Touche'!
I think many forget though on the flip side that PS4 is also a multi-talented system that is capable of a bunch of different things, BUT they don't appear to be advertising it as such.
I think what's great about the XB1 is the options. You don't have to use them, but they are great additions. I don't think we've seen the full potential of the Kinect yet. It's a great way to play some of the games out there and I'll bet they're working on fully integrated Kinect/controller games where you use both as part of the game experience. What's great about having it all to begin with is you won't get nickel and dimed for that technology later when that next great game comes around.
I admit, I do not use my 360 Kinect for most applications, but i'm glad it's there because there are some fun and engaging games that are worth having it for. With the XB1 Kinect being even more advanced i'm looking forward to seeing what software they're going to be developing for it.
^ this. I have a Kinect for the current gen. I only got it because Best Buy had an insane sale price for it before Christmas last year. I've used it all of 5 times. It's in my closet right now sitting on a shelf and will most likely sit there indefinitely unless that killer app we've been waiting for comes out. As for the XB1, if Microsoft decides to sell the console without the Kinect, and drops the price to something comparable to the PS4, then I would definitely consider getting one.
The issue there is how do you know if you'd like the other stuff or not until you try it?
Or put another way - The game console aspect of the machine takes 100% of the resources - or at least it can. Why is it so evil to allow around 10% of the machine to do other stuff when in it's not in game mode?
Why is it wrong that it can act like a DVDR?
You'er not paying extra for the DVDR bit - you're paying extra for the kinect bit. If you don't want to use anything beyond the console, don't, but don't spin it as they put extra hardware in there to do it - they didn't, they're using the existing hardware. Just so happens the existing hardware is an x86/64 bit computer. Why not leverage that ability if you can?
Do you think that if Sony had an already compatible OS that allowed them to do the same things they wouldn't?
The problem with selling a box with a lot of "features" built into it, thus making it a "value" at $500, is that we already have other machines that do all the same stuff. Aside from games, is there really anything at all that the Xbox can do that my current hardware can't? No, there isn't. Suddenly, that "value" isn't quite so valuable.
And actually, CB, you are paying more for DVR... it requires an Xbox Gold membership. That's one thing they've been downplaying quite a bit, always pushing it to the back in interviews or sweeping it under the rug, is that in order to actually do much of anything that they advertise the system can do, requires a monthly subscription fee. Even things like Netflix are behind the paywall. I've got three other devices downstairs that have Netflix built into them, six if you count my PC, phone, and tablet, and not a single one of them charges me extra for the "privilege" of watching Netflix.
I'm sorry, but there is no defending that.. nothing that even the most die-hard Xbox fanboy can say will justify having to pay a monthly subscription fee to Microsoft to watch stuff that I'm already paying Netflix for.
It sounds like people would rather pay $500 for a game system that only plays games vs. $500 toward a game system that does a lot more that you have the choice of utilizing. It's the first i've seen so much whining over getting added value.
I'll bet you just want a cell phone that only makes calls. Screw that GPS, texting, and internet smartphone apps crap, right?
Everyone demonizes this new kinect before they even really know what it's capable of. The Xbox one is a fresh start with new technology and a new kinect. While stuff may not be announced really now, who knows what could happen later.
I heard there's even talk of games that will scan your face and transfer it onto your characters skin. Now that would be wicked.
Why is it wrong that it can act like a DVDR?
Been there done that. Rainbow Six: Vegas does that using the 360 webcam.. it's not all that revolutionary, not really.
I'd wager the number of people who don't buy the xbox1 solely because they can't get it without the kinect piece is an extremely low to negligible number.
If you can afford a 400 luxury item, you can afford a 500 luxury item in all likelihood.
Here's a question - what if the xbox happens to be a much better system? With or without kinect?
