Interest thread - 1/72 Naboo Starship

I am very interested pending price.
I have been working on some CAD drawings for this ship for a little while now and preparing to make my own. But it wasn't going to as big as this one!

I did some work on this tonight.

Re: Interest thread

I always love your WIP shots. I'm fascinated to see how you conceptualize the build from scratch and then realize the model each step of the way.

Like Ostrich, I'm interested to know whether the engine bells will be separate and, if not, why you decided to go that way.

Another awesome project, REL. Thanks for keeping us informed! :thumbsup

:eek HOLY SMOKES!!!:eek

You're the fastest modeler I believe I have ever witnessed!

First the TOS BOP takes you only a week from thought to casting,... now this!

DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUDE!!!!:love :thumbsup :thumbsup

Re: Interest thread

Some work!?! That is some fast work. Are you sure you don't have a sweat shop somewhere cranking these masters out?

Re: Interest thread

Thank you. I read in Sculpting a Galaxy that they used chrome mylar sheets to do the chrome, I'm going to try that out on the Estes rocket I bought on ebay and see how it works. But I'm starting to have second thoughts on this ship, I'm not getting a lot of interest in it in emails etc so it might end up being a dud so I'm thinking of shelving it.

I would make the Ep II version if I had more reference on it, that seems to be a more popular one.

Re: Interest thread

Well anyway, here's how I made the parts for this. The engines and engine parts were turned on a lathe. The main engine was split in half, the block of wood was glued together from two blocks of poplar with a piece of paper in between so it could be split apart later. The main body was filled in with 2 part 3lb rigid foam.

After foaming it in it was covered in bondo and the rest is history. I use sparse cross sections to leave room for final shaping, I find using too many cross sections get in the way. After the final shaping is done I'll put a layer of fiberglass over the bondo so I have a hard surface to do the panel scribe lines.

Re: Interest thread

Thanks for the breakdown on how you make your masters. Unfortunately, I know your showing the easy part. Do you sand it down by hand for the rest or do you use another means to get the final shape.

Well, I for one hope that you finish it - as I want one.
As much as I love collecting Trek models, Star wars is still my favorite. I think there is a lack of nice looking, decent priced large-scale Star wars ships.
I would love this version, and the ones from Ep. 2 & 3 to go with it. But this one holds a special place for me, as it's role in the movie was much more important (and longer :) ).
Not that I am also not looking forward to an Ent. D and Voyager (my favorite) models from you, but I hope to get this firrst. :) Either way thanks for all the great work.

Re: Interest thread

Thanks. I want one myself so I'm going to go ahead and finish it.

I did some sanding, I still need to refine it a little more.

No, don't say that.

Have you looked at the Prequel chronicals book? It has all the angles of the Ep 2 ship.

Re: Interest thread

Your process is fascinating. I love how you turned the engines on a lathe with a piece of paper between the wood pieces so that they could be split apart and fit to the frame you had constructed. :eek :thumbsup

Generally speaking, how many orders do you figure you need to make a production run of this kit worthwhile for you?

I'm certainly interested, although still unsure how I'd go about getting the thing chromed. It turns out that the "miracle paint" I mentioned earlier in the thread (in connection with the MiB gun) is not the ideal finish for this model after all. :unsure

Did you enable your PMs since the update? I just realized mine were off myself, when trying to PM you (did you get it btw?), to say "I'm interested"; put me on your list :thumbsup.
