Re: Hellboy Costume - Hair punching!

So 4 hours in, this is where I stand:

Very tedious work, but I'll manage! Still some filling out work for the left side, but I should be pretty much finished with the front facial hair by tonight! The back will have to wait until I return from Montana.

Re: Hellboy Costume - Hair punching!

Face is coming along nicely! I've siliconed in what I have already punched. When I start back up I will be gluing in the back, and then it will just be a matter of punching the edges and filling out thin spots.

Re: Hellboy Costume - Hair punching!

Can't wait to see this in person! I'll be in my Freddy & would love a pic together.

Re: Hellboy Costume - Hair punching!

After a week of vacation, and another week spent mostly in bed due to allergies, I'm back to work on Hellboy tonight! He's currently in the studio drying, after having hair glued on. Once the silicone cures, I'll begin punching the remaining 1" of hair around the edge to hide the glued hair, and then he's going to get a haircut and style!

Pics later tonight when I can safely prop him up again.

Re: Hellboy Costume - Hair punching!

Holy cow that picture was way bigger than I wanted.

The hair is coming along very nicely. All the glued hair is done; now all I have left is to punch about 1" around it, finish running the hair to meet up with the mutton chops, and fill it out a bit. Gluing it was definitely the best solution. If I would have punched the entire thing, not only would it have taken forever, but it would have possibly compromised the integrity of the mask in the back.

I stacked it up on the back of his head to get an idea of how it will look (it's not tied nearly as tight as what it will be, but I didn't have anything to secure it other than some string). I'm really happy with how it's turning out. It's nice and secure, and with the amount of layering I did, the end result is extremely thick.

About a week ago I took the shoes to a local shoe repair shop to inquire about getting the soles re-done. The owner of the shop turned down the work. Apparently he doesn't need more business. :confused So now I need to search for a different shop to do it. Worse comes to worst, I'll cobble them together myself. I'd also like to get started on the coat this weekend. I've decided to do all the alterations myself. The person I had talked to about commissioning the work quoted me a price of around $200 for the alterations. I was ready to pay it just so I didn't need to mess around with it, but they flaked out on my and disappeared. Thankfully they didn't have the jacket at the time.

Wow! What is wrong with people these days? I would jump at the chance of doing something different in my job if that were me.
I wouldn't think there were many people that would turn work away these days. You should be grateful of what you can get work wise in this climate. Wig attitudes like that they deserve to go out of business. Is cobbling so busy at the mom

Great work , it's looking really good. Thumbsup.
Good luck in finding some good people to do the work.

Re: Hellboy Costume - Hair punching!

This is coming along awesomely! Can't wait to see progress into its final stages. Keep us updated!

Re: Hellboy Costume - Hair punching!

Thanks for the compliments!

I've begun the final hair punching. I'm using human hair now, which is a lot easier to punch than horse hair. I will use it to fill out the mutton chops, hide the glued hair, and to give him some "peach fuzz" to break it up a bit so it doesn't look too clean.

Tomorrow I'm hitting a local leather supply store to pick up leather for doing the duster.

Re: Hellboy Costume - Hair punching!

Hair is pretty much complete at this point! I gave him a shampoo and conditioner treatment today, then cut and styled his hair.

Re: Hellboy Costume - Hair punching!

Looking awesome Tony! Any progress on the RHOD?

I'll hopefully have some progress on it in the next week or two. I had originally intended to simply cut the fingers up into the individual joints and run a cable through them to allow movement, but I discovered very quickly that using the original fingers was proving way too hard. My work around is to use the original fingers as templates to make new fingers out of wood. I will attach each of the joints together with a metal hinge, and run the cables down into the hand. Then it will just be a matter of priming and painting.

I need to get the proper power tool to cut the fingers, and then assembly should be fairly easy (which means it will likely become absolute chaos).
