Half Life 2 Gravity Gun build (tons o' pics!)

UN-BE-LIEV-AB-LE!!!!

Do you laser-cut the parts yourself or do you have a shop nearby that does it for you?!
I´m officially envious and in awe ;)

I can't believe there's only my response and the one above it to this update. Are the rest of you sitting at your computers drooling still? That's why it's taken me so long to reply.

When the project is finished and I've got all the kinks worked out, sure!

I'll be anxiously awaiting that... the updates are pretty amazing, seriously blown away, great work!

In a word: Yes.

My keyboard shorted out from all of the saliva. Any idea how to dry out an entire laptop?

I am also following this on Facebook as well. ;)

Thanks for the encouragement guys!

Work has slowed a bit in the past couple of days. Rain and cold temps (end of November - who saw that coming?) forced me to paint in my small spray booth for the past few days. I can only get 2-3 parts in there at a time - and since this project has somewhere around 60 components that all need paint, it was a slow process.

Here's the bits drying right now. Everything needs at least another 12 hours to cure before I can start weathering it.

What I have been able to make headway on is the gauge. In the renders, the part is held on with duct tape. Problem is, real duct tape will deform and age poorly, leaving behind a gross residue as it shrinks. I decided to make some faux tape by creating a shape out of masking tape, waxing it, then applying strips of cloth soaked in resin on top of the form. After it dried, I just popped it off and sanded off the flashing, then BAM - fake tape!

The gauge itself just needed a few more details. The needle is a flattened staple that's been filed to a point, then brazed onto an earring post.

I got the gauge prints in the mail today, and was able to finish this part up a few hours ago. Screws were pirated from a dead walkman - I know they're supposed to be flat head screws, but deadlines are tight and I've gotta keep moving...

Beyond that, I've got the weathering coat on the Xen crystals. They just need some flat clearcoat and they're ready to go!

Weathering should start tomorrow, and I'm hoping to start assembly by Thursday.

haha..this is just ridiculously cool. You put so much attention into the small details. I had to lol at the staple.. above and beyond man:)

Those crystals do look pretty awesome.

BTW, not sure if it matters or not but your address is showing on that box. Might want to mark it out.

Those crystals do look incredible!

And the 'replica' duct tape is quite clever and shows an unusual dedication to making this the best and most durable it could possibly be. I would have immediately slapped the tape on there and never given it a single thought.

Incredible work. I played HL and HL2 all expansions and that has got to be the coolest prop I have ever seen come out of those games. Well done so far. I will follow this closely to see your final outcome.

Whoops! Meant to get rid of that before I uploaded it. Thanks for the heads up.

I've spent all day, and will be spending all day tomorrow, slinging acrylic. Working on the weathering for this thing is so tedious... All the components are a different shade of gray/silver, so I can't use the same mix for more than a few parts before having to come up with a new batch. At ~60 parts that need weathering, this is taking a while.

So far the main body, rear handle and drum assemblies and most of the claw parts are good on their first pass. I'll need to seal them with matte clearcoat before finishing them up with some more dark washes and rub-n-buff silver accents. Most of the parts look like the main body, but with a lighter basecoat of silver:

Depending on the light, the rust comes and goes in intensity. In dimmer lighting, its not nearly as vibrant.

A couple more parts:

Again, needs a bit more work, but on the right track so far. I think I've got about 2/3 of the parts finished with their first weathering pass. Hopefully I Can wrap that up tomorrow and start getting everything clearcoated.

Am very sad. I started putting together a HEV suit. And I have to make a Grav Gun... WHY YOU MAKE LOOK BAD VOLPIN :(

hahaha. Also, very sorry but I will have to try and use your pics as reference for detail - But as if mine will come out anywhere near as good as yours ><. but If you rather I didnt, Ill stick to the ingame model xD This will only be for a convention as im not reproducing my HL2 stuff.

I'm absolutely amazed at this build. One quick question. When you make your molds and casts, do you use any vacuum or pressure casting, or is this all done under ambient air pressure?
