Will the transistor be removable as I'd like to stick a real one in there?

yes. separate piece so you can paint the side walls.
I made mine based on overlays of the photos so it's about 8.8mm diameter. the transistors I've seen are a bit smaller than that so depending on what you have, it may be a slightly different size.
