I'm OUT of the 501st!

While a lot of the 501st membership does charity work, it's not a charitable organization, it's a costuming club. A lot of people inside and out of the oraganization don't really understand that.

Exactly.. That's why they(we, technically) shouldn't have such stringent requirements for costumes. Sure, make requirements for FORMAL events(GL events, BIG premieres, etc..), but the rest of the time, you don't need to stay within the realms screen accuracy. If that were the case, you'd need to throw out GT armor(which I have). The point it *fun*.

Love the car by the way. I've got an '02 GT with those same wheels.

Thanks. I've had it for two weeks now and can't get enough of it. :D

For those who celebrate the fact that they quit the 501st - Don't let the door hit you in the @$$ on the way out. I stayed in to make a difference - not whine about what I didn't get out of it.

+1 Well said, here here, ditto, amen, preach on brother..

Good point:)

The charitable aspects of the 501-st. and make some friends along the way

From Article I of our Legion Charter document:
"...The Legion is a volunteer club formed for the express purpose of bringing together costume
enthusiasts and giving them a collective identity within which to operate. The Legion's aims are to celebrate
the Star Wars movies through the wearing of costumes, to promote the quality and
improvement of costumes and props, and most importantly to contribute to the local community
through charity and volunteer work..."

and I quote from the above,

“and most importantly to contribute to the local community through charity and volunteer work”

hhhhhmmmmmmÂ….seems I have a lot yet to learn.

Time to research other organizations that do charity, that were not formed to do charity?

I am in this club for 2 reasons. First, I get to put a smile on a kid's face. There is NOTHING in this world better than that.

Second, I joined the 501st because they have the same interests as me, Star Wars and costuming. Have I spend ungodly amounts of money upgrading this part or that part? Most likely, but I am not going to brag about it. I love my Vader the way it is right now. It is not uber ESB accurate, but it is close. Just as long as that little kid looks up at me and smiles, my job is done.

Long Live the 501st.

Hey, that's my Garrison. :D What I mean is we are not a real (read; legal/official) Charity, like your costume won't be a write-off or anything. ;) I understand what you're thinking & why. We do a lot of charity work, but that doesn't make us a charitible organization. I know it sounds weird. With that in mind however, if I only make one event in a year, it is out Garrison's toy drive to support out hospital visits & kids events. So charity work is a top priority, even for an accuracy nut like myself. :thumbsup

Wow. I'd heard about some of these "issues", but manoman. That said, I'm as eager to join the 501st as I was when I first thought "It's gotta be easier to build Boba Fett than a Stormtrooper" Sheesh. :rolleyes Was I waaaaaaay off or what?.

Another dumb idea I had was not to do any other SW costume until I finished Fett. Boy, that sounded inspiring at the time...not any more. :rolleyes Over at TDH, I've helped many realize their Quest for Fett, as mine drags on and on...but one of these days...it's pretty darn close now, and I can join the 501st.

I've lots of friends over there, and while it's such a darn shame that so many have had negative experiences, it sure appears that the organization has tried awfully hard to rectify the situations. And, it sure appears that the positive experiences overwhelm the negative.

One of these days, I'll have my Fett done, or probably my Clonetrooper. Dang, one way or another, I'm getting into the 501st.

Just a sidenote too, my local garrison (when it becomes mine) are great guys. I love it when Mark calls me up and asks: "Got your Fett done yet so you can troop with us??" :lol :lol I think it's awesome.

I talked w/ the guys at the Calif State Fair at the Hall of Heroes exhibit (not 501st or SW) and they all were more than willing to help me get my gear ready and to go have fun with them.

This year has been challenging, losing my marriage and starting over. My TDH, Clone, Bat, USCM buddies have been superb bros, talking to me, listening, being incredibly supportive. Most of whom I've never even met in person. It's a fantastic hobby. Yeah, I know I'm going off on a tangent here...bear with me.

Most of them are in the 501st. I expect the good natured ribbing of "You done YET?." Heck, I deserve it. B)

Sheesh, what a long winded way to say, I like costuming, I like Star Wars and I can't wait to join the 501st and troop with them.. :lol :lol (Heck, then I might tell them about another dream I have...our small agricultural town has the states longest running annual parade. Yes, longer than the Rose, etc. I've always had a secret dream to have a bunch of Stormtroopers in that parade. Coming down the main street, I've had that picture in my mind for years now.) One of these days...maybe next year.

Okay, I'm good.

Back to our regularly scheduled programming...

Actually, I have heard that some 501st members have successfully deducted things like mileage and even the cost of costume upkeep from their taxes at the recommendation of their tax advisors. Personally, I participate for personal satisfaction and charity---and I don't expect to be reimbursed or rewarded for either. :) Troop on.

It's nothing unethical (charities themselves write off all kinds of things). I'm just not 100% it's worth the paperwork and it may only apply to certain situations (charitable event vs. cons and state vs. federal taxes). I'm not an expert in the area. Perhaps someone here is and can start a new thread about it. :)

I left the 501st and more specifically OLG because it seemed like a popoluarity contest. The more money you put into your costume(s) the farther you will go in the garrison. I was costuming on a budget and that just didn't seem good enough for them. Other members who purchased costume after costume after costume rose in popularity and the ranks of the group.

Before OLG split from GC it was much better. The split itself was pretty bad. One day they're annoucning the split and asking for name suggestions and art work and then such is submitted and everything has already been decided. If you're not going to take imput why ask?

My only regrets, not leaving sooner and not getting my hotmelt caulk gun back before leaving.
