I love it. Mel has moved on past this non-comment and we STILL have white-knights coming to her "defense".

You cannot write this stuff, Brad!

Truthfully, I dont think this has anything to do with the 'white Knight' issue.

For me its much more about trying to understand why rudeness is tollerated, or worse, accepted.

I still am unsure what Jedifyfe means by 'dumb post'. What was dumb about it?

Some had seen it before, some hadnt. lets say the majority had seen it, I am still unsure as to why it is considered 'dumb post'.

Im being dead serious here. can someone explain this without being rude or sarcastic?

As it is in all things, one's man's trash is another man's treasure. One person sees rudeness, another sees good-natured ribbing. Who's right? Both. Neither.

Because have a relatively functioning search feature. It can link you to hundreds upon hundreds of posts on various topics that have been known about for almost as long as this board has been around. All it takes is a little bit of diligence in looking up the topic you are about to post. Then you can go necro the tread the topic was in. Hell, there are newbies necroing topics to this day using the search feature.

Now, I do not recall seeing Fyfe say Mel's post was a "dumb post". He commented that it was a well known fact among RPFers that there are R2/3PO hieroglyphs in the Well of the Souls. Hell, I first found out about it HERE.

Now, why are other newbies, like yourself, coming to the defense of someone who has frankly gotten the joke and has since moved on?

Once upon a time, Manjusri, the Bodhisattva of Wisdom, went to an assemblage of Buddhas. By the time he arrived, all had departed except for the Buddha Sakyamuni and one girl. She was seated in a place of highest honor, deep in meditation. Manjusri asked the Buddha how it was possible for a mere girl to attain a depth of mediation that even he could not attain. The Buddha said, "Bring her out of meditation and ask her yourself."

So Manjusri walked around the girl three times (a gesture of reverence), then snapped his fingers. She remained deep in meditation. He then tried rousing her by invoking all his magic powers; he even transported her to a high heaven. All was to no avail, so deep was her concentration. But suddenly, up from below the earth sprang Momyo, an unenlightened one. He snapped his fingers once, and the girl came out of her meditation.

Is it not this type of 'confusion' that the emoticon was made for?

'You are just finding this out? This has been known for about 25 years. You do know that there are other forums than the OT, right? '

is very very different to...

'You are just finding this out? This has been known for about 25 years. You do know that there are other forums than the OT, right?' :lol

Both are sarchastic, but one in a much more friendly way. Surely you can see that?

He did. Something like 'a dumb post is a dumb post'

The problem is, she didnt get the joke and move on. It seemed pretty obvious to me that she was forced to appologise in order to keep 'in' with people. That is a shame IMO.

Lastly, I am unsure why post count/newbie status matters with regard to anything.

No, he didn't. He didn't say that about Mel's post specifically; it was a general observation.

It's a pretty good indicator of how familiar one is with the community. How likely one is going to respond to good-natured ribbing without emoticons, for example.

Do you honestly think she was coerced into just sucking it up? I don't. I think she sees the way this place works and wanted to roll with it. We all have bad days when we take things out of context.

I'm not sure why newness matters either, but it does. I don't make the rules. We have always welcomed newbies and to my recollection, the ones who are the most prolific posters out of the gate get burned out on this place and fade away. I see it as us older people trying to guide you newer folks. "Slow down, drink it in. You don't have to participate in every topic. Let people get to know you." Then, after your rookieness has worn off, you can jump in and Fyfe a few people.

As to the emoticons being needed to detect sarcasm...well, a safer bet would be to assume most things that READ as someone being a sarcastic git...usually are sarcasm.

Roughly speaking, how many more posts will I need before I am able to convince myself that rude, sarchastic and bullying posts and in fact friendly, good natured, and all part of the rpf experience??

You know...just as a guide...

Weequay, If you read through the entire thread you would see that I stated, it wasn't about the fact that some people haven't seen it, it was the fact that the original poster NEVER has gone on to any other parts of the forum long enough to see that this topic has been covered MANY TIMES OVER. There was even someone selling castings of this in the Junkyard. The "rudeness" was sarcasm and if you can't tell the difference, well then that's your problem not mine.

There was NO rudeness until the OP called me a "Jerk". I never once called her a name or said she was stupid. She attacked my family and I never said one word about her personally.

Agan, if you don't like the way that this board is...LEAVE!

:lol Good one! Go get that guy! :thumbsup

Yes Martyn, sometimes you have to ignore the little typos and focus on the bigger pick-chur. We are rookie abusers!

(Am I doing it right?)
