WIP: Warhammer 40K Templars Chaplain Helm & Crozius

Hi.

I've been an RPF lurker for many years but have only just now had anything worth (IMO anyway) posting. I was recently bitten by the 40K bug pretty bad, so I've been using my printing lab to make stuff (Craftbot FLOW IDEX, two Qidi Plus 4, two heavily modified Anycubic Chirons and a heavily modified Anycubic Mega S.)

I recently completed my first full-size helmet (Black Templars Chaplain) and am working on a full-size Crozius Arcanum, which I scaled-up 850% from a table-top model to go with it. Anyway, here they are for feedback, criticism, or whatever other heresy applies. I've been learning as I go, so please bestow your collective knowledge upon me.

I'll begin experimenting with my airbrush setup on the next set of armor but for this project, I used Rustoleum rattlecans, dollar store make-up and random sponges/other squishy things for texture. Both the helmet and crozius are printed in Overture black ASA. The helmet is one piece, while the crozius is three due to its length.

Stay rad.

Sorry not a Warhammer peep, but how have you been a lurker with those skills. Nice work man!

Thank you very much! Just tried to do what felt right. Turned out okay. I need to work on my masking techniques. Nitto tape would be helpful I think.

Not a HUGE warhammer fan but I've been reading some of the lore after having played the latest Space Marine game if that counts? Lol. Really good job on the helmet anyway, the paint job looks amazing. I love the style of the helmets as well. Any plans on creating a full suit eventually? I really admire some of the warhammer suits I have seen, seems like the ultimate power fantasy to wear one of those suits.

Definitely counts! Titus is awesome. Thank you very much for the kind words. Yeah, I'm actually going to do a to-scale Terminator set of armor meant to wear over stilts. It'll be somewhere around 9' tall, I reckon.

Wow can't wait to see that completed, I looked up some pictures and looks like a walking tank haha. I guess you will be wearing drywall stilts for that?
Really fascinating these larger than life costumes imo, I actually would like to make one myself one day. Just the process of making a wearable suit that turns one into a giant something speaks to my imagination I guess.

I haven't decided what that would be exactly, but a Space Marine definitely would be cool to do. I feel like I would have to become a bit more familiar with 40K though.

Yessir. Drywall stilts adjusted for my height and proportions based on the measurements figured out using reference art. I'm roughly 5'11" at 200lbs athletic build, so not quite an Astartes, but I think I can pull it off. Getting mathy sucks but if I'm going to go big, I'm gonna do it right. I've weighed the idea of putting the armor on an endoskeleton, which would be an exoskeleton for me, but we'll have to see how that theoretically affects mobility. I have a bunch of whiteboarding yet to do. I also need to figure out the best plastics for less weight. ASA is great but it's not terribly lightweight. You can do a lot with foam, and there are some killer outfits made from it, but I want a person to be able to touch the armor and think, "Damn.. this is actually armor."

The 40K lore base is absolutely massive, so there's a million places and interests to choose from. Lots of books and what not.

Stilts will definitely help you achieve right build if everything is in proportion!
Also, I've had a little success hardening foam a bit by coating it with texture clay. Wasn't my main goal, I pressed aluminum foil into while still wet to create a 'forged metal', pitted look on my helmet. But I noticed it also dries to a pretty hard finish. It's flexible but still can crack slightly if applied to thickly. I used this one for my Witch King helmet and also will use it for the pauldrons I'm building:
Professional Modeling Paste
I think it's acrylic polymer with marble dust, dries to a 'stone like' finish that can be sanded.
It definitely makes the foam feel alot harder to the touch. Just make sure the parts don't need to flex THAT much cause it can still crack slightly when applied thick and flexed too much. (thin with water)

The challenge for me will be figuring out what to do when I fall over. That's good to know about the foam. I would like to eventually start using it but my sculpting skills are non-existent. Thanks for the link to the paste. I'll give it a shot!

I'd just practice with the stilts alot before going anywhere with them tbh, I think after a bit you'd get used to it.

Also I noticed I accidentally linked the regular modeling paste while I meant to link the flexible version:
Professional Flexible Modeling Paste
They're very similar probably why I made the mistake, but for armor you'd want all the flexibilty you can get when applied on EVA foam.

I think I read somewhere that you can also coat the foam in resin for hardening, but I don't have any experience with that.
