HAL 9000 from 2001: a space odyssey

No, SAL was HAL's sister unit on Earth that Dr. Chandra 'fiddles' with. The stuff on the recreated Discovery should all be HALs.

They appear to have taken some liberties, anyway (light-up nameplates).

Can't believe they used CRTs for the displays... looks tacky and low-tech compared to the original Discovery (flat, rear-projection film screens).

What are you doing, Dave? Dave. Dave. Dave, I think you should sit down, take a stress pill, and think things over calmly. Dave?

Very cool thread- Has anyone done a built up Hal with the monitor?- I had toyed around with making a Hal terminal as a jukebox for the gameroom and wrote a number of subroutines to run as background (split the screen into 4 in hopes of actually mimicking the 4 screen terminal)- Decided a WinAmp skin plus the amazing screen saver already out there would do just fine- With regard to his other parts, what were the memory cards/bars made of (found object or cast lucite- Suspect the latter)?

PhasePistol, is the memory circuit label yours? If so, was that made here? Very cool and I need one-

The HAL and SAL panels seen in "2010" are identical, except of course for the nameplate and the fact that SAL has a blue light.

note lack of speaker holes in "2010" HAL panel
2010-HALpanelbridgenearend.jpg

Discovery sets in "2010" were made by examining frame blowups from the original film. So the set designers had no "inside" information, or blueprints, or anything to work from. Our own analysis so far has been more fruitful. :lol

For this reason I don't consider anything seen in "2010" to be relevant to the original props seen in "2001". No information can be gleaned from them.

Regards that "HAL LOGIC CENTER" sign, that's a frame from the scene in "2001" where Bowman is opening the door to HAL's Brain Room to disconnect him.

BTW HAL in "2010" is definitely much larger than the HAL panel seen in "2001".

Incidentally note on that top-down shot of the pod bay HAL console, you can see markings on the black ring of the HAL lens, which protrudes beyond the metal bezel of the HAL panel.

Also note the astronauts' watches. :D

Thanks sir- Maybe able to generate that as a clear overlay onto a metal plaque- Any idea on the actual memory cards (the clear plastic)?

Here 'ya go... It's a good start, don't have the small text 'tho.

Good job on the sign, Surfer Geek. :thumbsup

The Logic Memory Center sign is on the square hatch that Bowman has to open to access the Brain Room.

2001-brainroom-entry.jpg

I don't have a better grab of the small type, but you can almost start to make it out... who has a 70mm film clip... :D

If it matters, in Arthur C Clarke's novel (which diverges from the movie on MANY points), the door to Hal's brain room says, among other things, "No Admittance Except to Authorized Personnel," "Have You Obtained Certificate H-19?" and "Ultra-Clean Area - Suction Suits Must Be Worn".

As to the lucite blocks or whatever they are, they appear to be custom made, I can't imagine that they are "found" objects. They seem to play in to that 60s aesthetic that imagined that super-advanced electronics would be in the form of crystals or clear blocks (ie Star Trek, Space 1999).

2001-halbrainroom.jpg

The "solid-state logic units" are in several banks, marked IV-1 LOGIC TERMINAL, IV-2 LOGIC TERMINAL, IV-3 LOGIC TERMINAL, and MEMORY TERMINAL.

2001-logicmodules.jpg

The circuit blocks themselves are labeled with a number and the abbreviation for the bank they're in. The third block in the IV-2 bank would be labeled "3" and "LT/2" for example.

2001-logicmodules-CU.jpg

Bowman twists a key under each block he's disconnecting, and the block slides smoothly out.

2001-logicmodulesbank.jpg

The entire room appears to be lined with similar logic block slots. Presumably Bowman is only disconnecting HAL's "higher brain functions", and the other blocks contain programming for running the automatic functions of Discovery.

SurferGeek, my computer froze for about 5 minutes solid upon loading this page of the thread because of the giant image you posted earlier. I'd imagine that it might cause other people some loading problems, as well...You think you could hotlink it instead? It would be greatly appreciated. :)

Aw man, I needed 2 more Kenko fish eyes for my robot prop.
I'm making a custom R3 astromech droid with 180 fish eye lenses and pinhole video cameras behind them, instead of the run of the mill static holoprojectors.

A month ago I was getting kenko lenses for $25 $30 a piece. this whole week I've seen em go for $75 a piece on e-bay.

just goes to show ya how quickly a small intrest can send prices into a spiral.

Yea - if all you Astromech geeks gave it a rest, there'd be enough Kenkos to build 2 or 3 HALs... ;)

Dontchoo blame it on the server. (he's watching)

Server, I'm sory about Gabe's comment... :confused

I'm calling up a camera lens... manufacturer or retailer. A friend told me to check them out for alternatives to the old Kenko.

:p In terms of my computer, you're most certainly right. It's a death curse if I've ever seen one.

Heck, I'm even having a hard time replying to this thread...It took about two minutes to get from page 6 to the "Reply to Post" page. heh. I have an old computer (almost 10 years) and it has a very low quantity of RAM...Although that image is indeed a small file size, it still takes a year to load for me because it's so humongous.

That said, he doesn't have to remove it at all. It was just a request.

Phase pistol- THANK YOU FOR THOSE PICS- I don't know when I'll get around to it but I thought a cabinet form of HAL (like a mobile work station) would make a fantastic jukebox for the gameroom-

Thanks man-

Doc

I changed the image to a link instead but it's not a factor of your or my or the storage server. It is a factor of your CPU and/or your video card being too slow or not enough RAM. Even though .gif files are small doesn't mean they won't display large and consume large amounts of video RAM and CPU cycles.

Sorry... :angel

Uh, I'm pretty much the only guy using kenkos. It's a custom design B)
but if anyone wants to match an e-bay price... I might abandon that Idea and have to sell off my 2 kenkos :angel
