Interesting article on new xbox

What does Sony and Microsoft have to do with used games anyways. They don't produce them do they?

They get money from the game companies for each game sold as part of the licensing deal to allow the games to be used on the systems. The game companies and console companies hate the used game market because they lose cash as they're not making anything off it. I think in japan it wasn't legal for a while to sell or trade games, at least i think i read that somewhere back in the 90s. The movie studios hate the used market too as does the music industry. They all feel that it's a legalized form of piracy and have been trying to find ways to stop it for decades.

Hasbro and action figure companies hate the used figure and custom figure stuff too and have been getting pissy about custom figures on sale on ebay lately even if it's a character that people want and never was officially produced. Hasbro is good at this for 3rd party transformers figures as they sell more than hasbro does.

Yeah, it's the reason console games are more expensive than their PC counterparts.

For example, for ubisoft to make a game for the PS3 or Xbox, they have to pay a royalty or licensing fee to Microsoft for each game sold.

Worse yet is companies like nintendo. The reason they don't use a standard cd/dvd/ or blue ray for game content is because they patent their 'version' of it and you have to a pay them to use their media and pay them to make a game for the console - in effect - double dipping.

A problem I see with a constant internet connection - even for single player non internet necessary games - is that a lot of Europe has metered internet connections. You pay for what you use. You shouldn't have to pay a cent for internet usage for a game that doesn't require it for game play - i.e. multiplayer. On top of that, there are providers here that would like to do the same thing and have even established test markets for it.

Not anymore. Your pricing herpes have infected PC game pricing now. :lol ;)

Around 5 years ago a PC game would be $39.99 vs. .a console game at $49.99. When console games went up to $59.99 then PC games went to the same price.

The Kinect idea actually has me more worried than the used-game theory (which did not show up at all in the latest "leak"). I keep thinking back to a patent that Microsoft has that allows them to use the Kinect's camera to count the number of people watching pay-per-view or rental content, to make sure they're getting their money's worth out of you. Which means they're turning that camera on when you didn't ask them to.

And now they say the Kinect always has to be on, for everything, whether it's a Kinect game or not? Sounds like this is what they're headed toward. I have a feeling it would throw an error if you tried to cover it or block its vision in any way. I'm gonna be really pissed if Sony does something similar with the PS Eye, although there's no indication that the Eye will be packed in every box like the Kinect will.

As much as MS has been pushing worthless Kinect dancing titles as "the future of gaming", it almost makes me wonder if they're going an entirely different direction than Sony this time.

Makes sense. Thanks for the clarification.

Sadly i thought i was being paranoid about them using the Kinect to snoop but you actually make valid points. It also makes me think that they'll demand all games have kinect features. If sony does this crap too with the ps4 the industry is going to collapse as people will stop buying it. In 1983 the game industry collapse was from a flooded market of crap games nobody wanted and now they're repeating it with consoles.
Who knows the Wii U might come out the winner.:lol

Still just conjecture. The install idea appears to be based on hardware limitations, that they're not dedicating any hardware to high throughput from the Blu-ray drive, which limits the amount of real-time streaming you can do from it. The Xbox360 also allows installs of games (but does not require them), it's highly advantageous. The rumors about an activation code would be where the used game nuts can focus, but that has nothing to do with installing to the hard drive.

I'm believing nothing until I hear it from official channels. Which won't happen during the announcement, no more than it did during PS4's announcement.

Going back to what I was saying earlier about Kinect, the new info on VGLeaks does support that the Kinect will be required for the system to function. And now we know that the PS4 will also include their new PSEyeWhatever in the box, but there's not yet any indication that it will be required. Call me paranoid, but I unplug my PSEye unless I'm playing a game that actually uses it.

I have no doubt they're going to pull the code and always online BS. i mean my xbox is always hooked to the net as it is but it ruffles my feathers that these morons in suits who know nothing of the game industry other than it's making them rich try to tell us how to use a product we bought. When i was in school my one teacher worked for a game company in latrobe PA and he said the guys running the place admitted they had no clue about games but knew it was pure money.

If one had to install EVERY game they bought on the new Xbox hard drive, it would definitely have to be a minimum 1TB if not more. Even at 1TB, that's maybe 30-40 games at the most especially if they're going to be Blu-ray. And that doesn't include updates, DLC's or anything from the marketplace. Unless, Microsoft is thinking of selling externals for who knows how much.

This is the same thing we went through with the PS4. Wait until Microsoft OFFICALLY details their new system - anything other than offical announcements is guesses.

Microsoft in general is exceptionally bad about this. I'm tired of being told what I should or shouldn't like. Windows 8 is the greatest operating system ever made because MS says it is. Kinect is the future of gaming because MS says it is.

They need to start listening to what their customers actually want instead of telling them what they want. Believe me, if they actually try to pull off this no-used-games thing, they'll find some way to spin it around to make it sound like it's making the world a better place for all of us gamers. And certain fans of all things Microsoft will drink it right up with the rest of the Kool-Aid.

They could always push this cloud nonsense everyone is always talking about. I guess i'm finally getting too old for gaming lol.

If a kinect camera is required and can be turned on at any time, I am going to cover up the lense with duct tape, lol.

Next-generation Xbox reportedly requires Internet connection just to play games
Look at that now supposedly it won't even start up without a connection. They're sure alienating a lot of gamers by not even coming out and crushing the rumors. This is going to be a massive flop if they're true as there is a massive amount of people out there with crap net connections. Hell Live keeps disconnecting me constantly anymore and my net never goes off. Hopefully someone comes up with a hack so these things run off line.

What an idiot! Way to insult 50 percent of you your customers with his "why would I live there" comment. i have a feeling hell be getting a nice little call from the PR people. So i guess in 10 years, when they no nongler suppoert the nextbox and shut off the servers, it will be rendered compleatly usless. It's become more and more likely that I will not be touching this thing with 10 foot pole.

I'm hoping these rumors are true but short of after the support dies hackers make it run offline for retro gamers it's just going to be landfill. Meanwhile i'll be playing my SNES lol
And on that note the PS2 is still selling like mad on amazon despite it no longer being supported.
