Interesting article on new xbox

Just so you know, PA, it's not your solemn duty to defend Microsoft in this thread. You can counter all you like, but don't expect to change anyone's mind.. those of us who have already decided not to buy one aren't going to suddenly change our minds.

And yes, it IS a stupid name. Ever since the 360 launched, whenever someone was referring to the original Xbox, they called it "Xbox 1" to differentiate it (because no one calls their Xbox360 an Xbox360.. it's just "Xbox"). Just because Microsoft spells this one "One" instead of "1" doesn't make it any less silly. Even their own search engine couldn't tell them apart, they probably had to reprogram Bing to be specifically call out the new system based on the "one" text.

I'm not defending the name - it's certainly not one I'd have gone with - more like taking the **** out of the implication that since they've backpedaled on so much of their initial plans they should just change the name at the 11th hour as well. Should have been clearer about my snark :)

I agree there. I just think they should have named it something else from the start. They're in the awkward position of being a version behind compared to Playstation. That's why they didn't name it "Xbox 2", because it would have looked shoddy next to the Playstation 3. Same thing here with Xbox 3 next to Playstation 4. Before the announcement, my money was on Xbox Infinity, which still fits in with their "it does everything" idea.

These names seem to be 'in' at the moment. Htc one. The new ipad. Its all one or no number at all. As though its best and no need to be a sequel etc. Kinda screws them up for the next one though. Xbox one.... mark 2? The new...... new ipad?

Or borrowed one from Nintendo - Xbox Revolution. As stupid as it sounds: "Xbox Carrot", it is sadly still better than "Xbox One"

Well Microsoft sure seems to want to be Apple lately, which given how stagnant Apple is when it comes to innovations at this point in time seems like a bad idea. I never figured they'd change the name of the system but i would like to have seen the other choices. I bet they listened to a focus group of hipsters.

Honestly. Whats wrong with numeric counting. Its universal. And the kids dont get confused. ..

It sure seems the way of the world now. Reflecting on mistakes i've made in the past I can say we're all so quick to judge before just giving it a go and then forming an opinion. We look at things on the surface and names and just instantly give it a bad rep.

They managed to reprogram the Kinect and use it for PC's.... "if there's a will there's a way" :p

Using an exploit yes. That doesnt enable the kinect to change its behaviour with the xbox. Pcs can run unsigned code if the administrator account allows. Its not just like clicking accept with an xbox. You will notice that the kinect was reprogrammed to work with a pc. But no one changed its behaviour with the xbox. Thats because theyre completley different things. Why do you think no one did it? Not just a case of being a talented programmer. I assure you.

Even if found. Unsigned software running on the xbox is frowned upon by ms. As it paves the way for running backup games. And I would think would lead to bans. Im not saying it isnt possible. But definitley not just being a talented programmer no way.

Side note...
I think since jtagging that no ones run unsigned code on the xbox itself. Just altered dvd drive firmware. Which wouldnt help the kinect communicating with the xbox. So I doubt it will happen unless ms want it to.

They, uh... They're advertising the fact that you can pause a game. Also,

And it will cost them customers who have no use for it. They need to face it, it was basically a flop for nearly every game it was part of in xbox 360. I actually have seen them at fleamarkets for sale.

People harp on the kinect because of what was done on the 360 but to be honest, they're talking out of their ass when it comes to it failing on the Xbox One. For all we know there could be some really crazy uses for it in future games.

I'm buying my Xbox one and the chances are very high that I'll never use the kinect but whatever, at least I have it. Then if some cool **** comes out, then I don't have to go and buy one.

That, I think, is what they're counting on. I suspect a big part of why the Kinect didn't take off was that there wasn't enough of a userbase to warrant the development of GOOD games that'd take advantage of it. Instead you got these sort of gimmicky boring games or Wii clones. If the userbase isn't there, people won't develop for the peripheral itself. It's the same reason why there are only, like, 3-4 games that are actually designed to work with the Ace Edge HOTAS setup (and two of them are Ace Combat games anyway). Why spend development dollars on a peripheral that only a small percentage of the market has?

My sense is that MS really believes in the potential of Kinect, but recognizes that the potential won't be realized unless the userbase expands in a big way. Thus, the insistence upon including it. I think they believe that, if everyone has one, and developers make games and other programs that take advantage of it, that people will come to actually like it. But as long as it's just a neat little gimmick and a chance for people to pretend they're Jean Luc Picard ("Xbox! Engage!"), that's all it'll ever be.

As for the name, I still think "One" was a mistake, and it should've been something like "Home" or "Center" or whatever, but in the end, it'll be the product itself that'll make the biggest difference.
