How much flak would I get for making my own version of Hawkman?

I ran across this image of a Hawkwoman version: Search Results hawkgirl « Fan Art Exhibit

I was thinking about taking the same idea and working with my own version of Hawkman for DragonCon 2011.

How do you think this would be received by the DC Universe folks?

I'm just thinking about it right now, thinking of something do make after I finish Tarfful.

That is such a bad photoshop job! But..on a theory of creating your own version of a costume. I think as long as you keep some of the iconic parts of a costume, i say go for it.

People do steampunk versions of superheros...so why not own ideas.

Yes, the photo was only an example hehe.

But I was thinking of generally keeping the same colors and design, but adapt the costume for the "real world".

My thoughts are, that if its done well, people will respond in kind. I was just trying to start a non-Ironman thread. lol

HAHAHAha, ah i think the Ironman threads are getting overtaken by Tron threads lol

I think any superhero costume if done well, and faithful to the core of original design, would be well received.

I think it's a great idea. If you get it done, let me know and we'll have to get together since I'm planning on bringing my comic-style Hawkman back to D*C in 2011.

Do a quick google image search for "Hawkworld" and you'll see all kinds of variations. Run with it!

Any version is ok if u "own" it and do it well. I will say the wings and helmet are the hardest. There are a few helmets now made, but to me they are all lacking seriously. The wings are another problem. That photoshop shows feathers which never look right. The scale is always wrong since there are no real feathers that are that size! You are talking a VERY high price for wings and helmet alone, no less if u go the leather route for the costume pieces. I think a good HAWKS is a great idea, but know what u are heading into cost wise and such. Good luck...will keep my eye on this!

If you receive any flak for making your own stuff, then you're hanging out with the wrong crowd, my friend.

I think that by even retaining a very minimal amount of the original character design, while promoting a new, personalized design would work well for the character. I mean, there are very few super heroes with big bird wings, and only one that I can think of that carries a mace, so it's not like you're going to be mistaken for Cyclops or Batman or anything.

Hooray for custom versions!

It would be interesting. I think the old-school Hawkman took his costume from various exhibits at his museum - like the helmet is supposed to be a ceremonial Helmet of the Egyptian god Horus, etc. A costume based more on history or variations of actual artifacts would be very cool.

icknaybob, sweet mace. did you cast it or is it for purchase?

This is a LARP mace. I found the picture online. I don't own one. I was giving ideas and reference pictures. Though, I do have commission coming up for the Smallville version of the armor.
