I decided to watch this show, "Heroes of Cosplay" after I saw my Facebook feed explode with negativity. I thought, "you know, what could be so bad?" Well, a lot... apparently.
One thing that I noticed, was the complete LACK of any male Cosplayers. I guess they're just not as much of ratings grabbers as a pair of **** and catfights, followed by multiple breakdowns, and questioning life choices.
The program excels at showing just how horrible Cosplayers are at planning. Seriously -- let's put a complicated costume together in 2.5 days, then cry when you don't win the $1000 cash prize. That's not what I thought Cosplay was... I mean, I thought people actually put thought and work into their pieces. Not throwing everything together at the last minute, and 'hoping' it will look bad ass.
I sat through the entire hour, and thought to myself; "Self, this isn't fun... this is work. A job. This is a job for these people; and apparently, validation." Because, you know, god-*******-forbid you should have a "9-5 job" like the rest of us puny mortals.
Ego. Yeah, there's a lot of it, but you kind of have to have it to be doing this kind of stuff. Though, it gets a little annoying at times because I have to deal with a ****-ton of ego on a daily basis; and I'm not thrilled to see it saturate my television viewing. I could go on about all of the Facebook "like" pages, and all of the shameless self-promotion therein, but I won't.
Bottom line is, I know tons of people who work hard for months at a time to create fantastic pieces and costumes; who do not feel the need to be the center of attention, or sell pictures of themselves. More importantly, would not go on television (let alone the SyFy network) to get exposure and promote themselves. Honestly, the art should speak for itself... not how much of your boobs you can get away with showing, or how short your skirt is.
Much like "Face/Off," this show is a horrible misrepresentation of the actual art, and should be taken for nothing other than pure entertainment. I really wish "Heroes of Cosplay" would showcase more work from other people in the community. The only Predator I saw, was a quick cut of Spencer Doe's suit. Not nearly long enough for the suit to read, and it was more of a "what the **** was that?" moment.
