanta to help teach a three day training session on IMAX marketing to +50 of our managers that run those screens.

That will certainly delay some of my costume progress over the next couple of days, but maybe I can sneak a couple pieces into my suitcase so I can work on them in the hotel room! :lol
