HAL 9000 from 2001: a space odyssey

So, is anybody going to post some dimentions so we can all start building? I want one and I keep checking back and no one has posted yet.

Blimey.

I thought that I might get a couple of replies saying 'nice model' etc.

I've created a HAL 9000 page on my site where I'll post some more pics when I get them. I've also put my plans (such as they are) on there for your reference.

Quite a few people seem either keen to buy one or to make one themselves. I might put one on eBay (I won't advertise it here as I gather it's against the rules and quite right too) as I intend to keep one for myself.

I'll add a more detailed description of how I built him in the next few days to help all you HAL builders out there.

Cheers for now and thanks for all your very kind comments - I really do appreciate them.

Simon.

Simon:

Thanks for posting your page. Very cool.

I did a quick comparison of your drawing vs Dennis Gilliam's copy of the screenused panel (as well as a couple shots of the screenused panel):

As you can see, the actual prop is a little wider and squattier. Yours does match the typeface of the HAL 9000 logo very well.

Cheers,

- Karl

Playskool: Nice replica. :D

Would you be willing to share the dimensions of your Kenko lens?

those look like round holes to me karl :)

i mentioned in the previous thread that pcb project boards looked almost identical in hole size and spacing.

just found this on the RS site, this is the stuff i'm talking about, you can get it with different spacing and hole sizes i think?

Yeah after I saw the holes in that shot, I figured you would chime in, Zorg. :lol

Well all right, I must concede that one. BUT you can't deny that the screengrab I posted earlier shows a rectilinear grid there. Perhaps a piece that fell off, or else there were more than one style of panel (ie a "background") panel just painted black with the holes but no grid).

Or maybe that's some kind of optical illusion... :confused

Granted also that some panels seem to have black speaker areas, while others are tan.

Hmm.... well maybe you're right about those holes. :lol

And the color thing might just be a lighting/reflection issue... I see that in the two shots I posted of the screenused, it looks different too. :angel

Well you know I like how Playskool did it.

I didn't count holes (yet), but scale wise it looks quite correct. :thumbsup

Also the bare-aluminum look may be best. :D

Well it is a bit of a feeding frenzy here on the RPF. :lol

Should we start a new, "HAL panel research" thread? :D

Here's a site I found with some info on the original, and making a replica.

Nice replica, Simon.

Here's one I did a while back with a Kenko Fish-Eye.  I scratch-built it with parts I had already, so some of the dimensions are off.  But it does give you an idea of what the panel looks like using a Kenko.

VERY sweet. Is that perfboard for the grill section? What did you use for the metal sides? Also, what type of Kenko fisheye is that (size)?

:thumbsup :thumbsup

Here she is again, this time matched up to the screenused panel.

exellent karl, thanks for doing this :thumbsup

right there are 2 very different "speaker" sizes

one is 12 holes high-- the one karl has supplied the measurements to and the other size is 18 holes high from the screen grabs karl also supplied

if we make these then we better decide which version. i personally prefer the proportions of the taller speaker ones :unsure

whada you think?
