Halloween costumes air mag conversion

So i wore these bad boys to my date tonight, with the ball and chain. It was awesome to see peoples reactions.. They all thought they were RD mags. Some dude started screaming while pointing at my shoes "fire, fire, fire, them kicks are fire" hahah.. Waiters at the restaurant stopped me and asked me if they were back to the future shoes, the kther one was like " bro those are the self lacing ones huh".. Some guy took pictures of them.. I was like woah.. I cant imagine ppls reactions once i have them fully moded, or modded v2s later one..

Then at the end of the night.. Some ratchets passing by were laughing and saying " omg really?!, how old is he??" Hahahahah.. No girls these are not Sketchers light up shoes for 5 year olds.. Hahaha

It was a fun night... 50 shades of grey was meh btw

haha yep i know right when I took my V2s to an actual Nike outlet store once the staff there thought they were the real ones. I often get people noticing them.

Did you just steam iron the toe box as well? Or did you remove the front sole and cut material out and re-glue? They look great!

If you're talking to me lol I cut the shoe open and took all the foam out to get the sock toebox look you see in the movie

For painting the outsole gray, how did you prep it for paint? Alcohol? Sanding?

And for the paint I assume you use Angelus and mix the right color? Maybe use their topcoat to seal it?

Thanks!

I'm sure angelus would work very good but I used some plain old acrylic "dove grey" and mixed my own splatter color they've held up from weeks of wearing I'm sure a clear coat on too would seal them even better but I haven't bothered to do that yet

So I started prepping to paint my soles today, and I sanded the outsole and heel cups with some 400 grip foam sanding blocks to take the sheen off and give the soles some more grip for the paint.

Something I noticed is that the HC Mags look like the outsole and heel cups are molded in white foam / urethane or whatever material they are, then they are painted with some kind of a green undercoat or primer, then the grey, then the aqua splatter. This isn't the aqua paint rubbing onto the grey and making it green, even if you sand in the grey only areas, it's still a weird olive green underneath.

You can see how green the sanded sole is in this photo in comparison to my first coat of paint.

The Mag on the left has a sanded sole, the one on the right is unsanded

By the way, to prep the soles for paint I am sanding them, used compressed air to blow away any dust or particles, wiped them with alcohol, wiped dry and used compressed air one more time to make sure everything was clean.

I then started to paint a base coat with white acrylic (Liquitex) and a touch of black, and just a drop of pthalocyanine blue to give it a slight blue tinge. The first base coat is a shade dark, but it will lighten up a bit on the next coat. I might do 3 coats.

I painted my soles in the blue grey, 3 coats.

I then decided to get off my lazy butt and masked the shoes, and did airbrush stipple / spatter. Pretty easy if you have an airbrush. Just run it at like 5 psi, and keep the pressure down on the trigger and pull back for paint, then let it snap back. You get random dots and some "tails" as well. For bigger dots, I just pulled the needle back a bit to let more paint through.

I probably should have gone more blue with the splatter but I don't mind it that much. The splatter is a shade bluer than the stock HC mags. I have a second pair to play with and make better. These will be a wear pair and will be skateable. :)

One last thing that helped smooth out the details and offered a nice finish: I used Liquitex Glazing medium. Basically a flexible acrylic topcoat to protect the paint. I mixed 70% gloss with 30% matte to get a satin finish. Really happy with the look!

Thanks. Markpoon strap is pretty much done, so logos are next. Just a DIY version. I have his rubber decals but I'm saving those for a different pair.

I did a very mild steam toe, just to get rid of the high boot toe but I don't want these too tight since they will be a wear pair.

The sock toe mod was the best thing I've done the shoe feels so much better and looks like a billion times better side note new mods I've done to my shoes is shaped the heel cups to the rounded fatter looking cups like the movie shoe I also dd a new splatter pattern that's more like the movie shoe where it's more consentrated splatters rather then the trailing splatter were all used to seeing on the replicas

What techniques did you use to accomplish the toe slim? Looks beautiful.
