Interesting article on new xbox

I pre-ordered my system yesterday from EB Games. I'm gonna be paying full attention to what MS announces and to be honest, despite their ego, I can see them dropping the online checks and MAYBE changing their used game policy once they release the system and Sony kills them in numbers. I've been an Xbox gamer since 2002 and will always play my Xbox over my PS3. I own something like 60 360 games and I think like 7 PS3 games. That being said, Sony totally kicked their ass during E3 and their reveals. Microsoft would have to be incredibly daft to continue with their check and used policies. That's why I figure if not before the release, then eventually afterwards they will change it.

I'll be buying both systems regardless. I'll just be buying my Xbox One first.

Ditto, though the other way around for me. I did have my 360 before my PS3 and I literally only use the PS3 for blurays. I'm hoping they do end up dropping the used game policy.

This. And it's been this way since at least the mid-90s. License agreements are nothing new and arbitration clauses are nothing controversial. I put 'em into contracts all the time. There's plenty of stuff to complain about with the XBoxOne, but this ain't something that's really worth getting up in arms over.

Seriously? Sheesh. I mean, that's what I'm doing anyway. I'm just so NOT in a rush to adopt either console yet.



I would hope that there's at least SOME kind of offline mode to use. Have they confirmed this yet? I find it hard to believe there'd be nothing. Even Steam lets you play games offline if you want.
 
I hate Microsoft and can't believe their arrogant high-handed policies. I plan to punish them by buying their product and signing up for their services.

I agree. But its the way the world works. People complain. But are scared of doing themselves out of anything. So will buy regardless. Fat cats will get fatter.

I think MS has relied on the loyalty thing too much and now it may backfire. But not if people buy their stuff even though theyre unhappy with it.

I wont be spending that amount on 2 consoles this time. I hardly used my ps3 because we all had xbox. I didnt really care which I played on to be honest. The only shame is not being able to play halo 5 or ryse.

MS has lost my vote. We can only hope they dont sell too well which will make them take a long hard look at where they would be without us all. And see theyve mistreated us.

All this being said. I dont spite for making a mistake. If ms correct it ill be more then happy to consider them again.

There are NO play mechanics from the original. It looks like a mortal kombat clone with the KI name... Lame.

Oh yes. At least it is these days; I'm sure the mindset has always existed but to me it seems more prevalent lately. I can't imagine my granddad going back and repeatedly buying a product he was offended by. Then again he stayed married to my grandma the dragon lady... :lol

I mean when the Star Wars DVDs came out there were all kinds of complaints. I and a few likeminded sorts read the reviews and said 'no thanks'. People right here were unable to process it and basically said 'no way, you'll be out there like everyone else buying them on day one'. But here we are however many years on and my only copies of Star Wars are still the final unmolested letterbox release on VHS.

If I don't like a product, I don't buy it. It's really simple...

Most people will get that, others either won't hear the news or will refuse to believe. Right up to and after point of sale.

Pity the complaints department at MS. Just separating legit faults from "it says I need teh Intarwebs! Why I need teh Intarwebs??!" will keep them busy...
 
I'll only be getting the Xbox. I have no problem with the Kinect in all the time or online checks. I'd be even happier if it went like steam so all games were downloaded. I like the fact its also a media center, I'm fed up with my ATV being limited.

Also, do you think its luck that the last 2 MS consoles were easily hacked? It sells consoles ;) :p

You and I have vastly differing opinions of easy :lol The wii on the other hand, that thing was a snap to softmod. I don't think there's an equivalent on 360 yet.

Yep. that was my experience with the blurays. I didn't buy 'em. I won't buy 'em. They aren't anything that I want, so why spend the money?

That said, I remain on the fence abuot the XboxOne. My leaning right now is "Nah. I'll pass." But that could change, depending on whether I get to use it and/or see its potential. The kinect COULD be cool. it has a ton of potential. But nobody's designing for it currently.

I think you may be missing a few points. Asides from the principal, You remember when Sony was hacked? Down for 2 weeks! Well we will see if you mind online checks if they ever have a server meltdown and your console becomes a useless brick.

