Problematic issues with iconic film stories

Always wondered why Donovan's men acted like goons when they pick Indy up in Last Crusade.

Sure, Donovan ended up being a bad guy, but at that point in the movie, it was unnecessary. Makes me wonder if Spielberg was trying spontaneous things shooting that scene and kept it.

Just watched Forbidden Planet for the zillionth time. Great movie, I love it, but......

Look, I'm not a left winger and I understand you shouldn't judge movies for the time they were made, I get it.

That being said, the sexism and mansplaining in that movie did not age well.

Cannot judge History with our current society's laws/feelings. Those were different times for sure;)

If you cannot view movies as a product of the time they were made, don't watch movies.

That was my dad's favorite scifi movie. I watched it again a year or two ago and agree. The fact that the crew is trying to trick Altaira into kissing them by telling them it's how you greet people (something like that) is super creepy.

Think a step farther.

"Kissing" may have been the G-rated version of what the writers had in mind. :(

Always disliked how they show slightly- to a lot overweight people always eating so grossly and almost always have it smeared all over their faces. No one eats like that.

It's like, if the character is not slim they suddenly become slobs, even out in public.

Just ran into it in Friday the 13th pt 5. And remember noticing it in Paul Blart Mall Cop too.

Never liked that kind of obvious shaming.

Old movies are good education on their time and we can reflect ourselves in them and how we have changed. They are not there to change us. The issue comes when we now try to change or censor or ban them.

I think the disclaimer Disney put up in front of some of their old movies is great;

This program includes negative depictions and/or mistreatment of people or cultures. These stereotypes were wrong then and are wrong now. Rather than remove this content, we want to acknowledge its harmful impact, learn from it and spark conversation to create a more inclusive future together.

The problem IMO is when people have an issue with even acknowledging something with as mild a compromise as this. People got mad about this and wanted it removed!

That's new. Previously Disney edited movies. Just look at Splash and how they CGI'ed extra hair in to cover her butt.

And removing scenes from old movies, such as The French Connection.

People who want things banned, should be banned.

The fact that they think they have to is pathetic though. It shows just how stupid the "modern audience" actually is.

Or young, or autistic, or from another culture, or impressionable, or sick, or religious.

America is a melting pot; I hesitate to go directly to "stupid" when Disney seeks to communicate to such a massive audience.

The Interstellar one didn't bother me that much. Cooper was tricked in to going, and he really is sacrificing himself with the idea that what he's doing will save his kids. As a parent, I know I would sacrifice quite a bit if it meant the safety of my kid, even if it means I don't get to see him again, but ensuring his survival.
I always thought that he arranged for himself to go because not going was worse.

but Pinto doesn't hook up with her. After he finds out her age/she passes out, they do the Angel/Devil bit and he takes her home in the shopping cart.

Maybe? I honestly don't know. I mean, look, at the end of the day, it's a college freshman banging a 13- or 14-year-old girl. The actor was, I think, 19 or 20 at the time, but we're basically playing statutory rape for laughs here. And yeah, I know that in the early 60s, those kinds of relationships happened. But still. When viewed through the lens of modernity, it's...problematic.
Let us remember the the scene at the end when she runs up to her parents, (in the wreckage of the grandstand) with him in hand and announces, “This is Larry Kroger, the boy who molested me last month. We have to get married.” The scene ends with the freeze frame stating he was an editor at National Lampoon Magazine.

Except Disney isn't trying to communicate with a massive audience, Disney has a very specific, very narrow political bias and is only trying to push that. That's why they are failing miserably so often these days, because they aren't trying to cater to their actual audience, they're trying to push an agenda.

Lol Disney absolutely does not have any bias towards anything they think is unprofitable. They still make sure to have any overt displays of homosexuality easily snipped out for regions that don't like it.

If it seems like they're not pandering to you specifically anymore it's because they think there's more money to be had elsewhere. That's all they care about, they could not care less about political agendas. And if it's failing them it's because the woke kids can see the corporation isn't really their friend.

That's obviously not true or they wouldn't keep doing the things that make their movies bomb. You know what doing the same thing over and over and thinking you'll get different results is, right? That's Disney right now.

If I can pipe in about Forbidden Planet…I’ve seen it countless times. But recently as an older adult I’ve been kind of amazed at Morbius’ reaction to Altaira recounting about a little”hugging and kissing, that’s all!”. He’s NOT furious, as many fathers would be, towards Altaira NOR JJ and the rest of the crew, in fact he seems to take it in stride. His conscious self seems to recognize that Altaira is an adult, trusts her, and understands this all may happen for her either Altair 4 or on Earth, if she goes there. Now his *Id* on the other hand…

He absolutely, 1000% sleeps with her on the football field. Even back when I first saw the film probably around, like, 1990 or so, that stuck out to me as "off" about it. It in no way holds up today. The rest of the film is often funny, but there's a lot of stuff that just...isn't for modern audiences.
