Help with resin casting

Hi;

I know this isn't exactly a replica prop related question but a lot of you know more than me about resin casting so I thought I'd ask. I want to make a d20 gear shift for my friends car. I have a silicone mold ready to go but I had a question about the attachment point.

I was thinking of buying a bolt with the same threading as the gearshift, spraying it with mold release, placing that in the epoxy, and then unscrewing it when everything is hardened. Will this work or will it just permanently affix the bolt to the epoxy? My other thought was buying an appropriate nut and just leaving it in the epoxy.

I am open to suggestions. Thanks!

I'd probably just cast it with a nut in there. If you were to use a bolt and take it out (I'm assuming so it would be threaded?) those threads wont be all that strong. It probably wouldn't be all that long lasting.

I have put bolts and screws into resin before with few problems, Your casting just has to be thick enough so the walls don't crumble due to stress. Mould release will work as well, just make sure you use several coats. Removing the bolt may be difficult, but gently heating the casting in hot water will loosen the casting so the bolt will turn.

A commercial resin shifter knob usually has a threaded shaft embedded into the resin.

The walls have to be thick and I'm fairly sure that the car industry uses a special kind of plastic for gear knobs. Depending on the use of course (standard/automatic gear box) the bolt should be left inside, embedded into the resin.
