1 word. KILLER. :love
Thanks Guy's, I have to keep reminding myself that this was made from Scratch and its not going to be perfect. Its tiresome working on parts that you want perfect, but don't want to do too much and ruin them. So when I feel like that I just stop and start painting. "You don't know what your'e gonna get til' you paint it!" Quote :Blackdynamo1. There are flaws that i have to get past. But on the bright side I say to myself, it adds natural weathering to the suit! Keep Building!....

Re: Iron Man Mark VI - second cardboard build (Upper Armor Preview!)

I know everyone would like info on bondo and sanding. I'm having problems uploading video for Stef and I to collab on a tutorial. Here's something to start with until We can get the footage for u. Its a combo of the mouse & hand sanding. I'm not a pro but I've learned that you have to use 3 or more grades of sandpaper and a few tricks to achieve the look you can be satisfied with. Plus have an eye for round areas and detailing. I use a dremel for details and cutting.

The bondo has to go on as smooth and as thin as you can get it. Layers of bondo have to be applied for high or low spots or strength then feathered in. Don't apply too much be moderate. (try 4no Bubbles!) You can over lap it, but make sure its done with moderate pressure.
Building is the fun part!-sanding is the worst. With the Mouse start with 40-60 grit after bondo to eliminate all roughness of the piece.

It takes a few seconds to smooth any high or low spots with 120-220 and adding details. Primer then use sunlight to check for imperfections. Or you can apply a flash coat of flat black to see. flashing is like scribbling on paper, but on your piece. Depneding on how smooth you get it, add glazing puddy or i use patching plaster in very light, & very thin coats to fill in imperfections and sand with 300 grit wet or dry, primer & then hit it with 600 then primer again (use primer filler)

Patching plaster has to be painted with enamel for it to become strong! so be very carefull not to apply it thick or it will chip or break off its not meant for strength, just finishing. I use it for filling small areas and pin holes. Then after 2-3 light coats of primer I finish by handsanding with 400-600 before i paint. Once you start you'll easily figure out how both are supposed to be used.

P.S. Make sure you follow the directions when applying hardener to bondo! you will have to do it in small batches and it takes time. So Be Patient! Hope this helps - Keep Building!....

First off... Awesome build! Until I actually began working with these materials myself, I never had a FULL appreciation of how much effort goes into a full-suit build.

Secondly, it helps to hear you describe your bondo process like this. It's almost word-for-word what I've been doing - which comforts a first-timer like me! I swear after the sixth time I sanded and touched up Mikey's helmet with finishing glaze/putty only to prime the darn piece and find 'just a couple more places I wanted to touch up'... I felt like I was going insane. :confused

Your work is inspiring and your insight is very helpful!

Thanks!

Hey Delray
any luck uploading the videos?
You need to get on a messenger program of some sorts, so I can help you through any problems. :)

My vacation's over now I can get back to my build. Here's a small update. Nothing real big I added the shoulderbells on the back piece. They're riveted on with 1mm thick vinyl folded to hold them in place. More updates to follow with some soft armor pics tommorow night. Keep Building!....

cool way to attatch the shoulders :)

What parts are going to be your "soft armor"?

Re: Iron Man Mark VI - second cardboard build (Bondo & Sanding Info / Armor Preview!)

Looks great man! That's how I decided I'm attaching my shoulders too. It makes the whole chest assembly like football pads and 10x more convenient to put on. Your armor looks so beautiful and polished, perhaps some day I'll go in and give my suit a face-lift with some bondo...
