Whats more. Ill probably enjoy the xbox one as if its true I will most likely buy.

Well now. That was...abrupt.

But on the whole, I think it's a good thing.

That said, the always-on/streaming/DRM stuff will happen eventually. It's clear they WANTED to do it that way. Or at least someone wanted them to. In my line of work, I deal with government administrative offices. Frequently, they'll release some new rule change which is extremely poorly thought out and wildly unpopular. They'll catch flak, then withdraw the rule.....only to reinstate it some 3 years later when nobody seems to mind. So, while this is certainly a good thing for fans of Xbox, I think the writing is on the wall when it comes to streaming/DRM. Thing is, the infrastructure AND the benefit isn't there yet.

On the whole, though, if MS can do this and still maintain a lot of the more interesting media center potential of the console, it could be a win/win for gamers.

I'm still not buying either console yet, though. Not until there's more field test work done. :)

This doesn't surprise me at all. It's like I've been saying for a while, it was simply a matter of time before they changed their policies due to backlash. In my time as a gamer, I don't think I've ever seen this much negative press towards a gaming console. I'd say the only thing that surprised me was just how quickly they changed their policy. I was definitely expecting a down the road change, not immediately.

As for the Kinect, I'd say that's hardly an issue at this point. The once every 24 hour check was everyone's major concern. The tin foil hats can just cover the camera.

I was unsure from the Xbox post but did they also state that the region lock was disable as well? They mentioned that you could take your Xbox anywhere but didn't outright say "region free"

Without geting into the whole enraged thing(I assure you believe it or not. Was with people thinking they knew how I felt and assuming I think ms should do what I say. Rather then my initial disbelief that they thought it was a good decision. If you look through the posts you will see the rage grow as the conversation furthers. Or take my word for it. As theres a lot to read)

This may not be anything to do with the console but here.

How many people have said just vote with your wallet. Dont complain you will waste your time. You may as well talk to a brick wall.
If people didnt complain. Would ms be making this decision?

One post definitley said region lock dropped.

I always figured peoples main gripe was selling to friends ebay etc.

Last week at E3, the excitement, creativity and future of our industry was on display for a global audience.

For us, the future comes in the form of Xbox One, a system designed to be the best place to play games this year and for many years to come. As is our heritage with Xbox, we designed a system that could take full advantage of advances in technology in order to deliver a breakthrough in game play and entertainment. We imagined a new set of benefits such as easier roaming, family sharing, and new ways to try and buy games. We believe in the benefits of a connected, digital future.

Since unveiling our plans for Xbox One, my team and I have heard directly from many of you, read your comments and listened to your feedback. I would like to take the opportunity today to thank you for your assistance in helping us to reshape the future of Xbox One.

You told us how much you loved the flexibility you have today with games delivered on disc. The ability to lend, share, and resell these games at your discretion is of incredible importance to you. Also important to you is the freedom to play offline, for any length of time, anywhere in the world.

So, today I am announcing the following changes to Xbox One and how you can play, share, lend, and resell your games exactly as you do today on Xbox 360. Here is what that means:

An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games – After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc based game without ever connecting online again. There is no 24 hour connection requirement and you can take your Xbox One anywhere you want and play your games, just like on Xbox 360.

Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today – There will be no limitations to using and sharing games, it will work just as it does today on Xbox 360.

There goes half your list. The mandatory Kinect isn't a problem, just think of it as part of the console. If it was built in to the unit itself no-one would complain.

I also don't believe there's an issue with the Camera/Mic. In standby, all they have said is a voice command can turn it on, no mention of the camera.

The option of connecting your cable box is also awesome, it will lead the way to PIP when playing games.

I welcome and all in 1 system, I have a 360, PS3 and Apple TV. Non of which cover the whole spectrum, the only thing thats come close is having XBMC on a RPi but I can't play games on that.

And for those worried about the Camer/Mic:

You are in control of what Kinect can see and hear: By design, you will determine how responsive and personalized your Xbox One is to you and your family during setup. The system will navigate you through key privacy options, like automatic or manual sign in, privacy settings, and clear notifications about how data is used. When Xbox One is on and you’re simply having a conversation in your living room, your conversation is not being recorded or uploaded.

You are in control of when Kinect sensing is On, Off or Paused: If you don’t want the Kinect sensor on while playing games or enjoying your entertainment, you can pause Kinect. To turn off your Xbox One, just say “Xbox Off.” When the system is off, it’s only listening for the single voice command -- “Xbox On,” and you can even turn that feature off too. Some apps and games may require Kinect functionality to operate, so you’ll need to turn it back on for these experiences.

