I'm afraid that I'm not much of a purist where props are concerned. I see so many things in movies that I like, but prefer better with my own spin on them. Make them more my own.
I paint as far down into the neck that I can get.
I use acrylic enamels which once fired (baked in a regular oven) are very durable.
What I've found is that it's not so much the cork that's an issue, it's that bottom retaining ring that mars/damages the paint. The bottles are not uniform. This is especially evident inside the mouth, in the throat. Where a particular cork, such as from a wine bottle will fit snugly in one bottle, it will slip right down though another bottle.
So, most often, after the cork re-assembly, I'll whittle down that lower washer. Just to be safe.
If you'ld like any help, pointers, and/or suggestions in devising your own design, just let me know.
