Headgoonie Back to the Future 40th Anniversary Denim Jacket

Following this thread with great interest, been after my first jacket for some time!
This 40th anniversary jacket is hopefully fixing to be their best one yet. They have been given tons of notes and references and the details that have come out so far make it look promising. Waiting on pictures of the final shapes and colors of the denim fabrics. The 2021 jacket used an almost perfect shade of blue for the shoulders and pocket flaps, but changed it for some reason for the 2023 release. I compared it to London's correct color vest in person and you would only be able to tell the slight color difference if you had each of them side by side like that. Lets hope they go back to the 2021 color.

As far as I know, the materials will be the same as they are now, but I haven't asked.
If they do use the same/similar fabric to HG that would be perfect, no modifications necessary. But, if not, you were definitely onto something earlier with the "order the largest size and send it to them for fabric."

I've just been shown the final paisley liner from Headgoonie. Compared to Nick's, these are a little less elongated and the yellow parts are more rounded.

Here is a sample of Nick's pattern for comparison.

That’s actually my old paisley FYI. New one has a very subtle detail on the tail of the pill that I believe is in the original.

I actually may need to compare HG’s to mine because it looks very similar. If they matched the rotation of the pills I’d be very curious how they got to that because I’ve never talked about how I arrived at mine.

As for working with them, I’d definitely do it. I just haven’t been keeping up with costuming stuff for a bit so I’m only really now learning they’re working on this. I’ll reach out and see what they say. Might be hard to express that the pattern is made directly from a right-style jacket.

What do you know that we don't lol!
Lol, I don’t know that I know any more than anyone else here I’m just another very big fan obsessed with Marty’s jacket.

This new Paisley print from HeadGoonie is quite impressive I must say! Nick’s was previously my #1 choice for paisley but I honestly think HeadGoonie’s is more accurate now.

Keep in mind Nick says this is a previous version of his paisley in the comparison, he has since improved it slightly. So I look forward to seeing that updated version on Spoonflower in the coming days. I know he has certainly done his research regarding the paisley print.

Having said that, so far I think I personally prefer the smoother roundness of HeadGoonie’s Paisley Pills, the classic rounded tail, and rounded pedals surrounding them. Where as Nick’s Paisley Pills have a more pointed tail, and more jagged pointed pedals surrounding them. Though I have a feeling he has improved these exact details already so we shall see.

Either way I think the community has made some amazing developments on this Paisley Print, even now 40 years after the original jacket appeared on screen we are still learning new things. I also firmly believe having options is always better than only having one choice, variety is the spice of life as they say.
We are getting so close to the original liner fabrics that Deborah Scott selected with both the Paisley and the Hollywood Stars prints.

Totally agree the pills should be rounded. ;) (this is the version that’s been available for about a year now)

PS: my liner is going to get even more accurate when I have time to incorporate my new reference pants. Seen above. My current matches up extremely closely. But there are a few details I had to reconstruct that I can now correct. But we're talking the difference between 99.7% accurate and 100% haha

EDIT: Just got confirmation that my Spoonflower store should be back up and running!

Okay that is a much closer comparison, and much more than a slight improvement! My mind is blown, honestly.
Not only have you corrected the roundness of the Pills & surrounding Pedals; but you’ve also managed to capture the Curve on the Tail and the inside corner that it creates.

Very much looking forward to any improvements you have for the Hollywood Stars print as well. So exciting!
Are those Denim Pants in this picture the ones that our good friend London Moore discovered and helped you source?

They certainly are the pants London discovered. The guy is a search wizard!

The hardest part with the pants is that I can’t just scan them and call it a day, I have to individually edit out every shadow from the twill texture. In testing I’ve found a process that seems to work, it’s just very work intensive.

And that subtle detail in the paisley tail took me so long to land on so it honestly means a lot to hear you call it out.

Like you said before, it’s amazing that we have choices. Personally if someone likes HG’s better that’s amazing because for years we didn’t have decent choices. So it’s nice that we can all finally get something that fits our personal view of some very blurry screenshots.

Well I don’t foresee HeadGoonie’s paisley fabric being sold separately, it will most likely be for those wanting to purchase a finished product.
Where as your Spoonflower fabric is sold separately and perfect for those wanting to make or modify their own jackets.

But yes having options for different budgets is always good, like you said for years there were no absolutely no options whatsoever. Now we have MaxCady, HeadGoonie, Magnoli Clothiers.

I’m am happy with how far the costuming community has come with BTTF in 40 years, and still excited what the future holds!

Impressive, Good colors! Just tell them to keep in mind; Only the faded Grey has that canvas style plain weave. Where as the dark Indigo has a classic denim twill weave.

Okay cool, good to know. I’ve never seen a HeadGoonie jacket in person yet, just photos.

FYI in case anyone wants to find similar fabric, crossweave and Hopsack are the two most common names for that weave.

Plain weave tends to be 1x1, hopsack is 2x2, crossweave doesn’t have a count but tends to be any weave where the warp and weft weave count is the same number and often involves contrasting warp and weft colors.

Most hopsack is pretty coarse but you can find better grades if it if you look around.

There may be better names, so feel free to share if you have any but those are the ones that have gotten me closest recently.

Aren’t the 2018 colors for the jacket the most accurate versus the 2021 jacket before the color fades in the wash?
