Iron Man see through eyes - CONCEPT

Looking good so far, dude!

If the finished product looks as good as it does in the photos and functions well I want one of the first sets!

hey man if those are see through eyes then you could just model a complete eye socket instead !
it would provide more accuracy, it would be easier to install onto the faceplate !
i would be definitely interested in a set of those when the time comes !

Thanks guys :) Modeling the entire socket would be ideal but I'm still pretty new to the whole 3D modeling thing. This is just the first test, mostly to verify the concept should work.

I have a couple more things to test - tinting the plexiglass itself to give a more even glow as well as to reduce the glare coming back as well as testing some automotive mirror tint on the inside lens to reflect the light completely away from your eyes. I want to test that out before I spend the hours I'll need to remodel it. That will also give me a good indication of the dimensions I'm going to need for the eyes.

I'll keep you all posted :)

More proof of concept pictures. I put some tint on the inside lens.

I have to get more pictures but I think the tinting might work. Especially if I increase the depth of the case to hide the LEDs better from the inside.

Progress!!

I mainly lurk around and the lack of vision was a BIG issue for me. I will be following this and if it works out, I want in on a set.

That was my issue as well. But since ProjectEarth7 wasn't able to provide them I figured I might as well give it a go :).

I was having issues trying to get the 3d model to print properly. The main problem is that I can't get the sections to automatically may flat, trying to manually do it. Once I do I should be able to print it out. I'm also tracking the cost of what I'm using etc so I have an idea of what it would cost to make them for people that want them.

That's a pretty sweet suit. The print seemed to almost work last night, I'll check the fit of the parts and review the model tonight. It looked like he molded the eye frame? I don't really have that option in the small condo I have at the moment, plus I'd have to break the mold up into at least two pieces anyway. I'm still messing around trying to get the best model. I did lengthen and widen it, don't want to go too wide yet until I get the light shining properly to make sure it gives a good glow. Now that I know the tinting should work, I'm trying to get an even glow from the eyes - clear plexiglass, even etched doesn't catch it properly so you have light but there are still hotspots from the LEDs. I'm almost thinking to do two sets of plexi inside - one tight snug on the LEDs sideways to give the even glow and then clear to see through.

__________
LED | | LED
-----------
_ tinted plexi to eye
| white/frosted plexi or similar to diffuse the light
- the clear plexi

Testing out new ideas as I go.

I found a great thread about a build from Fingaz here, wow, what a build that is. On page 19, he shows how he made a frame for the eyes, maybe this is something you might be interested in integrating into your design, something like this. IT would of course have to be modified to fit the LED's and such, but, it's an idea.

So I messed around with it a bit more - the 3d model didn't print smoothly - hiccuped 1/2 way through so the pieces don't fully line up. I had deepened the groove and it worked to block the lights from the eyes very well. It still isn't diffusing the way that I want it too so I tried a couple things, 1 piece of quick tie cut to length (not bad) and a small strip of printed glow in the dark blue - THAT did what I wanted. plus it's cool. But I think it's still not bright enough. I'm going to try to use 4 lights in the LED strip and see if that works. If it doesn't I'm going to try the other, more expensive, surface mount ones. Those are going to be harder to work with a require a much high power supply (12v vs 4.5v) but are much much brighter. But the concept works - the tint, even just on one side works to cut the glare especially when the lights themselves are below the vision line. If I have to I can tint on both sides of the lenses.

Prognosis is very very good. :D

Once I get the the eyes themselves working then it's on to the figuring out the power etc - that's where I'll take suggestions. Provide the power supply or just the set of eyes leaving you to connect it as fits your setup. I'm leaning more toward that but we'll see how it goes.

FUN!

from the eye(in) side through the filter - it doesn't go all the way across that's why the ends are brighter but you can see that the bottom left corner light is blocked very well.

From the front, slight blue tint (even with the bad iphone camera) but it's not very bright. I don't know if adding a 4th will make a difference or if I'll have to go to the different LEDs.

I'll be watching this as well.. I kind of was thinking I'd just wait for something like google glass to come out this year, buy the components, wear the headpiece inside the helmet and hide the camera somewhere on the suit lol a true HUD (in one eye)

I should have some updates tonight. I'm working on version 4 - changed the LEDs because the small string I don't think is bright enough. So I took a recommendation and widened the frame so that I have a lot more room. I'm also changing how I'm printing it and putting grooves inside the frame for the lenses and setting space to include a diffuser strip above the lights - hopefully of glow in the dark blue :D. I think it should work out the way I want. I had some difficulty slicing the model last night and had to get to bed so couldn't fix it. I'll do that tonight and print it off and hopefully post some more pictures.

it's getting much closer to having a final frame version. after that it'll be testing which LED's would work best and still keep the price down. Still have to work out the wiring scheme out and how that will work. If you have suggestions please feel free to post them. This is my first time doing something like this so I don't mind advice :D

Not gonna lie, pretty stoked with how it's turning out :)

Thought I'd give you a shot of the model I've been working on the the last couple days. It's printing right now.

Can't wait.

I try to post it here. Hopefully, this time is gonna work.

I've just seen your model and WOW :cool

That's pretty much exactly how I planned them :d there's been some tweaking but everything looks like it's going to work the way I want it too. should have some pictures up in a bit, I'm assembling and testing it now.

I try to post it here. Hopefully, this time is gonna work.

Back to the drawing board. The current design isn't working to reflect the light from the LED's the way I think it needs to so the eyes aren't glowing the way they should. It looks cool and all but not the way it should. There are a couple more things I'll try before I go back to redesigning the frame. I still the concept is sound though.
