Iron Man Research & Resources *Suit Available!*

Edit: Hrm. Any other format that the .pdo file can be converted to? They don't make Pepakura for the Mac.

The original file TK-1536 linked to, is a zip file with the original .OBJ files in it. I use Sketchup on my Mac, along with a few Ruby Plugins ,to import and unfold these files manually. its time consuming, and no where near automatic, but it can be done.
Maybe someone with pep can post the hi-res jpg's with some sort of scale, when they are done.

You can't get your hands on a Windows emulator? Pepakura isn't intensive in the least, you shouldn't have performance issues.

If somebody would like to do the unfolding at a set scale and post them, I can make the pdo files into pdfs and jpgs. I'd unfold too, but I'm a terrible space-waster and usually replace my own unfolds with more efficient ones.

That would be great for all us Mac users who don't want to have to delve into the Ancient mysteries of Windoze :eek !!!

Thanks. :thumbsup

Really, though, being able to scale & unfold the files yourself, not to mention being able to utilize the 3d model view as a building guide, is worth installing an emulator.

I mean, I've got QuickTime. :p

Very true, but I think I'll stick to my trusty Mac OS and work around the lack of Pepakura.

BTW, I Have Windows Media Player, :lol!!

Running an emulator just means you're recreating another platform for some software to run on, it doesn't mean you're actually installing Windows. Running an old game emulator doesn't mean my PC is suddenly a Sega Genesis.

Haha, sorry guys, I'm just in that mood. You know the one, where you're poring over screencaps trying to figure out whether a reflection is implying that an angle is right or just slightly obtuse. :lol

Always Obtuse :wacko!

Seriously though thanks for all your efforts on this, they are most appreciated.

Thats some pretty good work putting those pics together Neon.Man,I could of used you about a month and a half ago.But you know what since I lost my models in my hard drive crash, these will come in really handy ,I'm planing a remodel after I finish up the remaining pieces to my old one.Just wish I had it to fit the other pieces to.But anwho Great job on the ref pics.:thumbsup

No sweat, I contribute where I can since I'm not actively producing props. Now if only Pepakura allowed you to export PDOs as their native file format, eh?

I see you're here as well ;)
I should have callmemilo's full suit unfolded by tomorrow, I'll post it in here and on the LoH forum when I'm done.

This is an excellent thread, soo many excellent references :D

I updated the OP with this info for those who've just started the thread or don't want to skip around for everything, but for the majority of you guys who will probably never revisit the earlier pages I'll just post this normally as well. :)

I was glancing through my reference photos and found a few interesting items, which kicked me back into Massive Info Post Mode so I threw together some more images for you guys.

Shoulder Pistons

The Shoulder Pistons are the silver , erm, pistons connecting the chestplate to the shoulder armor. This is not present on the real suit, and was added in post by ILM. This little montage displays two pictures (top left, top right) from the same photoshoot (same location, same dust, even the same sloppy paint job on the helm) showing the addition. Bottom left is from a display of the suit, showing the non-existent piston, and the bottom right is the ILM model and the piston.

I have no clue why this couldn't have been integrated into the real suit, but I'm sure there was a real reason for it. Or maybe it was an idea after-the-fact, and since the CG suit pipeline was already so integrated into the production, they just ran with it and didn't bother updating the suits. I don't think we'll know till the DVD/Blu-Ray or the Art Of book is released.

7-11 had a cardboard display of Iron Man, before I had done proper research on this thing, so I had no clue whether it was an actual suit or the ILM model. It was gotten rid of before I could nab it, but I did manage to find this pic of it:

No shoulder piston=real suit. I was examining the photo in full res when I suddenly spotted this and got a goofy little grin. Which brings us to:

Rocket Pod Revisited

That's right, though faint, there was definitely a line on the Winston suit to indicate the opening panel for the rocket pod.

This little detail made my day. :D

Mark 2 Finish

The Mark 2 had a very impressive metallic finish, both on the real suit and on the ILM model. However, I found myself distracted by these little bits on the soft armor.

Now, was the metallic film covering the soft armor the same as the hard armor? The finish appears to be the same in every pic I've seen, so it could very well be, but again, this is something that won't be entirely clear until we get the video release with some special features.

the piece you refer too looks like the metallic coating hasnt bonded to that piece of rubber.

Its either a spray on platic finish or printed adhesive wrap

I see you're here as well ;)

:) This is one of the more fascinating Iron Man costume discussions I've seen anywhere, I wouldn't miss it!
Your files were what I had in mind to PDF-itize... would you mind if I convert them to pdf and jpg after you post them?

I know some people will never give in to emulators for their Macs, for whatever reasons they have.

Well, running Windoze on an Intel Mac is just as easy as installing it on a PC. It's getting a legal copy of Windoze that's the problem and $$$.

I've been following all the Iron Man conversations with intent to do something, just not sure when. If I can sculpt and fabricate Clone armor from head to toe in less than a year, I think I can do this.
