Immortan Joe costume from Mad Max, Fury Road

Yellow Ochre paint is just a color of acrylic. It's kind of a natural brownish yellow, rather than a "mustard/flower" yellow. The kind that "Ye Old Masters" would have used. Any painters acylic brand will have it.

I sanded it with the sanding sponge and if you get a light grit you can really control how transparent you want to make it. I just used regular tube acrylic (Golden Brand) with only a tiny amount of water. Too much water and it doesn't stick well. If you put too much on, you can just sand the paint off and repaint.

i can second the complexity of this costume. This is the most complicated, expensive, and time consuming costume I've ever made. I've spent the last two days just working on the boots and leather greaves.

Aeon, If it were me, I'd get a sheet of 3M pad:

It's so fine you'll end up with a cloudy surface without visible scratches. I'd do it to the inside only to keep it glossy on the faces.

For folks who are doing costumes for Halloween and rather not deal with the horror of the clear front/back armor, I'll be doing sculpts and vacforms of PETG, best suitable to a medium-large guy. Meaning, a bit too big for nux and probably a bit snug on HKB. They won't be finished until early October, however. I might start a new thread to document progress and organize all the costume info gathered sofar into a few easy to reference posts.

EDIT: also doing bellows out of urethane rubber - soft but non functioning!

If you end up doing a run off the bellows Logan, I'd certainly be interested! I keep putting them on the back burner, dreading to start them. lol

*Edit* Been looking at some HD screenshots of the Immortan now that Fury Road is available for digital download.

I noticed a few things about how drastic his makeup changes between his first scene in the citadel and the later scenes during the pursuit. His makeup is a much heavier caked on white, While the makeup is much more subdued later in the film (makes a lot of realistic sense that he would sweat much of the makeup off).

Another big thing missing later in the film is all of the boils and scar tissue on his back/and upper arms. Does anyone plan on doing the boils and nasty skin under their armor? I was think a bit of liquid latex stippled and "rolled" on the skin when it dries may give a bit of the effect. Though I wonder how well it would even translate under the armor? Not to mention we'll already probably be sweating to death in the armor, so a little latex on your skin is going to be even more uncomfortable.

wow, awesome! thanks so much, I'll order a carton ASAP!

my mask from Logan arrived today, and holy crap does this thing look great! decided to do a makeup / mask / wig test run, pretty happy with the results!

Lookin good! What sort of wig did you end up with?

On my end, these things came in today from the UK. I love the models Ein is doing, but in my OCD quest for authenticity I had to buy the cheapie real ones. Plus I hate the inevitable sanding of build lines from printed models. They're actually made of metal, which was surprising. Couldn't handle paying 45 bucks for a 1.50 order so I got a handful of em. If anybody is interested PM me and I'll send one out at cost.

Eriks,

I am going to wear a too-small white tee shirt under the armor which has been died his pinky flesh color and then airbrushed to resemble the boils and sores and the white clay they blow onto his back. Through the frosted clear armor, I am hoping it will look enough like skin.

Thanks Logan! I ended up going with the following wig: http://www.cosplaybuzz.com/products/lf323 It took a couple of weeks to get here, coming from China, but I'm happy with my purchase. It's really well made, is adjustable and fits snug, and it isn't overly shiny or too synthetic looking. I couldn't find any shorter wigs in this color or style, so I ended up just cutting a few inches off of this one, using a straight razor to give it a rougher look. I also rubbed some white powder throughout the wig to make it look a bit lighter and dirtier.

Eriks,

I ordered one of these http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007QP69D4?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s01 (Note, it runs really small. So order one or two sizes bigger). Just like ahoudini, I plan to dye mine. I don't think I'll be doing any boils or marks for my costume. I'm going to be a hot mess as is.

Speaking on the topic of Joe changing during the course of the film... I was talking about that with the rest of my costume group and one of them had the idea that Max is an unreliable narrator. We then googled that and found other theories on why Max has a son in one film, and a daughter in another.

I started added the lining to my armor last night, and I finally found something the clear worbla is amazing for. We were able to sew the lining on without any issue. We sewed the fabric on top of the armor so that it can fold over itself and a metal wire we have around it providing additional strength and shape, and then glued it to the inside. I'll get some photos up tonight showing how that turned out.

It is a little off-topic, but I don't think Max is the unreliable narrator in the film - I think effectively, Fury Road can be understood to be narrated from Furiosa's perspective. Part of why you see Max trundle off into the night to face the bullet farmer off-screen, imo. Her character is told pretty outright that Max is also looking for redemption, so the blanks are filled in by the various people haunting him throughout the film. :)

A lace front wig means you can conceivably try cutting the widows' peak hairline into it if you're feeling brave. I think it's a big part of what makes him look menacing 24/7.

This woman has a pretty good tutorial for the process, too. Thanks for the link, though. I'll probably end up picking that one up.

Yeah, very true. I noticed that and did consider trying to cut a widows' peak into the wig. The problem is that if I cut the wig to match Joe's hairline, I'd have to pull the wig so far down in order to hide my own hairline, that the widows' peak would end up way too far down my forehead, and would probably look awful. I might be able to cut a less dramatic widows' peak into the wig though, something I'll keep in consideration as I get closer to completing the rest of the cosplay.

Great images! Definitively one black grip and one white on the guns(yay!).

fantastic pics, thanks for sharing! these will definitely help me with constructing my holsers and belt! i've been trying to figure out what material they used underneath the phone mainboard on the chest, anyone have any ideas? also, those parts connected to the bellow, that hang above the shoulders, i'm assuming they're air filters of some sort, maybe from a motorcycle, or a lawnmower?

Motorcycle air filters. I am guessing small and vintage bike. Mine are a little too big. I used leather under the two phone boards.

I will post a photo later today.
