Hi! I have boobs and I make...

hey im Zaya... new to this forum!
have been making costumes for as long as i can remember (thanks to my moms sewing lessons and years of dance costumes) ...im a huge fan of halloween

good at sketching and have HAND SEWN most of my costumes (yes it takes forever)
with the help of my bf am learning pepakura design, making props with everytool in his bag (loooooooooove the dremel), and have friends from FIT (fashion institute) helping me learn to finally use a sewing machine!

costumes ive made: Laura Croft, Selene (underworld), Black Cat (spiderman), Nancy (Sin CIty), Harley quinn (batman animated series), venom (spiderman), leeloo (5th element), Alice (resident evil:extinction)....

I'm going to come out and say that I have a lot of issues with my body and self-esteem, so I am finding myself drawn more to androgynous or unisex costumes that in a way de-emphasize my body as a sexual object.

I would love to costume in the hot outfits, but my exposure to hardcore anime cosplay circles who had the collective attitude you should only cosplay those characters you deeply identify with *and* can pull off physically, has left a deep impression on me.

Can anyone else here relate to this?

I know everyone has something about them they are judgemental about. Just remember the reason we costume is to have fun. Am I built like Chris Evans, Christian Bale, or Chris Hemsworth??? Not even close. But I still have fun doing it, and I will be Batman for Halloween. And I don't care...I will be the sexiest Batman at the parties because "I" made my costume...Be proud of who you are and what you can do! Also in a room full of nerds, a female could wear a hoodie and sweats and still be gawked at! So remember that! You made your outfit, you are a female, and you have boobs (no matter the size) that makes you the triple threat! :love:thumbsup:love Happy Costuming!

I was saying this past weekend that my general rule of thumb is that I'd never wear a costume that would require me to get a bikini wax. This is of course ignoring the fact that I tend to like full body armors (Samus) and/or military type uniform costumes (HL2 Combine) way more than something like a spandex unitard with thigh highs. But maybe that's just me.

Hey ladies, I have a question for you that I've been wanting to ask for a while but I'm a big time lurker (look at my post count!) and never seem to post...

I'm Kat and I've been costuming for ~8 years or so though I still have way too much to learn. I'm married to another costumer (Aideon). We met at a con through the 501st - I was a b**** to him and he fell madly in love with me, of course

Anyway, here's my question: For those of you who are in relationships with fellow costumers (married or dating), do you ever have trouble sharing the work on a costume project or asking for help from your SO?
For my costumes, I always feel like I need to make everything or its not really my costume, which is utterly stupid but something I haven't been able to get over. My husband constantly offers to help me with things that aren't strong skills for me (anything involving moldmax, resin, styrene, etc and the tools that live in the garage) and I feel guilty for letting him help me. He did my helmet and armor for my TIE pilot and even though I made the jumpsuit and Officer's hat myself from scratch, I feel like I didn't really make that costume.
And YET, whenever one of his costumes requires sewing, which is my stronger skill compared to him, I have no problem helping him by doing parts for him and I still feel like its his costume that he made. I lecture him that we are a team and that we work together but in my head, I have this weird double-standard where its cheating if he helps me. I've started to get away from that recently but I find it still haunts me at times. Anybody else out there who suffers from that or am I just my own unique brand of crazy?

Now I have played laser tag with Kevin Sorbo

So jealous. All six seasons of "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys" were added to NetFlix not too long ago, and I'm currently rewatching all of the episodes with my girlfriend who has never seen them. Still such an awesome show, and Kevin Sorbo is great. He seems like the type who would be a pleasure to meet, I'm sure he's great with his fans.

Nope Nasakat....I've got'cha on that one. I'm TERRIBLE at letting people help me. Even when I know it's their skill set and they'd do a much better job or even if it's just to return the favour for me doing work on their costumes. I don't know what to tell you other than I bet lots of us suffer from it but I think it's what pushes us to learn more and be better costumers.

@Nasakat: when my gf decided to go for legion membership so she could troop too she did 99% of the work on her scout. The only thing I did was reshape some of the plastic with the heatgun. Since then, the only maintenance I've done on her suit is a small repair job on her chest plate where the plastic ripped. She jokes that her boobs were just too powerful. She's since redone the straps so it wouldn't put as much stress on the armor. For the most part, she is very independent when it comes to costuming and armor and has exactly the same philosophy that you do.

On the flipside, she's done quite a bit of the sewing for me on various projects but I was forced to do most of the sewing for my latest project. Which is good! I need the practice. :)

Hey all, I also have bewbs and make costumes. I discovered the RPF a while back, but I'm shy so I only lurk. Most of my experience is in sewing (although I'm no expert), but i do some occasional woodworking too. I've been a member of the SCA for almost 20 years and I still have my first awful t-tunic :p I'm a bit of a fiber snob (why use poly if you can get linen or silk?). Due to the aforementioned shyness it'll probably be quite a while before I post up anything I've done, but I wanted to say that I've had a great time sponging up the knowledge here.

And I'm going to be Sith this Halloween. :) Thanks to Moose and StewYZF750 for your mask threads :D

Since I couldn't do D*C this year, I decided to pull out the Ma Hunkel for the Baltimore Comicon. It was so hot, that I found myself wishing I could pull off some less "covered up" characters. I've been a little lazy, so I've been taping pictures of future costume ideas around the house to remind me to make healthier choices.

Also, can someone point me to a source for good corset patterns that come in bigger sizes? I found the perfect fabric and want to learn how to make them, but I don't know where to start.

Well, what size are you looking for and what era of corset? Butterick actually makes a decent pattern with Victorian and Elizabethan corsets that goes to size 22. It's B4254

If that won't work yourwardrobeunlockd.com has a nice tutorial on making your own pattern from scratch.

Thanks! The one on the bottom is more what I had in mind. I might have to modify the size a little. I'll check out the site as well. I'd like to make functional corsets to wear under clothes as well as fun ones to wear as tops.

I have boobs and have been messing around with costumes and props for the last 17 years give or take. I learned to sew when I was around 5-6 and haven't stopped since. I got into making props in High School and Junior College mainly out of necessity for the Theater program I was in. I have always been one to make (or take apart) things. My Dad would always let me play with his tools when I was little and showed me how everything worked and generally gave me the skills to look at something and understand how it breaks down and works. Made it pretty easy to take that and apply it to my craft skills to crank out some fun props.

I can't wait to get started on my projects for Dragon*Con next year.

Helm's Deep Elf Armor (armor tutorial here)

Ah! I just found this tutorial online the other day and I might be trying it out soon. I'm considering making a Brienne (Game of Thrones) costume and need to figure out the best way to do her armor. I'm thinking of going the foam route, so thanks for having this tutorial available! I've never really used foam before, so we'll see how it turns out. (My boyfriend made his Mass Effect armor out of foam, but that's quite a bit different from this!)

I haven't been actively keeping up with this thread, but I'll try to poke my head in here more often. You ladies offer such inspiration! And since I'm planning on making, what.. five? six? costumes for next Dragon*Con, I definitely need all the inspiration and motivation I can get!

I have a screen-used uniform and could attempt to pattern off of it but with the fabric and detail bits involved, you might be able to find another screen-used set for not much more than I'd need to ask for the commission.

Check out reelclothes.com and Ebay.....there are many many screen-used pieces out there.
