Hi! I have boobs and I make...

Got boobs here, first time costumer (working on an AC Robin at the moment), long time admirer. Obviously, I haven't had much experience but it inspires me to see so many ladies here :)

The amount of talent in this thread is overwhelming.
I've only recently started to dabble in cosplay this year.
I've always made my costumes for halloween, but I've only started to take it seriously recently.

I'm hoping to make an accurate costume from scratch for next years comic con.
Here's some of the costumes I've made in the past. Most of which were just for parties so unfortunately they're pretty crappy.

My Loki costume was a rush job and only took about 3 days to do with some paper mache and spray paint.

This was my Luna Lovegood costume for a harry potter party to celebrate the release of Deathy Hallows Part 2.

This was my outfit for comic con this year. The cast of Red Dwarf were there so I decided to go with a classic Arnold Rimmer outfit.

And this was my Halloween costume from last year. David Bowies Jareth from The Labyrinth.

So basically I'm here to learn, to get advice and some constructive criticism to help me become a better costume maker :)

I can't believe some people still go for the "if she didn't want that to happen, she shouldn't have dressed that way" excuse -_-

Neither, can I, Blobfish. -_- It's unbelievable people still do it, and it was even worse in the fb comments, which was how I stumbled across the story. It's the same mentality as that of rape apology. Just disgusting.
Luckily there are also people who recognize what **** it is to tell someone they can't wear what they want because someone else might do something nasty. Since when did we become responsible for the behavior of anyone but ourselves?

The point is, women do not have to pick between ALWAYS being flirty to any degree with everyone or NEVER being flirty with anyone to any degree.

We are individuals and you have to get to know us to know where the line is drawn... That is why respect is so key.

Exactly, Guri. It can be fun to flirt a little, especially if it fits the character, but you have to respect each other and know where the line goes. And this will vary from person to person.

Wow, Gizka. :confused I'd smack anyone who did that to me uninvited. I'm glad you have learned how to respond and are standing up for yourself. I think too many just don't know what to do in such a situation so they don't do anything. They just get uncomfortable and maybe try to downplay it to avoid extra attention.
The worst I've ever experienced myself was a guy circling around taking pictures of me and two of my friends. A bit creepy, but he never came near. (And then there was the guy who spanked me with a wooden sword, but that happened at a carnival where people are really drunk, so doesn't really fit the context here).

Help me ladies of the RPF you're my only hope! :)

Does anyone know where I can buy MAC chromacake landscape green? I don't have a pro account with MAC (wish I did) which is the only place to really buy the stuff. grumble grumble grumble I can't find it on ebay OR Amazon. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
The Girl that wants to defy gravity

I couldn't find any either when I did my Elphaba costume a few years ago... I ended up getting a similar shade of green from Snazaroo.

Thanks! I'll check out my local pro shop to see if they carry that. If all else fails I think I can get the right green from a Ben Nye dealer.

Not going to repost all the pics and take up bandwidth, but your papier mache' and spray paint looks better than any I've done. :) And your other costumes look very good as well, esp Gareth.

Hiya gals.
I was wondering if any of you have read this article from Geeks Are Sexy and what your thoughts are?

I say good for her for standing up for herself, but have any of you experienced things like this yourself?
The comments so far have been worth the read.

1st: all the ladies posting here show AMAZING talent, way to go!

2nd: I read the above article and WOW. I'm disappointed but not suprised there are inappropiate comments at cons, Mandy handled it very well. But "grabbing"? Is there no security at these things? I'm going to be attending my 1st con in costume in 2013, I'll have my daughter and wife with me, I have to say if the security won't do the job they should, BigDaddy will! Physical contact without an invitation is criminal activity. I have been reading about some women being grabbed, yet I have not heard about any of the grabbers being ejected, does that ever happen? I don't engage in violence towards living beings outside the judo mat, but if my wife were grabbed like that I would view that as battery, and react accordingly. Would I be ejected if a groper had his shoulder dislocated? Any trouble at chicago comic-con 2013, look for BigDaddy, Night- B***h, and Hit-girl, we'd be glad to "explain" appropriate behavior to to the seedier con goers. We will be in character and respond accordingly. (with clean language of course :) )

Hi, I'm new here, such a great forum! I am fairly new to cosplay, I did a Borg costume for Halloween last year and this year my husband and I are going to be Mystique and Gambit, I'm so psyched! Here's my Borg:

borgcostumesm.jpg

This year's costumes are more ambitious (I'm doing movie version mystique, it's a surprisingly tricky costume, especially since I don't have any real help in applying it so I have to make sure I can do it all myself!) Love learning so much about makeup and prop making and such!

theres a couple members on here who have done it, and theres a fair bit of info online about how the costume was done for the movie. best of luck!!

just starting my first project ever this weekend! dr. horrible's red labcoat. looking forward to getting my first sewing machine and starting on that project! first of many to come!

