Hasboro Tatooine Blaster - Help Needed

Hi. I'm new to these boards and don't know if this has been covered here before; but I need some help. Made by Hasboro in 1998, this is based on the Tatooine Blaster as seen briefly in SWE1. From what I've managed to glean from various sources, this appears to be either an early model or a local knock-off of the DL-44 series blasters. You can certainly see the family resemblance, and the prop is definitely based around the Broomhandle Mauser. I've just bought two of these, one I'm painting in 'Han Solo' colours (I'll post some pics when it's finished); but I want to do something different for the other, including modding. Any ideas? Photos show the genuine prop, the original toy and a disappointingly low-res version of the only painted version I could find online. Any suggestions appreciated.

Cheers, Badsprout.

Steampunk - that´s the way for your second one :cool. This piece screams more "Steampunk" than it ever has screamed "Star Wars".

Paint it Brass, Copper, Silver - add tubing and little gears, maybe some glass parts, wood ...... :love

Nice idea, here's a WIP on the 'Han Solo' one and it's already looking a bit more steamy than I'd originally planned.

I took this picture (your #2 gun pic) at the "Star Wars" concert/exhibit in Tampa last November 1st.

Most of the pictures I took didn't come out so well because of all the sun light & fluorescent light glare on the glass cases.

Funny, we both took pictures of the same gun.

I can't take any credit for the pic, I found it on Flickr. Thanks for this one, though - was it actually brass coloured or was this just how the picture came out?

Here is the wookieepedia article on the blaster:
Tatooine blaster pistol - Wookieepedia, the Star Wars Wiki

"The Tatooine blaster pistol was a model that saw use during the last decades of the Galactic Republic. Vilmarh Grahrk was known to carry one of these blasters, and at least one was seen in Mos Espa on Tatooine around the time of the Invasion of Naboo.

This pistol was similar in appearance to blaster models produced by BlasTech Industries, such as the DL-44 heavy blaster pistol and its variants. The blaster featured a sighting scope above its thin barrel.

Grahrk used his blaster during the hunt for Quinlan Vos on Nar Shaddaa, though Vos outsmarted the Devaronian by reversing the blaster's power cell, in anticipation of Grahrk's betrayal. Grahrk went on to aid Vos, and kept the blaster in use for years to come. He pulled the blaster on Vos once more during the Battle of Kashyyyk, though the Jedi Master again overpowered the Devaronian. "

The 'real prop' doesn't look much like the toy, unfortunately. However, there is a photo of Grahrk holding the blaster, and that blaster appears to be modeled after the toy itself. I'll attach the one pic from the comic that I saved. You may be able to find more reference shots of the blaster if you search for Vilmarh Grahrk.

Nice find. I wasn't sure if the pic on wookieepedia was a modded toy or if there were indeed a few different props. I'd never noticed it on PartsofSW before.

I always thought the Tatooine blaster was kind of cool. I sometimes try to grab one off ebay to repaint, but they always seem to go for more then I want to pay.

Thanks for the help, peeps, I knew I'd come to the right place. I'm still undecided as to what I'm going to do with the 2nd one (besides, it hasn't arrived yet); but after looking at some of the other threads, I'm tempted to do a 'District 9' job on it. Keeping the butt and body of the gun black/gunmetal with the barrels, mag and upper works a dirty white with dark red/orange diagonal stripes. Hmmm, might just work...

In the meantime, here's the Slightly Steamy Han Solo version. I used satin black car spray paint as a base with gunmetal drybrushing and silver and brass enamels for the shiny bits. The only mods are a washer at the end of the targeting scope, and brass paper fastener heads for the rivets on the grips.

Turned out really nice, man. I'd be interested to see what you can do with one of those orange Solo blasters from the 90s. :)

Wow, that turned out nice as well. The handle looks really good. Did you dry brush/wash it to achieve the wood look?

Cheers, Mate. I used a generic Craft Shop dark brown acrylic over the matt black base, then drybrushed with Tamiya XF-64 Red Brown. It's the best wood effect I've got so far, and I used the same technique on the Tatooine.

Finally after a lot of trial and error, I've settled on a Han Solo/Box Art hybrid. Grips, barrel and lower parts are in my standard DL-44 colour scheme; but the scope and upper works are a mix of brown and red washes with gunmetal and silver weathering. Whaddya think?
