Harry Potter: Snape Build (HBP)

Wow, Sparticle...that dress is amazing! I'd be blind for 3 weeks after creating that!:eek

Rick...I went ahead and bought the LM pattern, anyway, as one can never have too many patterns! I'm thinking about trying them both, and will compare them side-by-side once they arrive; plus, I need to craft a pair of pants for my DK Joker costume, and I think the LM might work for that, too!:cool

Snape hair....anyone have any suggestions for a wig? I have already dyed my own hair China Black, but it's not going to be long enough by H-ween...I was thinking of a pageboy cut, but that might be too symmetrical...ol' Severus has some pretty natty hair...

I suggested the Laughing Moon pattern because I believe it is closer in style to Snape's pants with less alteration. The legs taper more than the Civil War costume pattern, and the waist is higher. The Laughing Moon pattern is, however, somewhat more complex to begin with, so if you're comfortable with doing more alteration on the McCall's pattern, go forth.

So in my opinion, Laughing Moon = more work just sewing, McCall's = more work altering.

Laughing Moon does have some of the best written directions of any pattern company. So that may be something else to consider for folks who need them. I don't remember the last time I looked at instructions though.

I actually used the McCalls as the base for my personal, perfected Victorian pant sloper. I did, however, severely alter the top (actually redrafted it), including raising the waist and inch and making it self faced. The legs are a great fit for a straight leg trouser though. But yes. I had to alter the upper pretty extensively to get what I wanted. The LM looks like it has a nicer butt to begin with. And a good Victorian trouser pattern will get used over and over again.

Kinda lookss like the same wig Michael Jackson wore.

That first one is a little short to my eye (remember it's a woman's wig and will be a bit smaller on the average male head).

None of the ones you linked are lace front, so the front hairline is a hard line, like the pic of the fellow attached below, rather than the fairly natural line a lace front creates.

But if that's not important to you, and you don't want to bother with the adhesives necessary for a lace front wig, any of what you found would do, and of course, they're cheaper.

PS - If you have a good hairline for Snape, you can place the wig behind your hairline and comb your hair into it a bit to soften the line of the wig.

Well, I just got back from my second visit to the exhibit. The robe and suit aren't blue, blue-black or pink. It's 100% black. The color variations are the light reflecting off the textures. I asked about the replica rumor I had heard before. Apparently it isn't a replica. It is the stand-in's costume -- and exact in every way to Rickman's (except size). Apparently Rickman is very fond of his costume and has decided to keep it.

An interesting note -- the Voldemort costume on display looks green. It is in fact black silk, but they threw a pale green drape underneath it because the black bodysuit Fiennes wears looks like Voldemort Men in Tights when its on display.

that is very interesting...but you couldn't have waited until the exhibit was closed? hehe, I was hoping to be able to make it, but sadly I won't. I was taking solice in the "fact" that it wasn't the actual outfit on display. :cry
But great information regardless!

Thanks for the tips, Rick. I really want to avoid the 'hard line' look, if possible. A question then (since I don't often wear wigs): What is this 'wig adhesive' you speak of, as it applies to lace front wig styles? Is it hard to use?

My own hairline might be made to work with a non-lace version, as I have a really high forehead anyway.

Juno,
Thanks for the observation and description of the stand-in suit. Did you manage to get any photos of it, by any chance?

Many thanks to Padwanlearner, Ghostsoldier, juno, and rickrickrick, for all the good ideas and suggestions for making a Professor Snape outfit. Using this information, I was able to have a reasonably good replica made in time for Halloween.

That’s my wife in her McGonagall robe. Next to her is Malfoy the white ferret, and between us is a table with a sorting hat and a tray with such things as a diary pierced with a large fang, and a two-handled tea cup with a badger. :)

OK, I should’ve lost the mustache, but I’ve had it for 30 years. :)

The cassock was made from the suggested bottom weight cotton, and derived from the Butterick 6844 pattern. The sleeves are flared on the end, and have the 9 cloth covered buttons. I used 5/8” diameter. The cuffs from an old white dress shirt were sewn into the ends of the sleeves. The buttons down the front are ¾” diameter. We ended up using 11, but I believe it should have been 12. The pockets are functional. Since I don’t have the talent for sewing, and my wife was busy making my robe, I ended up having a local costume maker do the tailoring. We supplied the cloth, pattern, measurements, and many Snape pictures, and he did the rest. I think he did excellent work!

For the robe/cape, my wife selected some black material from Jo-Ann Fabric based on drape-ability. We used a heavily modified McCall pattern 3789. I wanted to use AutoCad too to make the changes, but my wife thought that’d be a little extreme, so I used large sheets of paper instead. The “V” in the sleeve/wing wasn’t positioned quite right for the picture, and they probably could have been made a little longer.

I’m also wearing a white dress shirt with a satin-like ascot, ankle length square-toed boots, black jeans, and a cheap wig from Party City (Witch Black Wig). Hopefully, before the next Dragon Con, I’ll have some accurate pants, and the LF Silk wig as suggested by rickrickrick –Question – Should the wig color be “jet black”, “off-black”, or maybe even “darkest brown”?

The wand is something I made with a blue LED in the end and three AAA batteries inside the handle. No fancy scroll work.

You are a thing of beauty, ATL (as a Snape, of course! :))...that's one of the best Snape costumes I've seen in a while...you are to be congratulated! :thumbsup

I didn't get mine done in time for Halloween (I didn't think I would--it's actually aimed more for the Deathly Hallows releases to come), but I am really impressed with yours....it's beautiful! Do you have any larger pics of the suit?

I've got a question about the wand: Do you have a tutorial or a description of your light mechanism? I have mine sculpted (still have to pour it in resin), but I wanted to incorporate a bright LED for the tip, and I'm no electrical guy....:confused

Again, great work!
Rob

great job! I do like how it doesn't look obvious that you have an LED in your wand.
As for a wig color, I personally say Jet Black, but really I'm sure either black would work well. I would be hesitant over the darkest brown though, unless I could see it first hand, I'd say the other two black options are better.