You are in control of your personal data: You can play games or enjoy applications that use data, such as videos, photos, facial expressions, heart rate and more, but this data will not leave your Xbox One without your explicit permission. Here are a few examples of potential future scenarios:

A fitness game could measure heart rate data to provide you with improved feedback on your workout, allow you to track your progress, or even measure calories burned.
A card game could allow you to bluff your virtual opponent using your facial expressions.

the everything always on concept will come, but the world is not ready for it, not until we have crazy insane warp speed wi-fi everywhere will something like this be feasible. happy to see xbox starting to take a few steps back. i understand there stance, the we want to be first, we are the future blah blah blah, dosnt make it a good idea, for now anyways.

with the kinect i will just point the stupid thing at my card board people, that thing can look at the hobbits and vader for all i care ;)

That was already posted Wes........

According to IGN's system features chart, the system is still region locked.

Yeah according to yahoo even the always on internet is up to be axed. Microsoft reverses ?always-on? internet, used game policies for Xbox One | Games Blog - Yahoo! Games Still not happy about the camera/mic/kinnect thing.

Really cant see them going back with that. Perhaps an option rather then requirement. It doesnt bother me but is a factor for many. But for a future with things you can turn on by talking to them. I guess theres nothing can be done.

And whilst ill never want to accept cloud computing. Due to someone else being trusted with my data. And data protection with the USA and their rights to demand to view data without letting me know. It'll probably happen. Its not the same as gaming over the cloud but they are coming together hand In hand.
The only gaming drawback being accessibility. Which is a minor concern.

So, do we call it the Xbox 180 now? At minimum, it will probably be at least a couple of years before I consider getting one. XBL Gold is still required to stream or do anything else for that matter. And the indie developer situation and region lock still stands at least for now. I can't justify spending well over $600 (console, game, extra controller) for it at this time. It would be even more if I didn't already have XBL Gold and it being transferable to the next gen.

This is pure damage control on Microsoft's part because if they thought they could get away with it, they would have. Don Mattrick shoved his shoe in his mouth and is desperately trying to get it out. Gamers will always be the core audience and purchasers of these systems despite Microsoft trying to open up to a bigger demographic. Hopefully, they have finally understood that with this dramatic reversal on things.

However, considering the overwhelming preorder numbers in favor of Sony at the moment, will it sway people to switch over because of all the damage that was done initially? I, for one, have not been swayed.

Actually, I think they could have done it 'their way' had they orchestrated a roll out that had semblance of, you know, competence. Replying flippantly to people concerns and essentially saying 'sucks to be you' to a number of people is what put them in the corner they're in now.

It's marketing 101, sell the virtues/positives of what your selling. They chose to somehow highlight everything people won't like. The whole PR department should be dumped. Just a horrific job.

The system is already prepped for this to happen. I'll bet you a million bucks they will enact it in less than 2 years. Then what?? Who ever has one already will have no choice because they have everything already set up. You will see bricked Xbox ones in a couple years because they WILL change their policies. IT'S A TRAP!! Mark my words..

Be interesting to see if they put this across as a good thing. That although they dropped the ball. Theyre showing they listen to the customers etc.

I dont think there is many positives for limiting peoples experience. Sure say how cloud computing is the future. But that doesnt reason for a connection REQUIREMENT. Id leave it to choice. Why not.
Whats the positive on limiting games lending etc? I doubt they could have made it all appealing regardless. The positives werent that positive to start with

Whatever happened to that eye rolling emoticon...:facepalm

"OMG they gave us the good news, must find way to spin negatively. Why? Because I am the internet!"

I just can't see it happening. Look at what happened today. They announce all this crap at the unveiling and a month later dump everything. I can guarantee if they changed their policies, especially with the always online, GameStop will see an incredible surge of Xbox one trade ins. Like solo, I can see it all happening eventually, but maybe not this gen.

Funny how Microsoft’s Major Nelson said the following just a couple of days ago: "I don’t think,… I mean we’re really not going to change anything we’ve done with Xbox One. We’re very happy. [...] It’s safe to say that we’re confident where we’re going. We’re also confident that gamers are going to love our vision of the future and what we’re going to offer for gaming.”

Wonder how long it will take for the die hard xBox fanboys to swollow the news, regroup and start bashing the PS4. It has happened in this thread occasionally, but those were tiny disputes, now let's get to the good old full on console war again... :lol

Personally I'm still happy with my 2007 PS3 and will most likely get a PS4 at some point in the future (not in a hurry though), but since the consumer always (or at least in most cases) benefits from competition, I never saw the point in bashing another system.

Secondly, everything I've seen from PS4 looks like it's a souped up version of what I've already seen. Nothing really stood out to me as particularly new or interesting about it, beyond that it went back to the well with a big middle finger to microsoft by adhering to what we perceive as traditional methods with discs. That certainly got everyone excited, but it was excitement about NO CHANGE.
I'd say change makes sense for most consumers if they feel it's a change for the better and obviously a lot thought that MS's way was a change for the worse.

Frankly, I'm astounded that MS actually bowed to this.. that's totally unlike them.

Does Don Mattrick still work there? lol

Gee for only off putting ten percent, they sure changed their minds fast. Who saw this coming? (Raises hand)
