It looks like the leather ring fixing to the butt of the gun handle.

Yup, it goes on the bottom to hold the ring and leather. Insert the 1/2 ring, glue other 1/2 ring then glue onto the bottom of the grip

Nice one I thought it was for that, thanks for confirming, away to start on the kit tonight.

Update -

Well I got it all assembled last night and planning the bondo stage today to fill all the gaps, but what a great kit and so easy to put together, highly recommended to all

Some Primer, need some fine sanding/bondo and it's good to paint i think
