I Need help to Id old 50's or 60's Scifi Film

My Dad and I were chatting today about the old Scfi films he grew up on and saw when he was in High School, The one film title that He couldn't remember had to deal with a robot ( didn't most of them back then ) Who befriended a boy, we believe the robot was built by the boys Father or was from Space, As I said it was A long time ago and Pop's memory isn't what it used to be, I remember seeing the film myself once when I was 7 then again when I was 15 but never got the title of the film. I do remember the Robot shooting a white segmented laser out of it's eyes, and it was a Black and White film. I'm looking to star a small collection of the old Scifi films for Pop for Christmas and this was one He would like.

Was the robot "played" by Robby, from Forbidden Planet, by any chance? If so, sounds like The Invisible Boy.

Thanks for the replies, 0neiros got it, it was The Colossus of New York. and thanks for the suggestions for the collection, I think I'll buy 2 copies of the films 1 for Dad and 1 for me.
