harry potter cosplaying

I am getting better and I think I have the hang of it now. Its only the pain and the blood that I dont like lol.

Also, I was looking through some of my reference photos and the tunics have black embroidered patterns along with the silver ones, are you doing the same? I think it looks good because you have the colours contrasting with each other but I'm going to have to think about my design.
I may have to completely change my design now though so I can include more of the black.

Hehe indeed, you want to go for embroidery without blood stains ;)

Yes i'm thinking about doing the same. For the embroidery on the tunic I am going to use a mixture of black and silver cord to build up the surface of the embroidery. For the very bright parts i'll be using a Chinese silk which will really bring out the swirls.
And since i'm doing the version with the arm parts, i'll be embroidering that as well (I first thought of just painting it on, but a friend advised me it would look much nicer using embroidery again).

That is a good idea using the cord to build it up. I haven't decided what to go with just yet. I'm ordering some more metallic embroidery thread and some black either tomorrow or friday along with my tunic material.

I also think I'm going to use the cotton velvet like you for the cloak.

Hmm today i was working on the leatherette arm parts and, despite what I wrote earlier about embroidering the arm parts as well, I think painting the swirls will actually look better.
This is because the lacing on the arm wraps around the fabric, so embroidery would be susceptible to being pulled out when tightening the laces.
Ah well..another lesson learned !

Are u still embroidering the upper sleeve? I decided to do the cloak without sleeves because I want to embroider the tunic sleeves. And I'm going to use textile paint on the leather parts.

Been working on the embroidery for the last couple of days, so here are some progress pictures(sorry for the flash of my camera). Tell me what you guys think regarding the embroidery please.
Next things on my to-do-list are lining and finishing the tunic and also working on the cloak.

Thanks !! It's not really perfect, but i tried my best.
please upload some progress pictures or finished ones also. Curious how others interpretated the embroidery.

haven't really been that productive lately, so i changed plans and decided to work on the arm parts for the costume. I painted the swirls on it to give it a nice touch.

Hi Folks,

I can't believe I've missed this thread for so long.

Has anyone around here done a good Voldemort?

I've been working on one for the last couple of years (I'm hoping he'll be "good" or I may very well cry!).

Like Fran (hi! [waves]) I'm with the UK Garrison/ 501st, and so I'm trying to make him as movie accurate as possible. The robes are all done, and I'm doing a full head prosthetic along with teeth, contacts, nails, etc.

If you want to check out some of how the build has evolved so far, check out my post over on the Cosforums (MuggleNet) site:
Creating movie accurate costumes - Chamber of Secrets

(... but if you want to cut to the chase, here's a pic of the finished sculpt in profile:)

The thread (and project) initially started out as with Lucius' Death Eater robes in mind but I eventually decided to do Voldemort instead thinking it would have been a cheaper and easier build..... ah well, I guess you learn by your mistakes :rolleyes

I've only scan read this thread but I saw someone mentioning the Nobel wands.

I know Voldy's is spot on as apparently the moulds which Nobel use are cast copies from the actual original moulds so they're about as close as you're going to get.

Admittedly it's a fair point about them maybe not holding up to cosplay, but I guess that depends on how much of a beating you plan on giving it ;)

Re the replica robes, if they're that colour (i.e. that heavily mottled) I'd avoid them unless you plan on re-dying them (it's hard to see what the fabric is like so I can't really comment on that at the mo). In terms of colour, they're too light (although if you look in the trailer for the latest film it looks like they're getting lighter) but they're nowhere near that mottled.

The 2 Death Eater masks in the earlier bits of this thread look awesome - nice work both! :cool

Re the Death Eater robe sleeves, if you're still working on these let me know as I have a reference pic which may be handy showing the originals (it's a Behind the Scenes pic I found when I did my research for Lucius a while back)

If anyone is working on anything and has any questions, just shout - if I can help, I will :)

kessa, that looks AMAZING. I'm so in awe of you folks who do the sculpts. Wow. Have you started on the robes at all?

I use my Nobel wand for cosplay (bad, i know!) but it just looks so darn pretty. I had no idea their casts also went into the actual prop. That's fantastic.

Awww, Thx :$
To be honest, I'm in awe of folks who do sculpts, etc too.
- I'm not an "arty" person by any means. I'm just good at copying existing stuff, but if I had to come up with it blind or from scratch I wouldn't stand a chance :lol

Since doing this it's really opened my eyes to just how much work goes into bringing this kind of stuff to the screen and I've got a whole new level of respect for the folks that do this kind of thing day in, day out.

Have you started on the robes at all?
Yep, they're all done and ready to go, although that one one but I didn't do myself. I did loads of research into the colours for the robes, different weights & types of fabric, etc, but getting together all of the reference material I could, etc, but when it came to the making part I had to get a very talented friend to help.... otherwise I'd have stitched myself to them :lol

I'm holding off posting up pics of them in their entirety just yet but there's a couple of "teaser" pics in that thready though on page 4. I think they're about as movie accurate as I'll ever be able to get them so I'm really really pleased with them.

The biggest problem was getting the right kind of shoes - I spent literally months and months researching thousands of different shoes to get something which was screen accurate.

It paid off in the long run.... but only just - at the 11th hour (just as I was about to order some shoes I thought were right) I found a new behind the scenes reference image which showed what I was about to get was wrong - more importantly, it was the first time I was able to see more clearly what they actually were..... it seems patience is a virtue after all (although I'm not sure if all that time spent on research is classed as "patience" or "obsession" :lol)

I'm just working on the last few bits this weekend (hopefully) so I'll post up some pics as soon as everything is all done

I did Rowena Ravenclaw last year at Dragon*Con (Tho I'm not sure anyone got it. Unfortunately there is only one Rowling approved pic to work with that I'm aware of.

untitled picture

I want to redo the bodice on this one. I did it originally in two piece with a chemise under the bodice and it was just way too much fabric. I think I want to lengthen the bodice somewhat and attach the sleeves to it instead this time. I was hoping to do this in time for this year's D*C, but I moved over the summer and it never happened.

Just realised that I hadn't updated this from my last comment on here, so this is just a quickie to say (mainly for the benefit of "Joker" seing he's interested in doing Voldy) that I recently (finally!) completed my Voldemort costume. He had his first outing in November.

Rather than going off topic, here's a link to the full build thread:

@Joker - where abouts are you? Are you in the UK? If you are, how are you getting on with setting up the group?

hello again, ladies and gents.

i'd like to extend my apologies for not contributing to this thread, but my plan was to post pictures of the event that was on august 2nd 2010, but we suffered a tragic loss of one of our close friends and one of the group on that very day. we're thinking of doing it on the annerversary to honer her memory, but as for now there is no project for me.

thank you to everyone for all of your help and contributions to this thread, please do keep adding info, pictures...whatever! its been great to see this thread blossom.

thanks again,
J.C :)

@Joker - really sorry to hear that :-(
@blondenation - those nails look really good - what did you use to make them / how did you go about it?

I just bough plastic womens nails from the drustore and filed them to points before painting them with lots of thin layers of acrylic paint on both sides, and then on the underside I darkened the nail 'root' with a sharpie so that the colouring would look three dimensional rather than a flat paint job. Hope that helps.