FieryRed, excellent Borg costume. Reminds me of a picture I saw from Destination Star Trek London. :) Good luck on movie Mystique. Those layers have always looked really complicated to me.

BigDaddy; I have heard of rare cases where someone is ejected from the con, but it have to be pretty bad before it happens. Most of the time 'grabbers' are more likely to get told off and the woman to walk away from anyone doing something inappropriate.
I wouldn't advise you to get physical unless it's actually necessary; practicing martial arts you will be judged harder if something happens. (I'm sure you know this. It's one of the first things we were told when I started taekwondo). Just keep things verbal if possible, and maybe remove any offending hands. ;) Remember that some people do think it's fun to do different things so the lines can get blurred, and sometimes people simply don't realize they are overstepping other people's lines. (E.g. some people like to hug for pictures, some can't stand any physical contact).

I can't help but wonder if there aren't some women playing along with this behavior... I mean, if every woman, regardless of what she was wearing and regardless of who was treating her as a sexual object, acted in offense and stood up for themselves, wouldn't guys in general get the message?

Maybe some women only seem to be playing along but are too passive or meek in their response and just wanting to get away from it or afraid of looking like a spoiled sport?

I mean, was that the first interview those guys conducted? If those guys got that sort of response before, they would not have been so shocked... something else is going on here.

Another thought is, maybe some women enjoy the attention from SOME guys because maybe they think those guys are cool or popular or attractive... so they play along because to them it is a flirting interaction. It is their choice to do so, they are getting something out of it too and not feeling used, per se.

Then maybe these other guys see that and think sexy women play along.

Maybe the real issue is that some men do not see women as individuals, they do not get that women play an equal part in any encounter that determines how they are treated.

And so they are shocked when a beautiful woman does not act with them like another beautiful woman did with someone else - wherever it is they saw it happening; real life, convention, movie, porn...

The point is, women do not have to pick between ALWAYS being flirty to any degree with everyone or NEVER being flirty with anyone to any degree.

We are individuals and you have to get to know us to know where the line is drawn... That is why respect is so key.

*Shakes head* I'm really sorry to say that I've seen girls at cons actually seduce guys and **** the whole con rather than to 'do' the hobby. These girls confirm the stereotype of the 'sexy geek'.

Anyhow, I just got looks and compliments. Nothing more.

I'm new to costuming and the forum. So far I've only made one costume, Jessie from Toy Story, and that was for the office Halloween party last year. While researching what I needed to make the costume I can across one of the build threads on rpf and I've been lurking ever since.

View attachment 122799View attachment 122800

I had so much fun making that costume and the "you made that yourself" comments at work were so much fun to hear I've been itching to start working on a few more but the fear of working on something above my skill level with nowhere to wear them stopped me from starting anything over the past year. My sewing abilities aren't that great..I can mend my husbands clothes when needed but anything above that is a stretch. So this past month I started researching and planning a hobbit costume and one of the captain america USO girls and one way or another I will learn how to sew.

After reading through this amazing thread..the beginner tips and support a few pages back I figured best place to start and be able to ask questions if needed was here.

You know what's cool? Someone recommended a costume for me to do earlier in this thread - Pam from Archer. I don't know if it was the same person, but someone posted a link to where I could get the dolphin puppet I would need for it. When that fell through due to the company not responding, I let her know so she didn't run into the same problem with that company. She also offered to send me the puppet I was looking for, in case I had trouble getting one on my own. I don't know if she wants me to mention her name, but thanks!

I have seen pictures of her with gray and blue dolphins, so these are options:
Aurora World 10" Dolphin Puppet
Fiesta Toys Blue Dolphin Body Puppet - 15 Inch

I just have to say I LOVE seeing all you gals getting your hands dirty with prop and costume making. I've been following the forum for awhile now, but am finally getting around to posting. I've been sewing for about 10 years, but only really tried making props and casting stuff this year for Halloween. I have to say I'm HOOKED. I plan on making a lot more costumes that involve armor or fun props. Currently I'm interested in both a Borderlands 2 costume and a Gears of War costume.

Here are some costumes I've made the past few years.

Our Halloween costumes! A combination of Mad Max meets Mario Kart

Anyway, looking forward to hanging out around here more!

I'm kind of jealous of female costumers cos they all look great. (I have Man Boobs, which just doesn't look the same in a corset!)