I don't think it'll replace my smart tv so I wouldn't use those features. Plus that's a perk. I wanna buy a 'games console'. Extras are fine as long as the console satisfies me.

I really see MS reevaluating the situation after 6 or more months of dismal sales, and re-releasing XBOX-1 as XBOX-1.1 with changes made to correct the major issues people have problems with, like the need to constantly connect, sharing games, physical games...ect. Then again, it's a gamble, and they might just say screw it and wait for XBOX-2 or something and make you pay $600 to correct the issues.
 
I got MS not doing anything and keeping on selling to the hipsters and kids too brainwashed to know that they're being screwed over.

In fairness, I think that's more of an individual decision. It may be getting screwed over to you, but other people may not see it that way. I mean, I get that you find it HIGHLY objectionable that you cannot transfer your games to someone else (or at least, can't do so easily). But what about people who never buy used games, never trade games, and never bring games to each others' houses and such? For them, the "no used games" thing (which isn't even as clear-cut as that) is no big deal. Same goes for someone who always has their console hooked into the internet.

I mean, right now, my X360 is "always on" in terms of the internet connection. I power it up, it signs me in to XBL. The only times it doesn't do that are in the VERY rare occasions where something screwy is happening with my router, or where XBL's own servers are taken down for maintenance or whatever. If you're someone who has a pretty consistent connection, then again, these issues aren't really that objectionable.


What I think the REAL killer is, though, is that the exclusive titles may not be that impressive, and that the device is $100 more than a PS4 for basically a voice command bar (unless people start developing actual GOOD games that use the Kinect). The price point on the XB1 is the most confusing part for me. $500 is REALLY high for a console. I remember when the PS3 and X360 came out, part of why I went with the 360 was because it was around $100 cheaper than the PS3. I expect that alone will drive a lot of people to Sony. Because, in the end, is yet another Halo or Dead Rising game REALLY going to be worth the extra $100? Or the use of a Kinect that you don't really use for anything other than pretending your Captain Picard? "Xbox.....ENGAGE!"
 
Oh i agree i just find it scary how willing folks are to pay for a machine that can be hacked to spy on you. Between the price, useless crap, and their arrogant elitist attitude it's easy for me to choose. Actually the only reason I even own any blurays is because my ps3 came with the player. Otherwise i wouldn't even update to that. My ps3 and 360 are always on but again their attitude towards folks who don't have access (military in deployment) and rural folks is a major turn off and reminds me of the Apple fanboys in the 90s bashing anyone who couldn't afford an Apple computer.
 
Oh, sure, it's absolutely a turn-off. But that's more about brand identity than anything else, and living in the Softie bubble of the high-tech pacific northwest.

And as far as the monitoring goes...again, that's no different from the 360. MS can probably tell how much time you spend in this or that app or game, target their XBL ads accordingly, and such. They can tell the IP address from which you log in. If you haev a Gold account, they've probably got your credit card on file. And, of course, any of the apps you use are also tracked by whoever made 'em in the first place. So, Netflix knows what you're watching, and knows you watched it on your X360. If you already have a Kinect hooked up, the risk of being monitored already exists. For that matter, it's no different from having a webcam with a built-in mic hooked to your computer. you have no idea who might be listening in or watching you. Now, I'm not saying that any of this ACTUALLY happens. I don't know that it does or doesn't. What I'm saying, though, is that the potential for misuse hasn't really changed. It's the same as it's been before the XboxOne.

None of that, of course, mitigates MS' abysmal PR this time around. The air of disdain and ignoring customer concerns is, I think, what's most rubbing folks the wrong way. The customers have expressed concern and dislike of the announced changes. The responses have basically boiled down to "So? Suck it up and deal." Instead, similar to Peter Molyneux's comments, they could've talked about the advantages of an always-on system or the convenience of downloadable games or whathaveyou. But the pitch seems to have been more about treating users as potential pirates rather than valued customers.
 
The news on the european news channel was talking about the new xbox and how it could end up used to spy on you.
