I'm guessing it's a no, but does anyone have the full graphics and or Tutoral on making the Marauders Map in Harry Potter 3?

I finally saw it the other day and thought it was the coolest paper prop.

    Anyone, anyone? [IMG]

Well one thing we noticed while watching it the last time was the castle walls werent even walls but words.

If anyone was interested we did a sample marauders map effects test on my site before we even knew what it might look like.

    take a look

OK so no one has info on this, SO.
Would some one be kind enough to do some caps of at least the entire front and maybe first page for a dummy display?

    Pretty Please. [IMG]

The issue with the film map is that there are multiple fold-out layers and TONS of text that is hard to read. I was excited to see what they'd do with the map in the film, and it is handled brilliantly - its just not something that is easy to replicate.

I'd settle for one that was just the front page [IMG]

Front page is fine with me.
The length of the whole thing open looks to be a good 6' to 8' or more.
    That's a lot of paper.

I'd just like a good pic of the whole face.

The pix above are very nice but cut off the top and bottom. [IMG]

I ran some of the pix through Photo Shop to try and scale it out.
What I thought was more folds looks to be more pages off the center.
    (see pic)

Now using a pic of Harry with wand in hand which is 14" long, I got a rough height of 18" and width of 8".
Than using the above pic and a few others I got a rough measurement of 56"
So the over all size comes out to be about 18"x56" give or take.

    Thought's, comments, better measurments? [IMG]

I also noticed that tha text that makes up the walls repeats itself quite a bit.

If you have the DVD, there are Marauder map details faded into the background of the paper insert. The title page has a reproduction of the map face before you open it ("Messrs Moony" salutation and castle walls.)

For an artist, there should be enough there for a good start, if all you're after is the look of the folded map.

    Thanks for the tip.
At the moment me Mum has my DVD.

I thought I had the basic paper construction figured out but I need my DVD back to figure out one section.
    This ones throwing me off.
I figure I'll do the basic graphics layout of what I have pix of then finish it off when I get my movie back or someone posts more pix.

I noticed this morning that "Marauder" makes up a large portion of the text on the map. [IMG]

If you're just making the first page, why not make the map as Snape sees it? Then you have a reason for it being blank.

At the moment I'm trying to figure out the overall bulk.
What you see on edge not just a copy of the face to put in a frame.

Even if it has no graphics it still has all the pages. [IMG]
Not looking for the easy way out on this project.

Newsprint would make a good base to start. Contact your local newspaper, they sell the last bit from the rolls that are left over from printing. They usually charge like 25 cents an inch thickness of whats laft from the core. Nice hight on it and then you can make it as long as you need to by just rolling out more as you need it.

As for the actual printing, well im still working on that one.

I have a role of printing paper from the print shop my Mom used to work at, so that part is covered.

I think Michaels has calligraphy sets on sale this week, although I think I still have my old set somewhere.

just need to get the inks.

Actually you want some parchment paper not newspaper. newspaper would be the wrong texture and weight, let alone color (although it could be aged of course to be close).

    And dont forget red ink.

I just thought of another place where you can get some nice shots of the front cover of the map....the WB HP website had a nice flash map going on there..... yup just checked it's still there! And don't skip the intro as it shows the entire map unfolded so one could at least see roughly how long it is.

    www.harrypotter.com

Good luck!! Looking forward to seeing your progress!!

I had started a folder on sections of it awhile back, but geez that's a time consumer!
The official web site does have a good animation on how it folds out though!

I've found an interesting resource for those interested in creating this map: "Medieval Woodcut Illustrations"
    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0486404587/qid=1102567147/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl14/103-1577093-5819843?v=glance&s=books&n=507846

It's clearly one of the inspirations the artists drew from in creating the map cover illo. Click through the "Look Through This Book" to see what I mean: very similar treatments of wall shading, doorways, etc. I have the book and some of the other city drawings are even more dead on.

Well, I was able to down load the newest version of the Quicktime Clone program that enabled me to visit the Official HP Site.

Still trying to get some clear screen caps without the banners and that * shrunken head that keeps getting in the way. [IMG]

So far I at least have an idea of the direction to go in now. [IMG]

Once I get some clear caps I will post them here of others to use.

    Cheers...

I would pull caps from the widescreen dvd and the fullscreen as the fullscreen will show some parts of the map that the W/S doesn't show b/c of different formatting.

    OK here it is.
I finally capped the map off the Official site.

Took a while to get them without all the banners and such.
These where place in Photo Shop at 100dpi even though they are 72dpi off the net.
For posting I knocked them back down to 72 so the images are smaller than they appear on the actual web site.

If anyone wants a larger version or a particular image let me know.

Not yet, just found a few more images yesterday.
And did a prototype for the little pop up stair cases.
Will probably start mapping it out this weekend on regular paper.

I've been looking for the correct color ink and the paper.
That's one big piece of parchment.

Guess if I have the time next week end I will have to go to Berkeley to look for materials.
    Slight detour from WonderCon.

Doesn't help that I have projects for other people going on.

I've been going over all my pictures and decided I will need to do 2 versions. [IMG]
    the half open version.
and the full open version that was seen on Lupin's desk and Harry's dorm room.

I have images that cover almost all the details for both.
The half open will be suitable for framing. [IMG]

Here's a link to a website that makes and sells authentic parchment paper from animal skin. Just thought you might like this if you want to go really authentic. I think they even sell it by the foot.

This may be the way to go, especially for the half open version since it would be a well seen show piece.

I think Goat #4 looks the closest.
    Better than Deer #2

It looks like it was taken from a promotional party for the DVD release. Couldn't find any larger pictures neither :unsure Not sure if they gave a copy out as a promotional, but wouldn't that be nice? :D

BTW did anyone get a chance to go take pictures at the toy store in London that had props on display?

Hey someone in Germany has created a fan version...

Just do a search for it on ebay under "Harry Potter Marauders Map prop replica Azkaban"

It looks pretty good, although the pictures don't show off what they say about it.... the markings in red and on yellow parchment... but they could have treated the photos so they're more easily seen... The cover is a bit off though......

Still interested in one of these though...

It looks ok. not at all screen accurate. Color's are off, writing at the bottom is completely off, the tree in teh backround is painted and not written as it should be, even the dimensons are off. Much too small for one, and it's to short and wide. It should be narrower. Have no idea why somebody would pay that much for that.

The Maps that are on ebay always have extra stuff from the book in them and points of intrest in the movies.
Most of them don't have the correct details for what was seen on screen since they are made for kids to play with.
They don't even try to get the size right.

One I saw was done with a blue ball point pen. :confused
Most seem to be coming from Australia.

The last one I saw was very well done it terms of doing all the correct fonts and stuff but the content and size where way off.
It was probably done on a computer and printed out.

Considering they never show the whole * map in the film, it seems like a plenty of creative license could be used in making one. Is anyone really going to bitch if not every letter is perfectly on with the movie??

I never found the one on ebay, just a whole lot of lego sets, but the whole "screen accurate" snobbery is getting old around here. Screen accurate is cool, but it's also cool when some one takes the time to do their own version of the map, and ya know, since it was in a book first using your own imagination is OK dammit. :)
