I'm OUT of the 501st!

I don't get all the hate towards a group that does so much good. You don't like the people in charge? Either ignore them or don't troop. I just don't understand how someone can bash this group so much. It just sounds like sour grapes to me. You don't like how it's being run, you think you could do better, and you never got the chance.

I dont think JJ was a Vader, I simply think he posted to let us know that he quit the 501st since there has been such an influx recently? Is that about right?
[/b]
I quit a short time ago, actually I posted in reply to the various "I'm in." posts. That was the influx; of announcements. No hate implied :)

I understand that YOU meant no hate, JJ. My post was in response to everyone who felt the need to vindicate your leaving by slandering the group itself.

hey im not bashing, I just want to know why all of sudden its now 100 percent cannon, losing all custom costumes, as I said its understandable at cannon events, but the custom characters did not have to be booted out of it.

From what I've been hearing, the problem isn't a "let's boot the costumes out" as much as a "we've been too lax on our requirements, we need to fix that" Customs were never "in" officially at the Legion level, so they can't now be "out". It's that some GML's laxed the rules and now management is tightening them back up.

And for the record, I am not anti-Custom. Heck, I'm one of the older lurkers on HV&M. Nor am I someone trying to say what is right or wrong about removing costumes. Just trying to explain what I've heard.

I'm not in the 501st and had a question...

I'm not the perfect trooper height or weight...do they have requirments for Vaders (height wise) and troopers (short or heavy)?

Or is it more of the costume needs to look right?

I'm just asking, thinking of joining and wanted a little more info. I'd hate to send in an application and have somebody tell me I don't have the "look" because I'm a little heavy or short.

Oh make no mistake, I don't like them ;) The anti debates are based on numerous conflicts that are rarely addressed so much as swept under the carpet.

"You don't like how it's being run, you think you could do better, and you never got the chance."

Buddy, the first and only time a bulk of our group tried to voice a complaint, we were BULLDOZED over. We were overridden, ignored, and overruled without a lick of authority to do so. We tried, legitimately, to start a new group(trying ourselves) and were ignored by all the appropriate people. It's a joke, dude. From A-wing pilot to Zuckuss, it's a wannabe military group. With all the swollen heads and sad leadership that wouldn't thrive anywhere else.

:lol

That must have been an awkward conversation.
"Man, I can't see a thing in this crazy hat."
"That's no hat, it's a helmet. You're a custom fett."
"Wha..?.?"

Ok, so there are debates that are swept under the carpet. Here's the thing, though. EVERY time I have heard someone complaining about the group, it is always very general complaints, with no specifics given, which just makes it sound like whining. You want people to take you seriously when you bash a group that provides many people with countless hours of entertainment? Then actually tell people what happened rather than "We had a complaint and were bulldozed". What was the complaint? What were the circumstances? WHO did the bulldozing? Were you civil from the outset, or downright confrontational?

All I'm saying is that sure, local garrisons may sometimes get corrupted and such, but don't paint the entire group with such a broad brush. My local garrison is great, and everyone in it is very helpful and friendly. And even if the leadership is crap, I'm willing to look beyond what a select few have done in the past and look towards the good that this group does for children, because that is why I became interested in the group, and to me, nothing else could be more important. Not the conventions, not the commercialism, and certainly not your petty bickering.

Does it really make that big of deal though? Dude wants to leave. No big deal.

In the grand scheme of things who cares? You like it or you don't. The key is to not take it so seriously that you get offended. I personally choose to not like the club based on my experience both as a member and non-member. I've got every right to have that opinion and voice it, so does everyone else regardless of the popularity of said opinion.

It should be noted though that I have very close friends still involved in the group. You better believe I still costume with those guys. True friendship transcends club membership.

P.S. Yes, you can resign from the Legion. No, customs were never an officially accepted costume. Yes, there are bad eggs, as in any large (3000+) organization. No, the Officers (leaders) of the 501st are not corrupt powermongers. :)

You think the 501st is bad you should try to particpate in a local Fan Force group...

Man, I could tell you stories...

501st guidelines ensure height, weight, gender, and race are NOT considered when evaluating a costume for membership. Rather, the applicant's costume is the determining factor.

If the costume is a reasonably accurate recreation from film or other LFL SW sources, and it represents a villian character it is a good candidate for 501st membership. (While membership officers are encouraged to ignore body type, the costume itself must be fitted to the applicant--if your Vader cape falls two feet over the floor, it should be tailored to your height before membership will be assigned.)

We spoke about this at Flashback Weekend. I guess I understand that you are still cross over the policy. The custom crack-down in the 501st generated a lot of hard feelings. I wish there were another way. But as the Legion grows, we need to be clearer as to what membership to the club stands for. At the very most basic level, the 501st Legion is a celebration of recreation and mimicry of established SW characters. While the costimization of established costume components is an art, it is something different.

Triumphs are excellent motorcycles, but you cannot join the Harley Davidson Club with a Triumph. I do believe that the Harley guys would be happy to have you roll with them. Just as most 501st members would be cool with trooping with you at standard faire events.

Be well,
Thomas

Your size is not a consideration in membership. Only your gear. :thumbsup

Well, I'm monitoring the 501st, a few detachments and my local garrison for a while now as I needed some time to complete a costume.
Of course you experience some strange behaviours but like Tuskentrooper said - that is just usual in a bigger group. You can never satisfy all.

Nevertheless I applied at the beginning of the week totally aware of the fact that there might be fights about this and that. But I just want to troop with people with quality costumes so all these "power politics" that are quite normal for even the smallest group of people are not my concern.
If that is important for people let them have it - it's just a hobby; but...

about costume standards I have to say that the 501st is not just a costuming group but also represents George Lucas creation in a scale beyond any costume group I have seen yet - this demands for a certain standard and look. On the other hand the members of the 501st get a lot of recognition and smaller 'rewards' for this dedication.

Am I one of those power tripping, swelled head, wants to pretend he's military command types? I'm the Legion Merchandise & Branding Officer, the only other elected Legion Command position besides the CO. So I guess those criticisms are being applied to me?

Just wondering. :)

But you can join w/ a custom Harley.

I wouldn't join w/ a Terminator outfit, but a custom Fett, you betcha. It's simply an alteration of the stock body.

I know a costumer with an AWESOME Vader costume who was a member in good standing (with a different costume) and was unjustly kicked out due to nothing except politics and power struggles.

Question: When is the 501'st going to recognize 'Darth Vader' as an Imperial costume? (and by Darth Vader, I mean Anakin after he has killed Mace and become Vader, but before he dons the black helmet and armor- AKA 'Evil' Anakin).
